I am greatly happy to state that NITK has proudly celebrated the Diamond Jubilee during the academic
year 2019–20, and this occasion of convocation also marks the closure of our Diamond jubilee.
Diamond Jubilee Celebrations
• The institute has honoured all stake holders for their contributions to the growth and development
through felicitations throughout the Diamond Jubilee year 2019-20.
• 2100 saplings of 60 varieties were planted in the campus by students, faculty and campus residents to
enhance the green cover.
• 44 events including National, International Conferences and Workshops were conducted as part of
diamond jubilee celebrations.
• Hackverse, a 24-hour national level hackathon was organised on 25th and 26th of January 2020. This
mega event received around 2500 registrations from students of IITs, NITs, making it one of the largest,
student organised hackathons in India.
The highlights of the celebrations were the Diamond Jubilee-Year Convocation and the inauguration of the
Central Research Facility (CRF).
• Hon’ble Vice President of India, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu graced the occasion of the 17th Convocation
as Chief Guest on 2nd of November 2019. His inspiring speech won the hearts of the young graduates

Academic Activities
At present, NITK offers B.Tech programs in 9 disciplines, M. Tech and M.Tech (by Research) programs in 27
specializations, M.Sc programs in Physics and Chemistry, MBA, MCA and Doctoral programmes. I am very
pleased to state that 763 Undergraduate, 659 postgraduate and 121 research scholars will receive their
degrees in this convocation.
• The new curriculum, implemented in 2018-19 with participation of experts from academia and industry
is a visionary and farsighted document. It enables students to intern for as much as a semester in
Industry if they desire. Additional flexibility by way of facilitating the students to acquire a `Minor’ or a
`Honours Degree’ has been provided. It is designed with the vision of empowering students to become
self-learners. An exhaustive academic audit has been carried out in all departments with academia and
industry experts assessing the performance of all programs. The feedback provided by this committee
has been shared with the departments and corrective action to address the lacunae has been initiated.
• An MIS platform called Integrated Resources and Information Sharing System (IRIS) has been developed
jointly by faculty members and students of the institute. A robust and a unique online lecture delivery
platform has been installed by making use of this platform. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the IRIS
platform integrated with Moodle was utilised to handle all academic activities. The use of Big-Blue-
Button and Microsoft Teams has enabled the teaching-learning-and assessment processes to be carried
out in virtual-flipped mode. This arrangement has been used to cater to more than 6,000 students
located in India and abroad. Faculty members and students are also regularly using the online courses
available on NPTEL/Swayam / MOOC platforms approved by MoE as supplementary learning material.
• In the current semester, the entire theory and laboratory courses are handled in virtual-flipped mode.
Regular exhaustive surveys are regularly carried out to confirm the efficacy of the teaching-learning
process.
Faculty
NITK has committed faculty who are contributing to teaching, research, administration, societal
commitments and outreach activities. During the year 2020, our faculty have contributed as many as
1451 publications to Journals and Conferences indexed in Scopus and Web of Science (WoS). We expect
this number to increase further before the close of the year. I am also very happy to inform you that four
faculty members from NITK have found a place in the top 2% of researchers in the world as per a survey
carried out by a team of scientists from Stanford University. Faculty members from NITK have filed 13
Indian Patent applications in the year 2020. Further, I am proud to state that 5 patents have been awarded
to our faculty members in 2020. We are happy to state that our faculty have been granted four patents in
2020. 20 MoUs were signed/ renewed during the period 2019-20 with leading national and international
agencies and universities to promote research collaboration and for exchange of students/faculty.
Faculty members are striving hard to acquire funded research projects. A total of 171 funded research
projects were operational in NITK during 2019-10. A sum of Rs. 83.84 crore has been granted to NITK as
research funding during this period. Our Testing and Consultancy (T&C) receipts rose from Rs. 1.58 crore

Research publications in quality journals play an important role in determining the research status of an
institution. I am very happy to state that our faculty members have been able to publish 963 papers in
Scopus indexed publications and 488 papers on WoS indexed publications in 2020. I expect this figure to
improve significantly before the close of this year. The number of citations of articles published by faculty
members from NITK is growing at a healthy rate and we have taken significant steps to support faculty
members in their endeavour to publish in highly rated journals. This should further improve the research
visibility of the institute in the years to come.
Infrastructural Facilities
Consequent to the growing number of students entering the Institute as per the policies of the government,
the infrastructural facilities in the Institute are being regularly added and upgraded.
Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’, Hon’ble Minister for Education, inaugurated the new faculty apartments,
`Shruti’ and `Laya’ during his visit to NITK on the 25th of February, 2020. He also laid the foundation stones

Presidential Address
Respected chief guest Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’, Honorable Union Minister of Education, Govt. of
India; Guest of Honour Shri Sanjay Dhotre, Honorable Union Minister of State for Education, Govt. of India;
Guest of Honour Dr. G. Satheesh Reddy, Secretary, Department of Defense R&D and Chairman, DRDO; Shri.
Amit Khare, Higher education secretary; Officers of MoE, Members of the Board of Governors, Director,
Dy. Director, Members of the Senate, Deans, Heads of Departments, Registrars, Faculty Members, Staff,
Students, Officers, Esteemed Guests, Distinguished Invitees, Parents, representatives of Press and Media,
ladies and gentlemen and my dear young and proud graduates,
I am delighted to be with you at the graduate and awards ceremony and closing ceremony of Diamond
Jubilee Celebrations of our great Institution. Let me start by congratulating the graduates. Indeed, it is your
hardwork, devotion to quality, dedication of your teachers and staff and vision of your management which
is responsible for this momentous occasion.
When one looks back on life, there are a few days which are always fresh and ever memorable and one
such day is the Graduation Day where in one underwent transformation from being a student to a well-
rounded graduate professional. It is also a special day in the academic calendar of an institution as the
Institution is fulfilling its social responsibility by sending out young men and women empowered with the
power of knowledge to serve the society. Please remember that this is also a day that you should look back
with gratefulness to parents, teachers and also your alma mater. You are probably aware that ‘Parents are
your first teachers and teachers are your second Parents’.
My Dear Young Graduates,
You are ready to step into an exciting world with new hopes and aspirations; your degree is a formal
recognition that you are ready to move forward towards acquiring more knowledge in the area of your
choice. I have no doubt that with the high quality and standard education received at NITK, you are ready
to take on your role in your desired profession and serve the society as a better human being. Enjoy your
daily work and aim to accomplish great things. Love the job that you do, work hard and have passion for
your work – there is no short cut to success.
The world is challenging, and you will face many challenges. Each one of you, depending on your goals and
ambitions, have to make your own analysis or plan in building your career as well as in the materialization
of your dreams. Continue to have desires and hopes as this will help you move forward and achieve your
goals. To achieve your ambitions, the salient attributes you must observe are: Punctuality, Self-discipline,
13
Eighteenth Annual Convocation
Maintaining cordial relations with Management and Community; Positive Attitude, Simple living and
High thinking. One must develop qualities such as Leadership, Time Management, Commitment, Crisis
Management, Communication Skills, Modesty, Loyalty, Social Etiquette, Intelligence, Presence of Mind,
Sense of Humour, Sense of Justice and last but not the least, Character and Conduct of a high order and a
deep sense of appreciation and attitude to follow and respect professional ethics and moral values.
Life is never a bed of roses. All of us need to consider any set back in our life as a learning experience
and convert the disadvantage into advantage. (In terms of SWOC analysis – Convert Challenges into
Opportunities and Weakness into Strength.) This helps our life in moving forward.
One of the hurdles which often work as a speed breaker is our mental block – to think of higher targets and
goals to be impossible. Our beloved former President, Dr. A.P.J. Kalam says, “All technological advantages
we have today are the outcome of scientific exploration of scientists of earlier centuries. At no time, man
was beaten by problems. He strives continuously to subjugate impossibility and then succeeds”. Therefore,
if challenges are to be achieved, it is the power of youth, which must rise to the challenge, and we have full
confidence, all of you will strive hard not only to achieve your goals but also make this county a developed
nation and a better living place.
Have you heard this statement – “If you want to walk fast, walk alone; if you want to walk far, walk together.”
The wisdom in this saying is simple – i.e., great achievements can only be achieved by a team. So as you
progress in your life to reach the top and to stay there, individual excellence alone will NOT help and
you have to be a part of a great team. That is, you shall be a team player. I would like to stress that good
intentions, clear aim, positive attitude, being transparent and leaving out the selfish in every transactions
of life are all important to build great teams. Your ability to be a cohesive team player initially and later
your ability to build a team for yourself is what matters to be successful in life.
Today industry 4.0 is the reality that the entire world has been adopting, including India. Industry 4.0
stands for the fourth industrial revolution. This has given a big boost to ‘Make in India’ policy promoted
by the central government. While industry 3.0 focused on the automation of the single machines and
processes, the importance of industry 4.0 lies on the fact that it concentrates on the end-to-end digitization
of all physical Assets and their integration into digital ecosystems with Value Chain partners. Generating,
analyzing and communicating data seamlessly underpins the gains promised by industry 4.0, which
networks a wide range of new technologies to create value.

You will all agree with me if I say, we are all the benefactors from the work and sacrifice of a large number
of people from the society. It is the society that provided us public (common) comfort such as Road,
Electricity, Water, Sanitation etc., and it is important that we shall do our part in giving our share back.
Your knowledge, skills, expertise will not have any value if it is not beneficial to the person who needs it.
“We make a living by what we get;
We make a life by what we give.”
Make sure, if there is an opportunity, help a needy person in young professional life. That will certainly
make you happy at the end of the day. I think it is very important for your professional growth.
I sincerely believe that the youth of our country have the potential to take on these new challenges and
it is the responsibility of our teachers to guide them on this path. As the father of the nation, Mahatma
Gandhi once said, “The difference between what we do and what we are capable of doing would suffice
to solve most of the world’s problems”.
I am happy to convey that NITK Surathkal has moved up in the recent National Institutional Ranking
Framework (NIRF) from 21 to 13. This achievement has been possible due to the encouragement and
support of MoE, Government of India, sustained planning, timely BoG decisions, execution, quality of
teaching, research, outcome-based education, accreditations, high-value placements leading to this
notable ranking. All members of BoG, Director, Deputy Director, Members of Senate, Deans, HODs, Faculty,
Staff, Students and Alumni have worked so hard for this outstanding and impressive achievement. You
have the creativity and determination to do whatever you can dream. I hope we feel proud today and
confident in your ability to rise to your next challenge. I thank each one of them and hope we will do better
in the next ranking cycle. NITK with good standing in NIRF ranking will be classified, I presume and wish,
also as Category-I Research Intensive University in the near future and try to become Multi-Disciplinary
Education Research University (MERU). Congratulations and Keep It Up!
I am extremely happy during the diamond jubilee celebrations of NITK, Surathkal. Several events and
activities have been conducted. The main events include 60th Institute Foundation Day and Inauguration
of Diamond Jubilee Celebrations, Alumni meets and National and International Conferences, Workshops,
Teachers day and Academic Summit, Sports Meet, Engineers Day and Technology Summit, Technical Fest
‘Engineer 2019’, Diamond Jubilee Convocation, NITK Research Conclave, Alumni Re-unions, Global Alumni
Convention, Karavali Marathon, Bharath Darshan, Cultural fest INCIDENT 2020, etc.
The NITK Alumni association has a base of over thirty-five thousand alumni, with twenty-three chapters
functioning across the globe. The Association has been providing scholarships, financial aids and soft
loans to needy students. Alumni Association’s flagship initiative Career-development Alumni Mentorship
Programmes (Known as CAMP) guides students in developing and preparing for their career aspirations.
Before I conclude, let me tell you about the new National Education Policy – 2020 released by the Hon’ble
Prime Minister Sri Narendra Modi and the Minister for Education Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’, which
is going to open up education field creating a wide opening for youth who wish to pursue academics and
research and contribute to build world class Institutes of excellence. The vision of NEP 2020 is to build the
globally best education system and make India a global knowledge superpower. The policy will also be

building character and creating holistic and well- rounded individuals equipped with the key 21st Century
skills. The biggest change may be the introduction of four-year undergraduate degree programme, with
options for entry and exit at various stages and an academic credit transfer system. The new NEP shows a
way to empower every student and all stake holders in Higher and school education.
21st century belongs to India. India will be shaping the destiny of the world as its leader. We have all
necessary potentials, skills and competencies. As our honorable Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra
Damodardas Modi says, “I see the foundations of the 21st century resting on three crucial pillars of
innovation, teamwork and Technology. Each of these compliments each other”. Let us make India a
developed nation by promoting more job creators and innovative/spot decision leaders at all levels, taking
our great country to greater heights.
I conclude my talk by again congratulating all the successful graduates, their proud parents and
congratulations to this great institution and its faculty, staff and alumni members who have consistently
contributed to the educational standards of our country. I pray God to shower on you all with his blessings
and guidance.
Thank you, Jai Hind
