Abstract
This report summarizes the industrial training undertaken at scientific devices Bombay Pvt
Ltd, a leading company in the flow meters industry, as a partial full fillment for obtaining a
diploma certificate and enhancing practical knowledge. The primary objective of the training
was to bridge the gap between theoretical learning and real-world application.
During the training period, I was assigned to the fitting shop, where I worked extensively on
rotameters and level indicators. My responsibilities included testing rotameters to ensure their
accuracy and reliability, troubleshooting fitting issues, and performing various other tasks
essential for the proper functioning of these devices. This hands-on experience allowed me to
gain a deeper understanding of the intricacies involved in the manufacturing and maintenance
of flow measurement instruments.

Industry Profile
1.1 Company Overview
Scientific Devices Bombay Pvt Ltd was established on July 20, 1992, with a vision to
become a leader in the flow meters industry. The company has grown significantly over the
years, establishing a reputation for quality and innovation in the field of measurement and
instrumentation. With its headquarters in Thane, Maharashtra, Scientific Devices Bombay
has built a robust infrastructure that supports its extensive operations and serves a wide range
of industries. [1]
Scientific Devices (Bombay)'s operating revenues range is INR 1 cr - 100 cr for the financial
year ending on 31 March, 2022. It's EBITDA has increased by 49.13 % over the previous
year. At the same time, it's book net worth has increased by 11.98 %. [1]
Every day, in INDIA, large quantities of liquids and gases such as oil, natural gas, water and
emissions are produced, transported and distributed. At each point where a transaction
occurs, a measurement is performed. To bill the amount of liquid or gas, flow meters are
used. Often, both the quantity and the quality of the liquid or gas are measured. [2]
A measurement error of just 0.1% can make a difference of millions of Rupees annually in a
large oil or gas pipeline. The parties involved, therefore, attach great value to reliable
measurements that are traceable to international measurement standards. Other industries that
attach great importance to calibrations include Chemical Process, Petrochemicals, Power
Generation, Oil & Gas, Pharmaceutical, Ship building and Cement Industries etc. [2]
Through our extensive knowledge and experience, SCIENTIFIC DEVICES has built up a
very good reputation especially in Chemical Process, Petrochemicals, Power Generation, Oil
& Gas, Pharmaceutical, Ship building and Cement Industries etc.
SCIENTIFIC DEVICES provides supply and calibration services in the area of flow,
pressure, level and temperature measurements.

Our calibration set up confirms to ISO/IEC 17025 as its calibration measurement provides an
impressive ±0.05% expanded uncertainty. The minimum accuracy level reached through this
method is 0.05%. The accuracy is usually better than 0.05%. This calibration method offers
many advantages, a calibration in flow, pressure and temperature adapted to all major brands,
a fast turnaround time, a calibration with customer specific requirements with a total
compliance to the product specifications. [2]

The company have 4 longest serving directors who serve for more then 30 years .
Each Directors have their different duties as shown in Fig. 1
2.1 Production Director: A Production Director oversees the entire production process in
a company. They ensure that manufacturing runs smoothly, efficiently, and on
schedule. Managing teams and resources to meet production targets. they make sure
that products are made on time, correctly, and at the right cost.[3]. A manager work’s
under Production Director .
2.2 Production Manager: Production Manager manages the production system of 2
divisions 1. flow division , 2.level division he assigns and direct the works to
supervisor try to solves the issues which occurred during the production period and
give the information of production to the production director. His works is to run the
daily production smoothly.
2.3 Supervisor (Both divisions): Supervisor have a work for managing the workers
giving them daily target for the works and giving the sufficient information about

product so the worker can make the product properly. he also done the paperwork of
daily production done and give information of daily production or any maintainance
related information to the manager.
2.4 Workers: The job of the worker is to work on different departments of the production
system like Fitting, Buffing, Machining etc. they play very crucial role in production
system. The quality of the product is depends on workers.
2.5 Designing Director: Designing Director is responsible for setting and executing the
creative vision of a company, ensuring that all design projects align with the brand's
identity and goals. All the product design of the company is approve by the designing
director . A designing manager works under the director
2.6 Designing Manager: Designing Manager oversees the day-to-day operations of the
design team, ensuring that projects are executed efficiently and meet quality standards.
He coordinate with clients and other departments to understand project requirements,
allocate resources, set deadlines, and monitor progress.[3]
2.7 Managing Director: Managing Director (MD) is the top executive in a company.
Their main job is to oversee the entire business, make major decisions, and ensure the
company runs smoothly and profitably. He set goals, develop strategies, and work with
other executives to achieve them. The MD also represents the company in public and
builds relationships with important stakeholders like customers, investors, and
partners.
2.8 Marketing Manager: Marketing Manager is responsible for promoting a company's
products or services. He plan and execute marketing campaigns, such as
advertisements, social media posts, and events, to attract and retain customers.
2.9 Sales Team: The sales team is responsible for selling a company's products or services
to customers. Their main tasks include finding potential customers, explaining the
benefits of the products, answering questions, negotiating prices, and closing deals.
They aim to meet sales targets and generate revenue for the company.
2.10Finance Manager: Finance Manager oversees a company's financial health. He
manage budgets, prepare financial reports, and analyze financial data to help the
company make informed decisions. His job is to ensure the company uses its money
wisely, stays profitable, and meets financial goals.
2.11Store Director: Store Director oversees the daily operations of a retail store. His
main responsibilities include managing staff, ensuring the store is well-stocked,
providing excellent customer service, and meeting sales targets. He also handle

budgeting, and maintaining the store's appearance. The goal of a Store Director is to
ensure the store runs smoothly and is profitable.[3]
2.12Store Manager: Store Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operations of a retail
store. He manage staff, ensure the store is clean and organized, keep track of
inventory, and provide excellent customer service. He also work to meet sales goals
and solve any problems that arise in the store.
2.13Store workers: Store workers help with the daily tasks in a retail store. Their duties
include stocking shelves, assisting customers, operating cash registers, and keeping the
store clean and organized. They mensure products are displayed correctly and help
with inventory management.

Major Instrument and Machines Used
3.0 Introduction:
There some instruments, machines used in industry which are very crucial for daily
production in the industry like lathes, welding machines, calibration machines etc.
3.2 Maintenance:

tightening bolts, ensuring proper alignment, maintaining the coolant system, and
inspecting electrical connections.
2. Radial Drilling Machine: Cleaning the machine to remove metal chips and dust,
lubricating moving parts and guides, and checking for wear or damage on components
like the spindle and drill head. Regularly inspect and tighten bolts, ensure proper
alignment.
3. Welding Machine: Store welding rods properly to prevent moisture absorption and
damage. Keep all components, including the torch and regulators, in good condition
by inspecting and cleaning them as needed. Cleaning the machine to remove spatter
and debris, inspecting and replacing worn or damaged parts like welding tips, cables,
and hoses.
4. Grinding Machine: Ensure the machine's components are aligned and balanced
correctly. Regularly check the coolant system for proper levels and function, tighten
any loose parts, and inspect electrical connections for safety and reliability. Inspecting
and replacing worn or damaged grinding wheels and belts.
5. Calibration machines: Checking and calibrating its measurement standards to ensure
accuracy, and inspecting for any signs of wear or damage. Regularly verify and adjust
alignment and mechanical components, maintain the software and firmware updates,
and ensure all electrical connections are secure.
6. Hydrotesting Equipment : Inspecting hoses, valves, and gauges for wear or leaks,
and ensuring all connections are secure. Regularly calibrate pressure gauges and
testing systems to maintain accuracy, and check the integrity of the pressure vessel or
container being tested. Additionally, inspect and maintain the hydraulic pump and
ensure proper fluid levels and cleanliness

Manufacturing Process
4.1 Introduction
For understanding the manufacturing process/ production system we will understand
the whole production of one product that is Glaas Tube Rotameter (GTR)

on flanges and other process like facing, marking etc on flanges and they also make
the float of (GTR) on the lathe machine. Then both material bodies and joint together
through welding after the welding of body with flange it is transfer to painting where
the proper paint coating is apply on (GTR) then its again goes to fitting shop where the
final assembly of the (GTR) occur after assembly hydrotesting is done under the
certain pressure to ensure that the assemble welded joints are properly fitted and leak-
proof then after labelling on (GTR) it goes for inspection before packaging then after
the inspection the product is approve then after packaging the product is dispatch to
the client.
4.3 Production planning/Plan layout:
We can observe the plan layout of Scientific Devices on Fig. 3 from which we can able to
understand the production planning more efficiently.
4.3.1 Fitting shop: In this department in every table there is work of different
production like the first two tables from right hand side on that mostly product
like level switches, glass tube manometer, some testing of electronic component
etc done on this table and on the other table there is only work of level indicators,
side mounted tube level indicator and magnetic level indicator while on the last
two tables there is only one product made which is glass tube rotameter the

worker at the fitting shop do the assembly of whole and process like drilling,
tapering, fixing, hydrotesting etc the supervisor give them a daily target to
complete.
4.3.2 Machining area : In machining area they use lathe machine for machining
process in this they make the different components of the product like flanges,
floats, hollow pipes, stopper, PTFE floats, pipe and flanges etc machining process
is done.
4.3.3 Welding area: In this area the component like pipes, flanges are joint together by
welding TIG welding is also done in this area to make it strong and leak proof.
4.3.4 Painting shop: Here the painting on product made of M.S to give them a coating
from resisting chemical attacks and corrosion after the painting the components
are kept on the drying area to dry the paint or coating.
4.3.5 Hydrotesting: Hydrotesting is done to make sure that the capacity of product
manufactured under the certain pressure and under that pressure the there is any
lose fitting of any components or the improper welding of parts can lead to a
leakage in product therefore hydrotesting is very essential for flow meters.
4.3.6 Buffing Dept.: If the product is made from S.S then it have its own ability to
resist the corrosion there painting is not done on product made of S.S but to give
shiny mirror polish finish is given at buffing department there are grinding
machines on which different wheels are used for polishing the parts of product.
4.3.7 Finishes good: When the product is fully finished the we pack it into polythene
bag and keep on the finishes good area where the inspection team will check each
and every product if there is any mistake or like check thew scales, check size of
every component with vernier calliper and with go gauges etc.
4.4 Products I worked on:
4.4.1 Tubular Level Indicator:

Tubular Level Indicator in Fig. 4 is used for visual liquid level observation is very common
in process industry. It is a simple and reliable device for direct reading in atmospheric or
pressurized tank applications. s the process level fluctuates, the level in the transparent glass
tube changes accordingly and gives local liquid indication. This is a very simple instrument.
It is flange mounted to the tank. [2]
4.4.2 Full view sight glass:
A Full view sight glass on Fig 5 is a device which is inserted in a run of pipe to observe the
flow of fluid in the pipe. To enhance the visibility of the flow When fluid flows through the
pipeline, it also flows through the sight flow indicator, allowing operators to see the
movement and characteristics of the fluid, such as color, consistency, and presence of
impurities. This is particularly useful in industrial applications where it is important to
monitor the quality and flow of the fluid, such as in the food and beverage, chemical, and
pharmaceutical industries. [2]
4.4.3 Glass Tube Rotameter:
A commonly used variable area flow meter is the rotameter shown in Fig.6. In this device,
the flow enters the bottom of a vertically placed tapered tube and causes the bob or 'float'
(which has higher density than the fluid) to move upwards. The float will rise to a point in the

tube where the drag force (upward direction) and buoyant force (upward direction) is
balanced by the weight of float (downward direction). [6]

Testing and Quality Assurance
Testing raw materials involves a comprehensive process to ensure they meet the high
standards required for accurate and reliable flow measurement. The procedure starts with a
visual inspection to detect any apparent defects or impurities. Samples of the raw materials
are then taken for laboratory testing, which includes chemical analysis to confirm the
material's composition and physical tests to evaluate properties such as tensile strength,
hardness, and corrosion resistance.

Once assembly id done, the finished flow meters undergo comprehensive testing to ensure
they meet all operational standards. This includes the hydrotesting where the meters are test
under the certain pressure to make sure the product capability to with stand in various
pressure condition and calibration tests where the meters are tested with known flow rates to
ensure accuracy, as well as endurance tests to evaluate performance under prolonged use and
varying conditions. The quality assurance procedure is governed by stringent protocols
aligned with ISO and other industry standards. Detailed records of all tests and inspections
are maintained. The final products are only released for shipment after passing all quality
checks, ensuring that each flow meter meets the high standards of precision and reliability
expected by customers.

Safety Procedure followed
Employees are equipped with necessary safety gear to reduce the risk of injury. This includes
hard hats to protect the head, safety glasses or goggles for eye protection, and gloves suited to

specific tasks. Workers wear safety shoes to prevent foot injuries and high-visibility clothing
to ensure they are easily seen. By following these safety measures, Scientific Devices
Bombay Pvt Ltd ensures a safe and healthy workplace for all employees.
Preventive maintenance is a critical component of the safety program. This involves routine
inspections and servicing of all machinery and equipment, including hand carts, to identify
and address potential issues before they become serious problems. Scheduled maintenance
tasks, such as lubrication, calibration, and parts replacement, are carried out to ensure that all
equipment operates efficiently and safely. Any deviations from standard operating conditions
are promptly corrected to prevent equipment failures that could lead to accidents.

Practical Experience in Industry
During my 6 weeks experience at Scientific Devices Bombay Pvt Ltd I was assign in fitting
shop of the company where my responsibility is to works for production of Glass tube
rotameter and I gained a lot hands on experience from very 1 st day of training they had given
me small works like cleaning finish bodies, tapering to at the ending training I am able to
assemble whole Glass tube rotameter with good perfection.
Despite of glass tube rotameter I also done works of product like Magnetic level indicator,
Tube level indicator and Full view sight glass I have also learn the assembly of Full view
sight glass. Throughout this experience I gained lot of practical skills on machines from the
operations like drilling, hydrotesting, machining on lathe some little welding.

Quality control was integral to my experience. I conducted thorough inspections and tests to
identify any defects or deviations from specifications. This included visual inspections,
dimensional checks, and functional tests to ensure that each flow meter met the required
standards for performance and reliability.

Challenging Experience Encountered
During my first experience working at Scientific Devices Bombay Pvt Ltd, I faced several
challenges due to my limited practical skills. As an intern new to the company, I initially
struggled with hands-on tasks such as punching and drilling on rotameter bodies. My
inexperience led to difficulties in handling these tasks effectively, which became apparent
when I accidentally broke a drill while working. This incident was particularly disheartening
as it highlighted my lack of familiarity with the tools and processes.
Despite these setbacks, I was fortunate to work alongside a team of supportive and
understanding coworkers. Rather than expressing frustration or dissatisfaction, they took the
time to guide me through the proper techniques and offered valuable advice on improving my

skills. Their patience and willingness to help created a positive learning environment and
made it easier for me to overcome my initial challenges.
Handling instruments and performing precise tasks continued to be a struggle at times, but I
remained determined to improve. I dedicated extra time to learning and practicing the
necessary skills, often seeking guidance from more experienced colleagues. As time went on,
I gradually became more proficient in my tasks, gaining confidence and competence in using
tools and equipment effectively.
This experience was a significant learning opportunity for me. It taught me the importance of
perseverance, adaptability, and the value of supportive teamwork in overcoming initial
difficulties. By embracing the challenges and learning from my mistakes, I was able to
develop my practical skills and contribute more effectively to the team. The growth I
experienced during this period has been instrumental in shaping my approach to hands-on
work and has prepared me for future challenges in my career.

Conclusion
This training period has equipped me with extensive hands-on skills in the manufacturing and
quality control of flow measurement instruments, reinforcing the critical role these processes
play in producing high-quality products.
Throughout the six weeks, I was immersed in various aspects of production, from assembling
and testing rotameters to handling maintenance tasks and ensuring quality control. The
challenges faced, such as initial struggles with practical skills and overcoming them with the
support of experienced colleagues, highlighted the importance of perseverance, adaptability,
and teamwork in a professional setting.

The structured approach of the company towards preventive maintenance and safety
procedures ensured a secure and efficient working environment. Learning about the
organizational structure and interacting with different departments provided a
interconnectedness of various roles in achieving common goals.
This training has not only enhanced my technical abilities but also instilled a deeper
understanding of the flow meters industry, preparing me for future professional endeavors.
The experience at Scientific Devices Bombay Pvt. Ltd. has been instrumental in shaping my
skills and knowledge, laying a strong foundation for a successful career in
