Toffee, the dog, is in good health & settling into her new home after being in a fatal car crash a few days before Christmas. She was travelling back from Calgary on Dec. 21 with her former owner, to be delivered to the home of Lisa & Steven Hawkins in Merritt. But the SUV she was travelling in crossed the centre line near Rogers Pass and was struck by a transport truck. The driver, a 36-year old Burnaby woman and her 4& 6-year old daughters were tragically killed in the accident. Lisa was good friends with the woman, and the families are very close. She thought the dog she had adopted from her friend was also lost in the crash, but police told her the dog was not in the vehicle. Lisa had the hope that the dog was alive, and on Boxing Day, 5 days after the accident, Lisa & Steven went to the crash site and shouted the dogs name ... and there she was. She popped her little head up on a snow bank, and I went running to her, definitely with tears in my eyes," said Lisa. Toffee was apparently thrown clear and somehow survived the crash, as well as 5 nights alone on the mountain pass. "With everything that has happened, Toffee is now more of a blessing to our Source: cbc.ca family," Lisa said.

Kim Leclair On Wednesday January 11, NV Search and Rescue will be holding a new class for Basic Ground Search and Rescue training. This is a pre-requisite for becoming a member. The course will run every Wednesday from 6:30-8:30pm in Rm 31 at NVIT until May. NVSAR will also be holding its regular monthly meeting on Monday January 9th at 6:30pm in the airport basement for anyone interested in attending. Monthly meetings are held the second Monday of every month at the airport. For further inquiries contact Cst. Now, a new name to better reflect their mission and their recent work. The group cares for abandoned, abused, and neglected animals within the valley. They offer a Trap, Neuter/Spay, and Release (TNR) program for the Feral Cats and feeding stations throughout the region. With a storefront Cat Shelter and next-door community connections, NV Animal Rescue Society is hoping to adopt out as many healthy cats to happy homes. Their TNR program for the towns feral feline community continues to keep cats healthy and the number of unwanted animals down. Telus has invested $1 million in a new wireless site south of Merritt to enhance 4G wireless voice and highspeed Internet services along 25 km of Coquilhalla Hwy and surrounding areas between Merritt and Shovelnose. The site was completed and turned on earlier last week. This improvement gives motorists on the Coquihalla as well as area residents and businesses the convenience of making wireless calls from wherever they are, expands access to 911, and allows for great broadband service where it may not be possible to build wired Internet access. The site brings customers HSPA+ technology, with voice service, broadband internet at an average of 6 or 7 Mbps depending on signal strength comparable to a wired connection in your home.
