    Use the number line to work out the following:

    (a) (+13) - (4)

    (b)On a certain day, a student measured the temperature inside a deep freezer and found out that it
    was -3°C, while the room temperature was 150 C. What was the temperature difference between the
    room and the deep freezer?

    2. Work out :

    3/8(11/4 - 5/4) ÷ 1/8 × 5/4 + 14/3

    3. Three members of a society shared profits. One member received 1/6 of the profits. Another member
    received 1/9 of the profits.

    (a) Find the fraction of the profit received by the third member.

    (b) If the third member received Ksh. 13 000, find the amount of the profit received by each of the other
    two members.

    5. Express as a fraction:

    6. Write 15.786349 to the nearest:

    (a) Thousandths

    7. A textbook has 116 leaves and 2 cover leaves. Each leaf weighs 0.85 g while each cover weighs 1.5 g.

    Find the mass of the textbook.


    8. Round off each of the following numbers correct to the given significant figures in brackets:

    9. A bag and its content has a mass of 15.1 kg. It contains 4 packets of rice each of mass 2.2 kg and 3
    packets of beans each of mass 1.5 kg. Find the mass of the bag.

    10.Asquare design printed on a wall measures 2.32 m in length. Find its area in square metres.

    11.The area of a square tile is 9.61 m2. What is the length of each side?

    12. Using log table work out:

    (a) Square of 0.2394.

    (b) Square root of 0.234.


    13. Two labourers working at the same rate can take eight days to complete a task. Find out how long
    four labourers working at the same rate will take to complete the same task.

    14. The number of learners in a class is 45. When the number of girls ts subtracted from the number of
    boys, the difference is five. Find the number of boys and the number of girls in the class.

    15. Calculate the surface area of an unsharpened circular pencil in the shape of a cylinder whose
    diameter is 0.7 cm and height is 17 cm.

    16. Jumba invested Ksh. 850 000 in a bank which paid 8% simple interest per annum. Find interest
    earned on savings after a period of six years.

    17. Fabrah bought a tea estate at a cost of Ksh. 175 000 000 three years ago.The value of the estate
    appreciates at the rate of 5% per annum.

    (a) Find the present value of the tea estate.

    (b) Suppose the value of the estate depreciated at the same rate for three consecutive years, what could
    be it's present value?

    18. The cash price or a car was Ksh. 875 000. Tony bought it on hire purchase terms.

    The hire purchase price was Ksh. 100 000 more than the cash price.

    (a) Calculate the hire purchase price.

    (b) Calculate the deposit if he paid four equal monthly instalments of Ksh.200 000.

    19. Njambi filled a cylindrical tank with water. The tank is 2 m high and has a diameter of 2.8 m. (Use π=
    22/7)

    (a) Work out the capacity of the tank in litres.

    (b) Later in the week, she decided to paint her tank. She transferred the water to fill a cuboidal
    container 4 m long and 2.2 m wide Calculate the height of the Container.
    20. Two exercise books and three pencils cost Ksh. 190. Five similar exercise books and two similar
    pencils cost Ksh. 290. Find the cost of each exercise book and each pencil using

    (a) Substitution method

    (b) Verify your answers using Elimination method.

    21. The diameter of the wheels of Wagio's bicycle is 80 cm.

    (a) Calculate the circumference of her bicycle wheel.

    (b) One day, Wagio cycled her bicycle and made 200 revolutions. What distance did she cover?
