A. Elaborate on one major difference between sex roles and gender roles.
When we say sex roles, it is our ability to reproduce and our roles based on our sexuality since
we were born. From our chromosomes, genitals, and our physical appearances. It something that
cannot be changed. While gender roles are our responsibilities as humans. It could be based from how
we were raised and on what we had an agreement with. There are no such excuses that It is related to
our sexuality. Gender roles differ from sex roles in a way that it is something that both sexualities can do
and must not be based on societal standards.
B. Have you been stereotyped based on your sexuality? Share its effects/impact in your life.
Yes, I have experienced it. When I was in grade school, I had a different preference in clothing.
Back then, I used to wear dark t - shirts and baggy pants because I find it comfortable and it is my style.
And the way I act was more stiffed than my other girl classmates. They often told me that I have a strong
aura and they frequently ask me if am I lesbian or not. And I find it offensive. The stereotyping does not
stop there when one time, one of my male classmates accused me that I am taking advantage of my girl
classmates and from there, I realized that it went too far. I was hurt and got offended so I told my
teacher what happened and she made an immediate action on my complaints towards my male
classmate and she reminded everyone that it is not right to make someone uncomfortable and make fun
of them because it is clearly bullying. Months after the incident, I noticed some changes in me. I could
say that the experience had a bad impact on me personally and psychologically. From the way I think,
and my appearance has changed unintentionally.
To clarify things, I am not lesbian nor bisexual. I claim myself as a girl, I am attracted to an
opposite gender and I do not have plans on dating other people with a similar gender as mine.
Gender biases in schools or institutions occur when the teachers’ minds are not open for
comprehension of the gender diversity of their students. In these present times, though most schools
are now aware and supports gender diversity of students, there are still few schools who still restrict
genders that are not belong to ‘girl and boy’ or the those who are part of LGBTQ community to claim
their identities. A simple instance of it is, there are schools that still does not allow transwomen to wear
their preferred uniform and have to follow the proper haircut that was standardized by the school.
Additionally, in most catholic schools it is prohibited to act feminine when you are a male because they
will form a speculation that you are a gay and worst, will insult you for being like it. Since their teachings
are based on religious forms and from the sacred book or the bible and in there, it was believed that
being part of other gender aside from girl and boy is a sin.
