II. Background Information for Learners

This module will help you understand that arts has mirrored life in the community, society and the world in
all its colors, lines, shapes and forms. It was shown and evident in the 20th century which saw a boom in the
interchange of ideas, beliefs, values and lifestyle that continues to bring people in different country closer together.
Different art movements captured and expressed all these and more during the late 19 th century to the 20th century.
Such art movements are impressionism, expressionism and modern art on the 21 st century. So come and have fun
exploring these art forms we have.

EXPRESSIONISM ARTS

II. Background Information for Learners


This lesson will help you understand the art movements that captured and expressed the ideas,
beliefs, values and lifestyle that continues to bring people in different country closer together.
Expressionism was a movement in which objective reality was displaced by subjective emotions,
with the consequence that a long-lasting climate of self-expression spread. It Works with more
emotional force, rather than realistic or natural images.
Various style of expressionism art movement are the following:
 Neo-primitivism - It is an art style that incorporated elements from the native arts of the South
Sea Islanders and the wood carvings of African tribes. Among the Western artists who
adapted these elements was Amedeo Modigliani, who used the oval faces and elongated
shapes of African art in both his sculptures and paintings.
 Fauvism - It was a style that used bold, vibrant colors and visual distortions. Its name was
derived from les fauves (“wild beasts”), referring to the group of French expressionist
painters who painted in this style. The most known fauvist was Henri Matisse.
 Dadaism - It was a style characterized by dream fantasies, memory Images, and visual tricks
and surprises—as in the paintings of Marc Chagall (I and the Village, 1911) and Giorgio de
Chirico (Melancholy and Mystery of a Street, 1914). They chose the child’s term for
hobbyhorse, dada, to refer to their new “non-style.”
 Surrealism - It was a style that depicted an illogical, subconscious dream world beyond the
logical, conscious, physical one. Its name came from the term “super realism”. Many
surrealists’ works depicted morbid or gloomy subjects, as in those by Salvador Dali
(Persistence of Memory, 1931). Others were quite playful and even humorous, such as those
by Paul Klee (Diana, 1932) and Joan Miro (Personages of Star, 1933).
 Social Realism - It expressed the artist’s role in social reform. It used their works to protest
against the injustices, inequalities, immorality, and ugliness of the human condition and
addressed different issues. Some of the known social realists were Ben Shahn (Miner’s
Wives, 1948) and Pablo Picasso (Guernica, 1937)
