* A second look: Justin Durant played like he hadnt been to the playoffs since 1999
By Justin Rogers - MLive.com
Detroit Lions linebacker Justin Durant was all over the eld making plays in the Detroit Lions 38-10 win over the Chargers. While it hasnt quite been 12 years, its been some time since Detroit Lions linebacker Justin Durant had played in such a meaningful football game. After a successful college career at Hampton University which included three MEAC Defensive Player of the Year awards and three Divisison I-AA/FCS playoff appearances, Durant was drafted in the second round by the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2007. In Durants rookie year, he played in 13 games and the Jaguars went 11-5. They went on to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers in the opening round of the playoffs before being eliminated by the undefeated New England Patriots, 31-20. The Jaguars fell on hard times after that season going 2028 over the next three years, and missing the playoffs each time. After four years in Jacksonville, Durant opted to sign with Detroit prior to the 2011 season. On Saturday, with a playoff berth on the line for the Lions, Durant played like a man hungry for his rst postseason berth in four seasons. Durants energy and impact were apparent on Detroits rst defensive series. On the Chargers rst offensive snap, quarterback Philip Rivers faked a handoff to Ryan Matthews before setting the running back up with a screen to the right side. The play call appeared well designed with two blockers out in front of Matthews, but Durant went around the block of center Nick Hardwick and brought Matthews down from behind by the ankles for a one-yard gain before the back to get free into open space. On the next play, the Chargers tried to run Matthews off right tackle, behind blocking back Jacob Hester. Again it was Durant making the play, plowing through Hester to make contact with Matthews at the line of scrimmage, limiting to the back to a two-yard gain. The Chargers would end up picking up a rst down, but would be forced to punt four plays later -- a signicant accomplishment considering they had scored on their opening possession in their previous seven games. Durants play in the opening drive set the tone not only for a strong individual performance, but a strong defensive performance from the entire team. Here were a few other big plays by Durant, some of which are noted in the box score and others not:
On a 3rd-and-9 play from the San Diego 49 in the second quarter, Rivers swung a pass out to running back Mike Tolbert in the

The 5-foot-9, 243 pound Tolbert, with his massive size and low center of gravity is one of the most difcult players to tackle in the open eld in the NFL. Durant made a good read and was able to wrap Tolbert up for a three-yard gain, forcing the Chargers to punt. Later in the second quarter, on a 1st-and-10 play from the San Diego 32, the Chargers ran Matthews off right tackle, again behind Hester. Durant came up to the line with such speed and force, that both Hester and pulling guard Louis Vasquez had to block him, freeing safety Amari Spievey to come unblocked and stop Matthews for a three yard gain. On a 2nd-and-10 in the third quarter, the Chargers ran play-action. Durant came up to stop the run, but quickly recognized the fake, shadowing fullback Jacob Hester as he leaked out of the backeld. Durant was able to immediately drop the back after a short, three-yard reception. The Lions held a 24-7 lead, but San Diego threatened to cut it to a 10-point advantage on a 2nd-and-goal from the 3 with 5:33 remaining in the third quarter. The Chargers brought out the heavy package, bunching everyone at the line, attempting to power it in off the right edge with Tolbert. Durant, met and overpowered a lead block from Hester, taking away the edge and forcing Tolbert to cut the run back inside where he was swallowed up by Sammie Hill. The Chargers settled for a eld goal on the drive.

In all, Durant nished the game with 11 tackles (eight solo) and a sack on a busted halfback pass attempt, all while playing a key role in limiting San Diegos explosive tight end Antonio Gates to just four receptions and 40 yards.
