I wanted to thank you for the opportunity to be interviewed for the VMA
position at Premier Medical, im very excited about it
I am a medical doctor from Ecuador, where I completed my studies at the
University of Guayaquil, graduating in 2020. I hold diplomas in
ultrasonography and Doppler, as well as in chronic illness care.
I made my internship year at Martin Icaza General Hospital in Babahoyo, I
gained hands-on experience in various medical departments, including
internal medicine, pediatrics, and emergency care. I was responsible for
conducting patient assessments, developing treatment plans, and
collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to ensure comprehensive patient
care.
In my social service year in the rural area of Ventanas, I focused on primary
care in underserved communities. My duties included providing preventive
care, managing chronic conditions, and educating patients on health
maintenance. This experience allowed me to develop strong skills in patient
communication and resource management in a resource-limited setting.
Currently, I work as an Outpatient General Practitioner at Santa Rosa
Medical Center, where I manage a diverse patient population affiliated with
the Ecuadorian National Health Insurance. My role involves performing
routine check-ups, diagnosing and treating acute and chronic illnesses, and
coordinating care with specialists as needed. I also emphasize patient
education and preventive care to improve overall health outcomes.
If successful in this interview, I am eager to bring my skills and experience
to PMA and collaborate with your team to provide exceptional care to your
patients. I am excited about the opportunity to contribute to your mission
and grow professionally within your organization."
Why do you want to work here?
referred to this position by a colleague who speaks highly about PMA and
its work culture. With my background as a Physician I think I have the
qualification and the knowledge that fits the role, then after researching
more about pma i was particularly impressed by its commitment to
diversity and inclusion I’m also really drawn to the fact that this is a remote
position, as it allows me to contribute effectively while maintaining a good
work-life balance. Finally being a job in line with my medical education and
my plans for the future I see the opportunity to grow and learn from such a
talented and experienced team, that is why I decided to apply to the
position
What are your strengths?
 I am a quick learner and an early adopter I manage to learn things
quick especially things related with technology and systems.
 Time management I am always looking for ways to optimize my
workflow and streamline the processes, in my social service year we
faced the covid pandemic and then the covid vaccination, in that
period we were short-staffed and we were working on tight deadlines
with clerical and operative work but I managed to organize the team
we achieve the vaccination goals and deliver everything on time.
 I have strong communication skills.

What is your biggest weakness?

It may sound like a strength disguised as a weakness, but my biggest
weakness is that I often find it really difficult to say no and tend to take on
too many tasks at once. This can occasionally lead to feeling overwhelmed.
For example, during my social service year, when I was involved in the
COVID-19 vaccination campaign, the health district often asked me to
participate in additional programs and activities. Some of these were
optional, but I found it hard to say no, so I would try to fit them into my
schedule. While I managed to meet the expectations, that overcommitment
took a toll in my health it led to burnout and stress-induced gastritis. Since
then, I’ve been improving by learning to prioritize tasks more effectively and
being upfront about my workload to ensure I can complete tasks efficiently
without overcommitting.

Why should we hire you

I believe I am a strong fit for this role because of my medical

background as a General Practitioner, combined with my experience
in handling a high volume of patients, in my current job I get 24
patients appointed for every shift, the shifts are 6 hours long so its 4
patients per hour so im accustomed to handling a high volume of
work, Im also familiarize with the healthcare system and ive worked
extensively with electronic medical records, i have strong
organizational skills, which I think are essential for a virtual assistant
role. Additionally, I have a calm and professional demeanor when
interacting with patients, which will help ensure smooth
communication with the patient.
Describe a challenge you’ve faced at work and how you dealt
with it.
During my social service year, I was assigned to be the director of the
health center in wich i was working on because the former director
needed some time off because of health reasons, most of our efforts
were aimed to the COVID-19 vaccination campaign and we were
short-staffed. Around that time, the health district asked our center to
participate in a community health fair while also organizing the
painting of a mural aimed at raising awareness about teenage
pregnancy. This was a challenging request because it wasn’t part of
my initial responsibilities, and I was already managing a busy
vaccination schedule added to our other regular activities.
To tackle this, I prioritized effective teamwork. I collaborated with my
colleagues to ensure the vaccination process ran smoothly while
allocating time for the additional tasks. I delegated responsibilities,
with some team members handling the mural planning and outreach
while I focused on logistics for the health fair we even needed to work
overtime for a couple of days but we worked together efficiently,
staying in constant communication to ensure everything was done on
time. In the end, both the fair and the mural were successful.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
It’s hard to tell, cause life doesn’t always go the way we think it will
go, but I would like to grow in PMA, so in the next two to three years, I
can see myself becoming an expert in my role as a virtual medical
assistant, absorbing as much knowledge as I can to optimize and
streamline processes that make the workflow easier for doctors I will
assists and improve the care for the patients. The next 2 to 3 years
after that, I look forward to continuing to develop my skills and prove
myself as a valuable member of the organization, ready to take on
bigger projects and additional responsibilities and maybe one day i
could be working in PMA as a provider.
Why are you thinking about leaving your current job?
Managed Care Overview
Managed care is a healthcare delivery system aimed at controlling
costs, improving quality, and ensuring efficient use of services. It
focuses on coordinating care through a network of healthcare
providers to streamline patient treatment and reduce unnecessary
healthcare expenses.
Key Concepts in Managed Care:
 Cost Control: Managed care organizations (MCOs) negotiate
contracts with healthcare providers to offer services at reduced
rates, often using capitation (a fixed amount per patient) or
discounted fee-for-service models.
 Network of Providers: Patients are encouraged or required to
use healthcare providers within a pre-approved network to
receive covered services.
 Preventive Care: Emphasizes preventive care and early
intervention to avoid costly treatments down the line.
 Care Coordination: Primary care providers (PCPs) often act as
gatekeepers, coordinating patient care and referring to
specialists when necessary.
 Utilization Management: Utilization review ensures that the
necessary and appropriate services are provided, minimizing
overuse of healthcare resources.
Types of Managed Care Plans:
 Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs): Require
members to use a network of providers and typically require a
referral to see specialists.
 Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs): Offer more
flexibility in choosing providers, with higher costs for out-of-
network services.
 Point of Service (POS) Plans: Combine features of HMOs and
PPOs, requiring a PCP for referrals but allowing some out-of-
network care at a higher cost.

Hiipa Overview
HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) is a U.S.
law enacted in 1996 to protect sensitive patient health information. It
ensures that medical data is kept confidential and secure by setting
standards for the privacy of personal health information (PHI). HIPAA
applies to healthcare providers, insurers, and other entities that
handle patient data, requiring them to implement safeguards to
prevent unauthorized access, sharing, or breaches. It also gives
patients rights over their health information, including the ability to
access and request corrections to their records.

HEDIS
HEDIS (Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set) is a set of
standardized performance measures used by health plans to assess
the quality of care and services they provide to their members.
Developed by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA),
HEDIS enables comparisons between health plans and ensures
accountability in healthcare.
HEDIS measures cover a range of healthcare areas, including:
1. Effectiveness of Care – Measures how well a health plan
provides preventive care (e.g., cancer screenings,
immunizations).
2. Access to Care – Evaluates how easily members can obtain
needed services.
3. Utilization – Tracks how often members use healthcare
services (e.g., hospital admissions, emergency room visits).
4. Experience of Care – Measures member satisfaction with the
health plan and services received.
5. Health Plan Descriptive Information – Provides information
on the structure and operations of the health plan.
HEDIS is used by over 90% of U.S. health plans to measure
performance and improve care quality.
