MISSION AND VISION OF THE INSTITUTE
Mission Statement
"The Institute will strive to be a centre of excellence on all population and relevant issues through
high-quality education, teaching and research. This will be achieved by (a) creating competent
professionals, (b) generating and disseminating scientific knowledge and evidence, (c)
collaboration and exchange of knowledge, and (d) advocacy and awareness.

ABOUT THE INSTITUTE
The International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS) Mumbai, formerly known as the
Demographic Training and Research Centre (DTRC) till 1970, was established in July 1956 under
the joint sponsorship of the Government of India, Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, and the United Nations.
The Institute is under the administrative control of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare,
Government of India.
The Institute serves as a regional centre for Training and Research in Population Studies for the
ESCAP region. The Institute was re-designated to its present title in 1985 to facilitate the
expansion of its academic activities and was declared as a 'Deemed University' in August 14, 1985
under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development,
Government of India. This recognition has facilitated the award of degrees by the Institute itself
and paved the way for further expansion of the Institute as an academic institution. The faculty
members and the supporting staff belong to diverse interdisciplinary background with
specialisation in some core areas of population sciences, trained in India and abroad.
The Institute is the hub of population and health related teaching and research in India, playing a
vital role for planning and development of the country. During the past years, students from
different countries of Asia and the Pacific region, Africa and North America have been trained at
the Institute. The alumni of the Institute are occupying prestigious positions at reputed national
and international organisations, universities, research institutes and non-governmental
organisations.
The Institute offers Post-Graduate, Doctoral, and Post-Doctoral courses, admission to which for
the academic session 2024-2025 is announced hereby. After completing the course, students of all
programmes are well prepared for: (i) admission to higher degree programmes in the best
universities of the world; (ii) a good career in teaching & research; (iii) multi-disciplinary
professional career; or (iv) independent consultant and specialist in health and development
sectors.

Ph.D. fellowship also carries a contingency grant of Rs.10,000/- per year for the first two years

7 Reservation for SC/ST/OBC/PWD/EWS may be considered as per the Government of India norms
only. The format of SC/ST/OBC/PWD/EWS/KASHMIRI MIGRANT CERTIFICATE is given in
Annexures. The candidates are required to submit the respective valid category certificate at the
time of admission.
8 The candidates provisionally selected under EWS and OBC-NCL category are required to submit
the valid certificate issued on or after 01 April 2024 by the competent authority. If the candidate
fails to submit the valid certificate at the time of admission his/her candidature will stand
cancelled with immediate effect and no further request will be entertained.
9 The non-refundable processing fee is Rs.1000/- for General category, Rs. 500/- for OBC (Non-
Creamy Layer) and EWS category, and Rs. 250/- for SC/ST/PWD category. Rs.1000/- for Part-
time Ph.D.
11 All selected students for Master Programmes are eligible for on campus hostel accommodation.
12 If any student desires to withdraw admission after paying the course fees, the refund of course fees
will be as per the Institute’s rule.
13 No candidate is entertained to contact any faculty/staff, related to admission and other details.
14 The classes for all courses will begin on August 12, 2024 (Master Degree Programme) & August
06,2024 (Ph.D Programme).

Course-wise Admission Announcement Academic Year 2024-25
Applications are invited for admission to M.A./M.Sc. in Population Studies for the Academic
Session 2024-2025. The classes for the course will begin on August 12, 2024.
Eligibility: Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university in India or abroad in
any subject with a minimum of 55% marks (50% for reserved candidates) of aggregate
marks/equivalent grade in all subjects will be eligible for admission.
Candidates who have already passed the qualifying degree examinations and those who have
already appeared/shall be appearing in the final qualifying examinations are eligible to apply.
However, the admission of the candidate will be cancelled, if s/he fails to furnish final result by
September 30, 2024.
The upper age limit is 25 years as on June 30, 2024. Marks and age will be relaxed for candidates
belonging to SC/ST/OBC/PWD categories as per Government of India rules only.
Fellowship: Each selected Indian student will be awarded a Government of India Fellowship @
Rs. 5,000/- per month.
Selection Criteria: The selection will be made on the basis of an Online Entrance Test across
India. The Online Entrance Test will comprise objective type questions of multiple choices. The
syllabus of Entrance Test will consist of Mathematics & Statistics, Logical Reasoning, English,
General Knowledge and Social Science. The test venue will be notified in the Admit Card.
Registration for Admission Test and Processing Fee: All eligible candidates are required to
register online by visiting the Institute’s website www.iipsindia.ac.in during March 15, 2024 to
April 30, 2024.
The non-refundable processing fee for the Online Test is Rs. 1000/- for General Category, Rs.
500/- for OBC (Non-Creamy Layer), Rs. 500/- for EWS and Rs. 250/- for SC/ST/PWD. Those

4. DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN POPULATION STUDIES (Ph.D.)
Applications are invited for admission to Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Population Studies
during the academic session 2024-25. The classes for the course will begin on August 06, 2024.
No. of Fellowships: As per availability of GOI fellowships. In addition, UGC-JRF and other
fellowship holders will be considered for admission as per availability of seats.
Candidate who have already passed the qualifying examination and those who have already
appeared/shall be appearing in the final qualifying examinations are eligible to apply. However,
admission of the candidate will be cancelled if s/he fails to furnish the final examination result by
September 30, 2024.
The upper age limit is 30 years as on June 30, 2024. Marks and age will be relaxed for candidates
belonging to SC/ST/OBC/PWD categories as per Government of India rules.
Duration: Three years’ full time to a maximum of six years. Duration is specified for thesis
submission and not for fellowship. The Pre-Ph.D. course work (eight months duration) shall be
compulsory for the candidates admitted to the Ph.D. programme.

5. PART-TIME Ph.D. PROGRAMME IN POPULATION STUDIES
Applications are invited for admission to the Part-time Ph.D. programme of the Institute for the
academic session 2024-25 . The classes for the course will begin on August 06, 2024.
Duration: three to Six years including Pre-PhD course work.
The Pre-Ph.D. course work (eight months duration) shall be compulsory for the candidates
admitted to the Ph.D. programme under part-time mode. Total duration of part-time Ph.D.
programme shall be for a minimum of three years (including coursework) and maximum of six
years.
No Age Limit.

Selection Criteria:
The admission to Ph.D. programme is through a two-stage process;
Online Entrance Test and personal interview. The Online Entrance Test will consist of objective type
questions of multiple choices. The syllabus of Online Entrance Test will consist of questions on
Research Methodology and Population Studies/Demography. The test venue will be notified in the
Admit Card. Based on the performance in the Online Test, shortlisted candidates will be called for
personal interview at IIPS. Final selection will be based on the weighted average of scores of Online
Test and interview in person. The Institute will not bear any travel expense of the candidates called
for the test/personal interview.
Registration for Admission Test and Processing Fee: All eligible candidates are required to
register online by visiting the Institute’s website www.iipsindia.ac.in during March 15, 2024 to
April 30, 2024.
Course Fees: If any student desires to withdraw admission after paying the course fees, the refund
of course fees will be as per the Institute’s rule. Candidates admitted to Part-time Ph.D.
Programme will have to pay fees as shown in the table given below for the first year and
subsequently, they have to follow Ph.D. Programme fee structure till completion of the course.

Computer Based Test (CBT) Guidelines
• Computer Based Test (CBT) for Admission (2024-25) will be held on June 30, 2024.
• Each course will have 75 questions and each question will have only 4 options.
• Total marks for each courses will be 75.
• Total duration of CBT will be 01 Hours only.
• The marking for the MCQ Questions will be of Absolute type (Only one option is correct).
• 1 mark for each correct answer and 0.25 marks are deducted for each wrong answer.
