ECE 576 Advanced Photonics Homework 3

2
1. Show that J*a  J b = 12 S a  Sb .

2. Solve Problem 1.27 in page 63 of Photonics written by Yariv.

3. Solve Problem 1.31 in page 64 of Photonics written by Yariv.

4. We learned another form of the Fresnel equation:

sx2 s y2 sz2
+ + = 0,
v 2p − vx2 v 2p − v y2 v 2p − vz2

where vp = c/n and vk = c /  k /  0 = c / nk , k = x, y, z. Modify the equation to obtain a

quadratic equation for v 2p . Show that the quadratic equation has two distinct positive roots or

one multiple root.

⚫ Refer to RM02 to understand how to use normal surfaces for refraction analysis.

⚫ Refer to RM03, which is extracted from Principles of Optics written by E. Wolf, to

understand index ellipsoids.
