A Detailed Lesson Plan in Science 9

I. Objectives:

A. Content Standards:
The learners demonstrate an understanding of the different patterns
of inheritance.

B. Performance Standards:
The learners should be able to demonstrate precautionary
measures before, during, and after a typhoon, including following
advisories, storm signals, and calls for evacuation given by
government agencies in charge.

C. Learning Competencies:
The learners should be able to explain how typhoons develop and
how it is affected by landmasses and bodies of water.

D. Learning Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
1. explain the effects of the winds given in certain storm warning
signals;
2. recognize the importance of knowing the different storm warning
signals posed by PAGASA; and
3. create a slogan on how to mitigate risks and hazards caused by a
typhoon.

II. Content:

attendance.

4. Review/Drill

Class let's have a short recap of the

lesson that we discussed yesterday.
What did you learn from our lesson?
Ma’am, we learned about the
concept of weather forecasting
and the instruments used in
predicting weather.

What does weather forecasting Weather forecasting involves

involve? gathering and analyzing data
which includes the weather and
tracking of typhoons.

Correct! Weather forecasting includes

gathering and reporting weather-

related information from different

weather stations not only here in our
country but all around the globe.

Aside from weather forecasting, what We also learned about the

instruments, ma’am.

Ma’am, the instruments used in

What are those weather forecasting weather forecasting are
instruments? barometers, thermometers,
psychrometer, hygrograph, rain
gauge, radiosonde, and radars.

That’s it. Those instruments are used

by weather stations to track or spot
developing typhoons.

B. MOTIVATION

We will have an activity called “One

Blow at a Time”. I have here a pyramid
made up of paper cups. I need three
volunteers to come in front. I will give
each of you balloons of different sizes.
All you have to do is to use the air None Ma’am.

stacked paper cups.

the paper cups. Ma’am, it may cause some cups

What about the air in the second

What can we conclude about our
activity?

What does the air inside the balloon

represent?

What about the paper cup pyramid?

(Answers will be withheld.)

Let’s find out as we dig deeper into our

main topic.

C. PRESENTATION OF THE LESSON

Based on our activity a while ago, the

way we predicted what will happen to
the paper cups after releasing air from
different balloons relates to how
meteorologists predict the impact of
the wind brought by typhoons on our
environment and in our lives. Thus, we
have public storm warning signals,
which will be our lesson for today.

PAGASA. What does PAGASA stand for?

Indeed! The Philippine Atmospheric

Geophysical and Astronomical Services
Administration, or PAGASA, is in
charge of giving locals in the
Philippines reliable meteorological
information and services, such as wind
speed and typhoon track.

When a typhoon hits our area, we tend

to switch on the TV to get updates. We
commonly hear the term “Storm
Warning Signals”.
There will be an approaching

experience, what does it indicate when
storm signals have been raised?

Absolutely! Public Storm Warning

Signals or PSWS are raised to warn the
public of incoming weather
disturbances. They are given far in
advance before the typhoon hits the
land in order to give ample time for
people to prepare for the typhoon’s
coming. No Ma’am. We will not yet
experience it because it is just a

if your locality is raised under a storm
signal, will you experience the
typhoon’s impact at the same time as
the announcement of the weather

Very good! You will not still experience

the intensity of the typhoon because

Public Storm Warning Signals serve

only as a signal or warning for us to be
aware of what will happen in the next
few hours.

I have here a table that shows

PAGASA’s Public Storm Warning
Signals. Analyze the data that are
presented in the table. (The students will analyze the
data presented in the table.)

Correct. Therefore, what can we infer in storm warning signals.
about that information?

Exactly right! Now, why do storm

signals change over a given locality?

Well said! When a typhoon moves

toward a certain locality, the wind will
be faster and stronger. And if the
typhoon passes through that certain
location, the storm signal will be
decreased.

We mentioned in our activity a while

ago that the faster and stronger the
wind, the more destructive it is. So

here is a table that shows what we will

expect after a storm warning signal is
raised.

Based on the data presented in the

branches of small trees may be broken

Signal number 5, ma’am.
That’s right during signal number 1,
we expect that there will be light to no
damage at all. There will be stronger Ma’am, the higher the storm

What about the storm warning signal

where we expect widespread damage
to high-risk structures, large trees are
uprooted, and most residential
buildings are severely damaged?

What is the relationship between the Typhoon Yolanda, ma’am.

storm warning signal and the expected
impact?

That’s correct. We can conclude that

when a storm warning signal is high,
the impact caused by the typhoon will
be severe.

To exemplify that, what is the name of

the well-known typhoon that hit the
Philippines on November 3-11, 2013,
specifically in the Visayas region? Ma’am, the wind is strong.

That’s right. It is the Bagyong Yolanda

or Typhoon Haiyan. Here is a video clip

from CNN News that shows the impact There is a torrential rainfall which

City.
(The teacher shows a video clip of the
impact of Bagyong Yolanda after signal
number 5 was raised)

Will you describe the wind brought by

the typhoon?

What about the amount of rain and the

damage caused by typhoon Yolanda
based on the video?

You’ve got it right. To relate this to my

question from the activity a while ago,
the air released from the balloon
signifies the wind brought by the
typhoon and the paper cup pyramid
represents the affected community.
When the air brought by the typhoon is
stronger, the more damage it causes
to the affected community.

For students like you, it is important to

identify these storm warning signals
and their impacts for you to identify
whether it is safe for you to attend
school or not. And to inform you, this
table presents when to suspend
classes according to DepEd Order No

Any questions and clarifications?

It is good that you all understand

everything about Public storm warning
signals.

E. APPLICATION

One very helpful feature of PAGASA’s

Public Storm Warning Signals is the list
of precautionary measures people can
take to be prepared for the coming
typhoon and how much time they have
left to prepare before the strong winds
affect their locality.

I have here a graphic organizer and a

list of various precautionary measures
before, during, and after a typhoon. In
the first column, I want you to sort out
all the precautionary measures we
need to follow BEFORE a typhoon. In
the second column, choose all the
precautionary measures we need to
take DURING a typhoon and lastly,
the third column is for precautionary
measures we need to do AFTER a
typhoon.

The signals provide crucial information

for public preparation and response to
potential threats from weather
disturbances like typhoons.
