strategic note-taking.
CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

This chapter introduces the background of the Study, Statement of the

Problem and Hypothesis, Significance of the Study, Scope and Limitation, and

Definition of Terms.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The art of effective studying is a cornerstone of academic success, with study

techniques playing a pivotal role in shaping learning outcomes. From time-tested

methods to innovative approaches, study techniques empower individuals to grasp

complex concepts, retain information, and perform optimally in academic pursuits. By

harnessing cognitive processes, organization strategies, and engagement

techniques, students unlock their full learning potential.

According to (https://www.bifrost.is/english/campus/counselling/study-

techniques) Study techniques are an array of skills which boosts student’s ability to

study, retain and recall information. These techniques can be learned and applied to

most fields of study and could include time management, goal setting, reading

techniques, mnemonics, glossary techniques and a positive attitude.

As the selected students form a critical stage in their educational journey

study techniques serves as the scaffolding upon which students construct their

understanding of diverse subjects, navigate complex curriculum, and ultimately excel

in their academic endeavors. From traditional methods like note-taking and active

reading to modern approaches such as spaced repetition, pomodoro study method,

Freyman technique, SQ3R method, blurting, active recall, and mnemonic devices,

these techniques offer a roadmap for efficient learning and knowledge retention. This
introduction explores the invaluable contributions of study techniques to the

academic performance of students, shedding light on how these strategies empower

learners to unlock their intellectual potential, achieve scholarly success and lastly it

can greatly help in order for them to enhance their academic performances.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

1). What are the long-term effects of different study techniques on

comprehension, application, and skill flexibility beyond instant/ immediate (ambot)

assessments?

2). Which strategies may be used to assist students in successfully

implementing cognitive abilities, such as self-management and reflection, into their

study methods in order to improve their academic performance?

3). Which study technique is the best for students in attaining knowledge?

4). What are the contributions of each and every study techniques in

enhancing their ability to gain information and improve their individual grades and

academic performance?

5). Which study techniques shows/demonstrate the highest connection in

improving one’s academic performance across different subject areas?

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

The theoretical framework for this study is grounded in the cognitive load

theory, which suggests that the working memory of individuals has a limited capacity
for processing information. Therefore, effective learning strategies involve reducing

extraneous cognitive load and enhancing the cognitive processing capacity by

organizing and structuring information in a meaningful way. This theory suggests that

study techniques that help students to manage their cognitive load effectively, such

as summarizing, note-taking, and active reading, are more likely to lead to better

academic performance.

Furthermore, the social cognitive theory also informs the theoretical

framework of this study. This theory posits that individuals’ learning and performance

are Influenced by their personal factors (e.g., motivation, self-efficacy),

environmental factors (e.g., peer pressure, teacher expectations), and behavioral

factors (e.g., study habits, time management). Therefore, the use of effective study

techniques may be influenced by these factors, and their impact on academic

performance may vary depending on the individual’s personal and environmental

contexts.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

The conceptual framework of this study is centered on the relationship

between study techniques and academic performance of senior high school

students. It assumes that there are various study techniques that students employ to

enhance their learning and understanding of academic concepts. These techniques

may include note-taking, summarizing, highlighting, mnemonic devices, active

reading, and others. The effectiveness of these techniques may vary from one

student to another, and it is hypothesized that the use of effective study techniques

contributes positively to academic performance.

Chapter 2

Review of related literature

This chapter presented the aims at providing a strong foundation to this study

and literature or references gathered by the researchers that were anchored on. It

covers a review of existing relevant literatures which was explained according to its

concern. Such are presented as to connect the varied findings and theories in

relation to the independent and dependent variables.

Study techniques can help an individual to study and form his study habit.

Study techniques are how someone studies in a way that he wants to remember

what he has studying. They are generally critical to success in school considering

the essential for acquiring good grades, and useful for learning throughout one’s life.

There are an array of study skills, which may tackle the process of organizing and

taking in new information, retaining information, or dealing with assessments. Study

techniques include mnemonics, which aid the retention of lists of information,

effective reading and concentration techniques, as well as efficient note taking

In some cases, Fielden (2004) stated that good study habits help the student

in critical reflection in skills outcomes such as selecting, analyzing, critiquing, and

synthesizing. While in the study of Nneji (2002) he added that study habits are

learning tendencies that enable students work privately.

Study technique refers to a student’s method in terms of improving one’s

academic performances and knowledge. Each student has unique study techniques

that vary depending on his preferences for studying time and other factors. It is up to
the individual if he will become bored while browsing notes and can procrastinate

(put off completing anything) due to distractions such as social networking, media

exposure, gaming addiction, and so on. Studying not only prepares students to thrive

in class, but it also reinforces previously taught lessons. Studying refreshes the

lectures and reading materials. Studying is simply reviewing and memorizing new

knowledge. The extent of a student’s learning in academics may be determined by

the grades earned after a period of study has been completed. It is assumed that a

grade is the key indicator of such learning. If a learner obtains high grades, it is

assumed that they have learned a lot, whereas low ratings imply less learning.

However, the instructor should encourage the learning process, and the teacher will

also assist in better understanding their pupils’ diverse learning styles. As a result, it

is intended that they might design more effective approaches for teaching their

subject matter, particularly at the elementary level.

In fact, the website in how-to-study.com (2009) recommended some tips in

improving study habits and suggested that the student should try not to study all the

subjects in just a period. It also added that if you try to do too much studying at one

time, you will tire and your studying will not be very effective. Space the work you

have to do over shorter periods of time. Taking short breaks will restore your mental

energy.

Additionally, Mark E. Thompson (2005) undoubtedly affirmed to Mark Crilly’s

(2000) study that other students are able to balance social activities with good study

habits. A diversion from studies will alleviate stress and help prevent from becoming

fatigued. He said that a student should make sure that he must take a break for an

hour after studies to meet with friends, to play some cards, work out at the gym, or to

gab with a new acquaintance. For this way, that student will find concentration when
he does study taking intermittent 10 minute breaks or more every 45 minutes or so

(pomodoro method).

The study focuses on the contribut”ons of study techniques to the academic

performance of the students and determine what is the best study technique or

method for each and every individual.study techniques are methods used to learn.

Humans are continuously learning new things, thus it is critical to understand that

what works for one person does not always work for another. However, it is still

crucial that students remain consistent with their academics.According to study habit

theories, pupils are divided into two categories. The first type includes pupils who

study for shorter periods of time, have good concentration, and can achieve good

grades with little effort. The second category includes pupils who have poor

concentration and require a lot of effort to achieve decent results. With a regular

study habit, the youngster will study when it is judged appropriate.

To summarize, study techniques and habits may differ from student to

student because not everyone can accomplish the same learning style as others and

they differ also in what techniques they need to use in order for them to learn more

efficiently. There are numerous things that might influence a student’s study

techniques and habits but it is entirely up to him to manage his studies without

regard for the obstacles and eventually develop an efficient study techniques and

routine.

Review of related studies:

A lot of studies suggest that the use of study techniques can greatly influence

or contribute to academic performance. Based on STUDY HABITS AND ITS IMPACT

ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN ENGLISH OF SECONDARY SCHOOL

STUDENTS IN KABURGI REGION by Ranju T Nair , the research findings revealed

that there is a positive correlation between study habits and academic performance

in English. Therefore it was concluded that the use of study techniques can improve

students’ academic performance and helps them in attaining much complicated

information. According to Azzopadi and Camilleri (2018) , study habits and perceived

level of difficulty of specific topics is vital for the students to give support, which will

lead to higher academic achievement. Numan and Hasan (2017) studied the effects

of study habits on test anxiety and academic achievement. Their findings explained

that the study habits have a significant effect on test anxiety and academic

achievement . It was concluded that students with effective study habits perform

better academically than students with poor study habits. Various research studies

have shown that effective study techniques can lead to improved academic

achievement, better retention of information, and enhanced critical thinking skills.

One such study conducted by researchers at the University of California,

Riverside, found that students who used active learning strategies, such as creating

mind maps, practicing problem-solving, and engaging in group discussions,

performed better on exams compared to those who relied solely on traditional

lecture-based learning. The study also found that these active learning strategies

were particularly effective for students from under represented backgrounds.

Another study, published in the Journal of Educational Psychology, examined

the impact of self-regulated learning strategies on the academic performance of

international students studying in the United States. The researchers found that

students who used strategies like those of study techniques mentioned had higher
level of knowledge and learning absorption and were more likely to persist in their

studies compared to those who did not use these strategies.

In addition to these studies, there have been numerous initiatives and

programs aimed at improving study techniques among senior high school students.

And that may be used and implemented to harness their skills and abilities and

techniques in gathering, memorizing, organizing and retaining information .

Moreover, the increasing use of technology in education has also played a

significant role in enhancing study techniques among senior high school students.

Online platforms and mobile apps offer personalized learning experiences,

interactive content, and real-time feedback, all of which can help students improve

their study habits and academic performance.

Overall, the contribution of study techniques to the academic performances of

senior high school students related to local and foreign studies has been significant.

By implementing effective study strategies, students can improve their learning

outcomes, better prepare for exams, and enhance their overall academic

experience. With the continued development of technology and the growth of

educational initiatives, it is likely that the impact of study techniques on academic

performance will only continue to be of great help and importance.

Synthesis

The contribution of study techniques to academic performances of students

has been a topic of interest for researchers and educators alike. Several studies and

related literature have been conducted to understand the impact of various learning

strategies on student achievement. This synthesis aims to provide an overview of the

key findings from these studies and related literature and highlight their implications

for academic success.

Study techniques refers to a student’s method in terms of improving one’s academic

performances and knowledge.

One of the related literature for this research and that provides a clear and

evident effect of study techniques was for Fielden (2004) who stated that good study

habits help students in critical reflection in skills outcomes such as selecting ,

analyzing, critiquing and synthesizing. Another study from Azzopadi and Camilleri

(2018) who explained that study habits and perceived level of difficulty of specific

topics is vital for the students to give support, which will lead to higher academic

achievement. It is of very importance for students to have their own method of

studying as for the fact that humans are continuously learning new things . The

same goes for students in achieving good academic performances at school. A

supporting study from Numan and Hasan (2017) who studied the effects of study

habits on test anxiety and academic achievement. They concluded that students with

effective study habits or techniques perform better academically than students with

poor study habits or techniques. Various study research studies have shown that

study techniques can lead to improved academic achievement, better retention of

information and enhanced critical thinking skills.

In conclusion, the significance of study techniques in improving academic

performance cannot be overstated. By developing a range of study skills, including

active learning, spaced repetition, feedback, and time management, students can

enhance their ability to learn and achieve better academic result.

conclusions from data using statistical methods. It encompasses techniques such as

descriptive statistics, inferential statistics, and probability theory to make sense of

data and uncover patterns, trends, and relationships. Through statistical analysis, we

can quantify uncertainty, make predictions, and make informed decisions based on

evidence.

In addition, concepts like measures of central tendency, variability, hypothesis

testing, and regression analysis, all fundamental to understanding and effectively

utilizing statistics in various fields such as in these study in order for the researchers

to determine whether there are enough positive correlation of the contributions of

study techniques to the academic performance of the students. In this research the

researchers used Regression which is a type of analysis that uses statistical

methods in an attempt to explain and understand the relationships between the

independent variable or variables and a dependent variable and in order to help the

researchers to obtain the data that is needed in drawing a conclusion in this certain

topic.
