Invitation to “Line Quest” Line Following Robot Competition

I am writing on behalf of the Association of Computer Engineering Students (ACES) of

the University of Peradeniya to introduce you to our upcoming initiative, the "Line
Quest" Line Following Robot Competition organized by ACES in collaboration with
Project Nenathambara.

The competition aims to introduce school children to the basics of electronics and
programming through hands-on activities using Arduino microcontrollers. This
competition would be to fabricate a Line-Following Robot. We believe that this early
exposure will spark interest and foster a deeper understanding of these critical fields
among the children.

The competition will be done in three stages. The final stage of the competition which
is scheduled for August 2024, will be held in the Faculty of Engineering, University of
Peradeniya for qualifying 30 teams. The qualifying teams will be provided with
Arduino Project Kits necessary for the competition. Please read Annexure 3 for more
information about the nature of the competition.

Schools are kindly requested to confirm their participation before the 10th of June,
2024 11.59 pm by filling out the Participation Confirmation Form, [LINK]. (can also be
accessed by the QR code in Annexure 4) Details about the competition have been
attached to this letter. (Annexure 2 and 3)

Please contact Rusiru Induwara on 0783006101 or Rashmi Gunthilake on 0716928570

for more details.
We look forward to your participation in this competition.

Sincerely,

President ACES

ABOUT ACES

ACES, the official student body of computer engineering undergraduates at the

Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya, is dedicated to maximizing students'
potential through various activities. Established in 2001, ACES has become one of the
most active student bodies in the university, fostering innovation and empowering
students for the technological challenges ahead.

With time, ACES has become one of the most active student bodies in the University.
Various events are organised throughout the year by ACES with the perpetual
support and encouragement of the highly qualified academic staff members of the
departments in order to bring forth the innovative ideas of the undergraduates and
empower them. ACES Hackathon, ACES Coders, Computer Engineering Seminars,
‘Spark’ (school program), ‘Nenathambara’ (school program) and ACES AI Hackfest
are some of the annually organised events by ACES.

Throughout the years, ACES has actively contributed in building a platform to

improve the skills of the computer engineering students with the collaboration of the
industry and the department’s proud alumni. The successful results of the past
years’ efforts of ACES are brought out clearly through the excellent performance of
the students who have exhibited outstanding talents in multiple disciplines related to
the computer engineering domain both on national and international levels.

ABOUT PROJECT NENATHAMBARA

We are a growing community of dedicated members, including but not limited to IT

and related industry professionals, teachers, academics and undergraduates. We
have members from every background, gender and religion coming from different
parts of Sri Lanka who are scattered throughout the world.

One of our main activities is to create online courses for students in Sinhala and
Tamil, to learn programming, electronics and using microcontrollers, developing
both conceptual knowledge as well as practical skills which they can use to solve
simple problems and as a stepping stone for more sophisticated studies.

We also train teachers, conducting webinars and seminars, helping them to learn
and master these skills. We also provide them with support to deliver our curricula to
their students in classroom settings.

Annexure 2 INTRODUCTION
LINE FOLLOWING ROBOT USING ARDUINO

Arduino is an open-source electronics platform based on easy-to-use hardware

and software. It consists of a microcontroller that can be programmed to sense and
control objects in the physical world. Arduino boards are popular among hobbyists,
students, and professionals for creating interactive projects due to their versatility
and affordability.

One fascinating application of Arduino is in building line-following robots. These

robots are autonomous machines designed to follow a predefined path, typically a
line on the ground. They use sensors, such as infrared or color sensors, to detect the
line and adjust their movement to stay on track. The control system of the robot
processes the sensor data and sends commands to the motors to steer the robot
along the line.

Participating in a line-following robot competition using Arduino offers several

benefits:
1. Education: Competitions teach practical skills in robotics, electronics, and
programming.
2. Problem Solving: Designing line-following robots involves solving complex
challenges.
3. Teamwork: Competing in teams fosters collaboration and leadership.
4. Creativity: Designing robot components allows for experimentation.
5. Competition: Motivating and rewarding, it encourages excellence!

Overall, participating in a line-following robot competition using Arduino can be a

rewarding experience that combines learning, innovation, and fun. It provides a
platform for individuals to showcase their skills, creativity, and problem-solving
abilities in a competitive yet collaborative environment.

Your school is invited to participate in the “Line Quest” 2024 - Line Following Robot
Competition. Here, students can explore their creativity and delve into the world of
technology. We eagerly anticipate igniting a passion for innovation among your
aspiring students!

Team Organization:

Each team should have a maximum of 5 members.

All team members should be current students from Grade 6 to Grade 13.
A team can comprise a mixture of members of different grades / ages.
Each team should be accompanied by a teacher in charge of the school.
A name for the team should be created by the team itself.

The Competition consists of 3 Stages:

Stage 1 : Elimination Round using Tinkercad [www.tinkercad.com]
Stage 2 : Video Demo Round - Assessing a simple task consisting of a 90 degree bend
using the provided robot kit and submitting a video demonstration. This is not an
elimination round.
