THE GOAT, THE LION AND THE SNAKE

One-day Goat was grazing quietly on the edge of the forest when Lion came. “Good morning,
Goat” said Lion.” Why are you all alone?” “I always graze alone,” replied Goat rather sadly.
“Sometimes I feel lonely, but most of the time I am quite content and want for nothing.”
I’ve just had a feast for all the animals and I was surprised that you did not come,” said Lion.
“Why should I come to pay their respects to me because I am the king of the forest. I am the
strongest animal in the forest. All the animals fear me. Don’t you know that?

I am sorry but I didn’t realize that. In fact, I’m very surprised to hear that because I know an
animal who is much more dangerous than you,” replied Goat. “More dangerous than me? You
must be joking! No animal is more dangerous than me. Who is that creature that you talk
about?” asked Lion angrily.

It is true that your teeth are large and your claws are sharp and your roar is loud and your
appearance is imposing, but the creature I am talking about is to be feared more than you. This
creature could easily beat you in a fight,” Goat told Lion.

By now Lion was very angry. He knew that he was the strongest and most feared of animals.
“Who is this creature who is more feared than I?” he asked. “The snake,” replied Goat. Lion
smiled scornfully.

“What, that crawling reptile which feeds on mice and sleeping birds? That soft vine-like creeping
thing that coils itself round branches of trees? Let me show you how foolish you are. Tell this
creature that I will fight it and kill it. I will show you who is the most feared animal in the forest!
What will you give me if I win?” he asked Goat.

“If you survive the fight, I will be your slave and I will do anything you ask. But what will you
give me if I lose?” asked Goat. “Whatever you want please,” replied Lion. “Alright” said Goat,
“I’ll have one hundred branches of bananas, but you must bring them here before the fight
begins.”

Goat went into the forest to find Snake. He was sleeping lazily, coiled round a branch. Goat
explained that Lion wanted to fight with him and told him he would beat Lion if he followed
some simple instructions. “First of all, you must sit in a bush about one meter above the ground,
“he said. “Secondly, when Lion comes, raise your head high and boldly. After that, ask Lion to
come nearer so that you can see him better. Then, when he comes near, bite him in the eyebrows
and finally, wind yourself around his neck. Lion will soon die.”
“What will you do for me in turn for this?” asked Snake. “I will be your servant and friend for all
time,” replied Goat.
