1984 countries in retaliation for the 1980 Moscow
Olympics.

• Tokyo: The games were postponed to 2021 due to


the COVID-19 pandemic. There were numerous

difficulties, the Tokyo Olympics proceeded with
strict safety protocols.

Games

On 29 July 1948, the day of the
Opening Ceremony of the
London 1948 Olympic Games,
Dr. Guttmann organized the first
competition for wheelchair
athletes which he named the
Stoke Mandeville Games. They
involved 16 injured servicemen
and women who took part in
archery.

The Stoke Mandeville Games later
became the Paralympic Games
which first took place in Rome,
Italy, in 1960 featuring 400
athletes from 23 countries. Since
Seoul, Korea in 1988, the Games
have also taken part in the same
cities and venues as the Olympics.

It separates athletes by type and degree of disability, and is

Vinícius was the official


mascot of the Olympic Games,
and Tom was the official

Paralympic Games. Vinícius'
design represents Brazilian
wildlife, while Tom's design
represents Brazilian plant life.

The Refugee Olympic Team
The Refugee Olympic Team was first
announced in 2015 and made its debut at
the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Its athletes
are a symbol of hope for refugees around
the world, serving to increase global
awareness and attention to the scale of
the international refugee crisis. All the
athletes had been granted refugee status
by the UN.

Brazil

The first time that Brazil was present
in the competition was in 1920,
participating in all editions since then,
except for 1928, because of an
economic crisis.
Brazil is the best South American
country in the history of the Olympic
Games and the fourth biggest winner
in the Americas, behind only the
United States, Canada and Cuba,
respectively.

Maria Lenk

Swimmer Maria Lenk is a


big name in sport for
being the first South
American woman to take
part in an Olympic Games
- in Los Angeles in 1932.

Adhemar Ferreira da Silva

The first Brazilian double Olympic


champion, winning gold in Helsinki
in 1952 and Melbourne in 1956.
He held this title for 48 years
before other athletes managed to
beat him. He also broke the world
record for the sport four times in
a single day at the 1952 Helsinki
Games.

Antônio Tenório da Silva

Antônio is a Brazilian judoka,


considered the greatest
paralympic judoka in history. He
competes in both paralympic and
regular competitions. He is a
four-time Paralympic champion in
judo for the visually impaired.

Jerusa Geber Santos

Jerusa has represented Brazil in


four editions of the 2008, 2012,
2016 and 2021 Paralympic
Games, winning a total of four
medals. She competes in the T11
(tracker) class and holds the
class record, having covered
100m in 11s83.

The 33 rd edition of the Summer Olympic

and August 11th.

athletes in 48 sports.
Paris is as the main host city and 16
other cities throughout Metropolitan
