3. Find out the numbers of R [20/4 (100,…..1000)] derived series.

4. Write a detailed note on standardization.

5. Explain asthetic and ergonomics consideration in design.

6. Find out the numbers of the R5 basic series from 1 to 10.

7. It is required to standardize eleven shafts from 100 to 1000 mm diameter. Specify their

diameters.

8. Differentiate between

i. Rigid and flexible coupling

ii. Protected and unprotected flange coupling.

9. What is coupling? Classify the couplings

10. Design muff coupling to connect two steel shafts transmitting 40 kW at 350 rpm.
The material for shafts and key is plain carbon steel for which allowable shear and crushing
stresses are 40 MPa and 80 MPa respectively. The material for muff is cast iron for which
allowable shear stress is 15 MPa.

11. Design and draw a protective type of cast iron flange coupling for a steel shaft transmitting
15 kW at 200 r.p.m. and having an allowable shear stress of 40 MPa. The working stress in
the bolts should not exceed 30 MPa. Assume that the same material is used for shaft and key
and that the crushing stress is twice the value of its shear stress. The maximum torque is 25%
greater than the full load torque. The shear stress for cast iron is 14 MPa.

12. What is the function of a spring? In which type of spring the behavior is non-linear?

13. Discuss the materials and practical applications for the various types of springs.

14. Design a helical compression spring for a maximum load of 1000 N for a deflection of 25
mm using the value of spring index as 5. The maximum permissible shear stress for spring
wire is 420 MPa and modulus of rigidity is 84 kN/mm2.

15. Classify different types of bearings.

16. List diff. types of Rolling contact bearing. Also write advantages and disadvantages of
Angular contact bearing.

17. A single-row deep groove ball bearing No. 6002 is subjected to an axial thrust of 1000 N and
a radial load of 2200 N. Find the expected life that 50% of the bearings will complete under
this condition.
18. A taper roller bearing has a dynamic load capacity of 26 kN. The desired life for 90% of the
bearings is 8000 h and the speed is 300 rpm. Calculate the equivalent radial load that the
bearing can carry.

19. A ball bearing is operating on a work cycle consisting of three parts:

A radial load of 3000 N at 720 rpm for 30% of the cycle,
A radial load of 7000 N at 1440 rpm for 40% of the cycle and
A radial load of 5000 N at 900 rpm for remaining cycle.
The basic dynamic capacity of the bearing is 307000 N. Calculate the rating life of bearing in
Hours.

20. Explain valve gear mechanism in IC Engine.

21. State the main parts commonly used in materials handling equipment’s along with neat
sketch.
22. What do you understand by 6 x 37 ropes? Explain with neat sketch the different rope section.

23. The rolling contact ball bearing are to be selected to support the overhung countershaft. The
shaft speed is720 r.p.m. The bearings are to have 99%reliability corresponding to a life of
24000 hours. The bearing is subjected to an equivalent radial load of 1 kN. Consider life
adjustment factors for operating condition and material as 0.9 and 0.85 respectively.
Find the basic dynamic load rating of the bearing from manufacturer's catalogue, specified at
90% reliability.

24. A semi elliptic multi leaf spring is used for the suspension of the rear axle of a truck. It
consists of two extra full length and ten graduated length leaves including the master leaf.
The center to centre distance between the spring is 1200 mm and width of leaves is 60 mm.
The leaves are made of steel 55Si2Mo90 and Syt=1500 N/mm2 and E=207 GPa and factor of
safety is 2.5. The spring is to be designed for a maximum force of 30 kN. The leaves are pre
stressed so as to equalize stress in all leaves. Solve (1) thickness of the leaves (2) deflection at
the end of the spring.

25. It is required to design a helical compression spring subjected to a maximum force of 1.25
KN. The deflection of the spring corresponding to the maximum force should be
approximately 30 mm. the spring index can be taken as 6. The spring is made of patented and
cold drawn steel wire. The ultimate tensile strength and modulus of rigidity of spring
material are 1090 and 81370 N/mm2 respectively. The permissible shear stress for the spring
wire should be taken as 50 % of the ultimate tensile strength. Design the spring and solve (1)
