MCA MID TERM EXAMINATION, ODD SEM 2021-22 (SEM III)
Roll No.
Subject Name: Computer Networks
Time: 2 Hours Total Marks: 50
Note: All questions are compulsory. No student is allowed to leave the examination hall before the completion of the exam.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________
Q.1) Attempt all Parts:
(a) What is the difference between direct and indirect delivery?
(b) Identify the five components of a data communications system.
(c) Compare the window size, number of bits, used for numbering the frames and buffer size for the three
ARQ techniques.
(d) Design hybrid topology with a star backbone and three ring networks.
[4 x 2.5= 10]
Q.2) Attempt all Parts:
(a) Apply bit stuffing to this: 011011111111111111110010.
(b) A block of address is granted to a small organization. We know that one of the addresses is
192.168.32.56/29. Find out the first address and the last address in the block.
(c) Define the relation between period and frequency?
(d) Change the following IPV4 addresses from dotted-decimal notation to binary.
(i)129.11.11.239
(ii)193.131.27.255
[4 x 2.5= 10]
Q.3) Attempt any Two Parts:
(a) What is the remainder obtained by dividing x7+x5+1 by the generator polynomial x3+1?
(b) Explain the sliding window protocols.
(c) Explain the difference between virtual circuit and datagram network with the help of diagram.
[2 x 5= 10]

Q.4) Attempt any Two Parts:

(a) If the 7-bit Hamming codeword received by the receiver is 1011011. Assuming the even parity, state
whether the received codeword is correct or wrong. If wrong, locate the bit in error.
(b) “The physical addresses will change from hop to hop, but the logical address usually remains the same”.
Justify in your own words.
(c) Compare and contrast the Go-back-N ARQ Protocol with selective -Repeat ARQ.
[2 x 5= 10]

Q.5) Attempt any Two Parts:

(a) Explain the OSI reference model and also explain the functions of different layers.
(b) Compare and contrast flow control and error control.
(c) Assume that source S and destination D are connected through two intermediate routers labeled R.
Explain how many times each packet must visit the network layer and the data link layer during a
transmission from S to D.
