what prospects you have.

a. Who is the speaker of the above lines and whom is he addressing?


Alan Trevor the artist is addressing Hughie Erskine.
b. Who is referred to as ‘him’ asking about the person the speaker was
addressing?
Ans: Baron Hausberg, the richest man in Europe, is referred to as
‘him’. He was having his portrait painted as a beggar. Hughie
mistook him for a real one and gave the millionaire a sovereign. The
Baron was quite taken in by Hughie’s generosity.
c. What is the connection between ‘the colonel, the lovely Laura and
£10,000’?
Ans. Hughie liked Laura Merton, the daughter of a retired Colonel.
The Colonel was very fond of Hughie, but did not want his daughter
to get married to him. He told Hughie to come to him when he had
ten thousand pounds of his own.
d. What did Alan Trevor tell the old model about Hughie?
Ans: Alan Trevor told everything about Hughie to the old model. Alan told
him where Hughie lives, who is he, what is his income, about the colonel,
the lovely Laura, £10,000 and what prospects he has.

12. Who is a conjurer? What tricks did the conjurer perform?


Ans: A conjurer is an illusionist. The conjurer in the story performed
several tricks. His first trick was to take out a bowl of goldfish from an
empty cloth. Then, he performed the trick with Hindoostanee rings.
13. What reason does the boy give for snatching Mrs.Jones pocketbook?
Ans: The boy, Roger, admits to Mrs. Jones that he tried to snatch her pocketbook
because he wanted to buy some shoes. He is poor and thought stealing was the
only way to get the money he needed.
14. Why did the grandmother touch the narrator's feet on Dussehra?
Ans: The grandmother touched the narrator's feet on Dasara as a gesture
of respect and tradition. In many Indian cultures, during the festival of
Dasara, it is a custom for elders to show respect to younger individuals
who are pursuing education or learning, as a way to honor knowledge and
learning.

15. How does the poet exaggerate the pile of garbage? Justify with examples.
Ans: The poet exaggerates the pile of garbage through descriptions that
amplify its size and impact, such as ‘mountain of refuse’. This is an
exaggeration because none of these things can really happen. Piles of
garbage could never have the ability to reach the sky or break down walls.
In the poem, the author uses exaggeration to illustrate the impact of the
garbage on the household.

17. What were the different things the child longed to be while observing the banyan
tree?
Ans : While observing the banyan tree, the child longed to be various
things, inspired by the tree's majestic presence. They wished to be a
hermit, seeking solitude and wisdom; a warrior, drawing strength and
courage; and a king, imagining the tree as their royal canopy.
