L3- What is a Government?

Answer the following questions

Q.1) 1. What do you understand by the word 'government'? List five ways in which you think
the government affects your daily life.
Ans: A government is a group of individuals elected by the people who work for the welfare
of the people. They make the rules and regulations and also ensure that all the rules are
followed to run a country.

 They protect us from foreign attacks.


 They provide us with proper health facilities.
 They provide aid and assistance to people in times of natural disasters.
 They make important decisions of building roads and providing other facilities.
 They solve the problems or disputes occurring among people.

2. Why do you think the government needs to make rules for everyone in the form of laws?
Ans: It is necessary to make rules in the form of laws as:

 It helps the proper functioning of the government.


 It keeps a checks and balances on the crimes taking place.
 So that people can live in peace and harmony.

3. Name two essential features of a democratic government.


Ans: The two essential features of a democratic government are:

 The representatives are elected by the people and for the people.
 Right to vote and Universal Adult Franchise.

4. What was the suffrage movement? What did it accomplish?


Ans: Suffrage movement was a movement by the women and poor people who fought for
their rights to participate in the government. This movement was dominantly observed in
Europe and the USA.
This movement accomplished: The women's right to vote.

5. Gandhiji strongly believed that every adult in India should be given the right to vote.
However, a few people don't share his views. They feel that illiterate people, who are mainly
poor, should not be given the right to vote. What do you think? Do you think this would be a
form of discrimination? Give five points to support your view and share these with the class.
Ans: Yes, according to me this is kind of discrimination because:

 The independent air in which we are breathing today is a result of a mass struggle
irrespective of the literacy of the people.
 Generally, nobody likes to be illiterate by choice. People must be given equal
opportunity to be a part of the system.
 Even today if there is a foreign attack all the citizens will fight for the nation on the
same level irrespective of their literacy status. So they must be given equal
opportunity in the appointment of government too.
 If only a few literate people vote, the powers would be limited to a certain class of
people.
 There is a high chance of corruption if only a few people are allowed to
vote.

Two types of governments:
Democracy:

 People choose their government.


 They are the ones who take decisions and make laws through their elected
representatives.

Monarchy:

 The government run by a king or queen or monarch is monarchy.


 The king or queen takes decisions and makes law

Answer:
Main features of a Democracy:

 People elect their leaders.


 It is a rule by the people.
 People participate in decision-making through their representative.
