Second Semester 2023-2024
Mid-Semester Test
(EC-2 Regular)

Course No. : AE ZG516

Course Title : ADVANCES IN IC ENGINES
Nature of Exam : Closed Book
Weightage : 30% No. of Pages = 1
Duration : 2 Hours No. of Questions = 6
Date of Exam : 16/03/2024 (FN)
Note:
1. Please follow all the Instructions to Candidates given on the cover page of the answer book.
2. All parts of a question should be answered consecutively. Each answer should start from a fresh page.
3. Assumptions made if any, should be stated clearly at the beginning of your answer.

Q.1 In Diesel Engines, Explain how Hydrocarbon emission varies with lambda and draw it’s likely graph.
[5]

Q.2 What do you understand by Particulate Matter and NOx trade off in Diesel Engines and explain with
regard to Injection timing and EGR % [5]

Q.3 (a) Explain how lubricant oil contribute to the HC formation of SI Engines. b) Discuss how fuel
injector can play a role in HC formation in Diesel Engines.
[5]

Q.4 What are the functions of Diesel Oxidation catalyst(DOC) and explain the effect of excessive
temperature in DOC [5]

Q.5 Explain the working of 3 way catalytic converter in SI Engines and why it cannot be used in Diesel
Engines. [5]

Q.6 A typical naturally aspirated SI engine develops 1300 Kpa mean effective pressure. A 4-stroke, 4
cylinder Engine with 2 liter capacity needs to develop peak torque at 4000 RPM.

Estimate the Torque developed. Assuming the engine is undersquare with Stroke length to Diameter
ratio of 1.10, find out the Bore diameter and stroke length. Calculate the maximum RPM if mean
piston speed is to be limited to 18 m/s;

(Some useful relations: Pressure x volume x RPM = Power; Power = Torque x angular velocity;
Angular velocity = 2* pi * RPM). These are relations only, use appropriate units!. [5]
