5-Step Lesson Plan for Class 4 (Science)

Topic: Explore How Human Actions, Such as Urbanization and Population

Growth, Can Affect a Habitat
Grade: 4
Duration: 40 minutes
SLOs Covered:

1. Explore how urbanization affects a habitat.

2. Understand how population growth impacts a habitat.

1. Introduction (5 minutes)

 Teacher Action: Begin with a brief discussion to capture students'

attention. Ask:

o "What do you think happens to animals and plants when we build

houses or roads in a forest?"

o "How does the increase in the number of people in a city affect

the environment around them?"

o Use a mix of English and Urdu for better understanding: "Jab

hum shaher barhatay hain ya zyada log aatay hain, to kya aap
sochtay hain ke pedh-pauday aur janwar par kya asar hota hai?"

 Objective: Help students start thinking about the impact of human

activities on habitats and environments.

2. Teacher Explanation (10 minutes)

 Teacher Action: Explain the key concepts of urbanization and

population growth:

o Urbanization: When more buildings, houses, and roads are

built, animals and plants lose their homes (habitats).
o "Jab zameen par buildings aur rastey ban jate hain, to janwaron
aur paudon ko apni jagah chorni parti hai."

o Population Growth: Human Population is increasing every day.

When there are more people in an area, more land is needed for
homes, food, and roads. This also affects plants and animals.

 "Jab zyada log ikattha ho jatay hain, to zameen ka istemal

barh jata hai, aur janwaron ki jagah kam hoti jati hai."

The habitat continues to disappear due to an increase in human

population and urbanization.

With the loss of habitat, wildlife of the habitat is also lost.

 Use real-life examples:

o "Think about Islamabad or Lahore, where trees are being cut

down to build more houses and roads."
3. Guided Practice (7 minutes)

 Group Activity: Divide students into small groups and give them a
picture of a forest and a city.

o Ask them to compare both pictures and discuss:

 "What do you see in the forest that is not in the city?"

 "How do you think building more houses affects animals?"

 Teacher Circulation: Walk around the classroom, listen to

discussions, and ask guiding questions in both English and Urdu.

o "Aap ko lagta hai ke yeh pedh aur janwar shaher mein kyun nahi
hain?"

4. Independent Practice (10 minutes)

 Individual Activity: Students draw a simple picture showing how a

forest can change into a city. Ask them to label which animals and
plants may lose their homes.

o Encourage creativity, but keep it simple. If possible, provide basic

coloring pencils for students to illustrate their ideas.

o Example: A student may draw trees being cut down and roads
being built, with animals leaving the forest.

5. Conclusion (5 minutes)

 Teacher Summary: Reinforce the key ideas by summarizing the

effects of urbanization and population growth:

o Urbanization: "Building cities and roads can destroy the homes

of animals and plants."

o Population Growth: "More people means more land is needed,

which can reduce the space for wildlife."

 Ask a quick question to wrap up:

"What can we do to help save the homes of animals while still building
our cities?"
Assessment: Exit Ticket (3 minutes)

 Instructions: Ask the students to answer the following questions in 3

minutes. This will check their understanding of the topic.
