The texts you read in school are different from the texts you read during your leisure time. While
texts you read for pleasure, such as graphic novels or magazines, can be likened to the appeal of
sweet desserts, academic texts are more like the heavy main course. More often than not they
need to be chewed and savored for a long time before their meanings can be fully digested.
(Barrot, Sipacio 2016)
Watch the video “Academic Texts vs. Non-Academic Texts” in You Tube for the comparison
between academic and non-academic texts. (optional)
Typically formal
Clearly structured introduction, body and conclusion
Include information from credible and well-cited sources
Include a list of references
State critical questions and issues
Use precise and accurate words while avoiding jargon and colloquial expressions
Take an objective point-of-view
Use hedging or cautious language (may, might, estimate, probable, virtually, if true, likely)
SQ3R Method
- Survey (Skim the text, check heading, tables, diagrams and figures, read first few and
last sentences, get a “feel” of the text)
- Question (Annotate, develop questions on the text)
- Read (Look for answers, stop and slow down if not clear, thoroughly understand text)
- Recite/Recall (Recount main points, summarize, highlight/underline important points)
- Review (Refresh main points, evaluate information)
KWL Method
- In a table of three columns, write what you know about the topic (K), list down what you
want to learn (W), and write down what you learned (L).
Activity Sheets
Name: ____________________________________
A. Pre-Activity
Directions: Carefully read the following texts. If you think they are “academic” in nature,
write A on the blank before the number. For those statements that you consider to be “non-
academic” in nature, write NA on the blank.
Example:
Begin here:
______1. “The world is changing today, dear Argonax…the time of the Revoltech Knights has
come.”
______2. This is the first generation of students who are more proficient with technology than their
teachers are.
______3. The terrorists never stood a chance as they and their weapons vaporized in 3.006
seconds from the blast of the Corbian Orb.
______4. Raising his Rayon Shield to maximum, the bloodied Revoltech Knight ran full-force
towards the squad of Dragon Troopers.
______5. Teachers who fumble with technology will struggle to persuade students to focus on the
lesson.

Directions: Carefully read and study the lecture sheets, power point presentations, video
lessons and readings (to be sent/provided by the teacher), and answer the following questions
completely and appropriately. Answers can be hand or typewritten. If you opt for handwritten
documents, use a black-inked pen and yellow paper. If you prefer typewritten documents, use the
Arial Font Style, sized 12. Do not write anything on these sheets.
1. How are academic texts different from non-academic texts? How are they similar? Explain
your answers in a five to eight-sentence paragraph.
A. Academic texts are typically informal and colloquial in nature. They provide the reader
with rumors and hearsays from incredible sources and are always personal and
subjective in point-of-view.
B. As part of the critical reading strategies for an academic text, it is essential that a reader
annotate its important parts after reading and identify the author’s purpose.
C. The “S” in the SQ3R method stands for survey which basically means recounting the
main points of the text by highlighting and underlining them.
3. Why do you think academic texts are compared to the heavy main course in a meal?
C. Post Activity
Direction: Find one article related to your chosen strand (i.e., Tourism, Business,
Computers, Food Industry, etc) to read throughout the week. The text should be not less than 500
words in composition. After thoroughly reading the text, construct a KWL chart based on the text
read. Refer to B. Activity Proper for instructions on writing documents.
IMPORTANT NOTE: All answer sheets must be submitted at the end of the week by the parents.
Please coordinate with the subject teacher regarding the process of acquiring and submitting of
the sheets.
