INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER SYSTEMS SERVICING
Introduction
Understanding how a computer works is the first step to understanding computer systems. A
singular computer has the power to utilize a great number of functions. However, a computer
system incorporates other elements along with the computer to be able to do more. In the
simplest terms, a computer system is a system of devices that work together to take input,
process and store data, and display output. It is composed of the following parts
Lessons 1 Hardware/Software/User
The Hardware
This is any part of the computer system that is tangible, such as the computer’s physical
components, like the processing units and storage devices, and peripherals, such as the input and
output devices.
The Software
Software exists virtually inside a computer. It may be a piece of data, a program, or a set of
instructions that the computer system can run.
The User
This is you. You are in charge of telling a computer system what to do. Without a user, the
computer will not have data to store. It cannot run programs or execute instructions
A computer system needs to be serviced regularly to ensure that it runs smoothly and stays in
working order for a long time. Servicing a computer system involves doing maintenance and
repairs. It also entails knowing how to work with computer systems, understanding computer
terminology and electronics,
and following established safety and health standards to avoid accidents with computer systems.
The essential knowledge about how to work on computer systems is covered under the Computer
Systems Servicing or CSS course. It will teach you all you need to know when pursuing a career
servicing computer.
What is Computer System Servicing?
CSS is a course under the Department of Education’s K to 12 program designed to equip aspiring
computer service technicians with the skills and knowledge needed to work with computer
systems. The course aims to develop a set of competencies, which enables technicians order to
carry out tasks effectively. Listed below are the competencies needed in CSS.
Basic Competencies

2. Learn how to perform mensuration to discover how measuring tools work on hardware and
how to do calculations to understand how computers carry out instructions.
3. Apply quality standards when choosing the right materials to be used on computer equipment.
4. Perform basic computer operations.
5. Prepare and understand technical drawings for visualizing processes and finding areas of
improvement.
6. Test electrical components using diagnostic tools.
7. Show how to connect and terminate wiring in electronic circuits
Core Competencies
1. Gain experience in installing and configuring computer systems.
2. Learn how to set up computer networks.
3. Practice proper maintenance and repair on computer systems and networks.
4. Demonstrate how to set up computer servers.
Each lesson will cultivate and test your understanding of these topics and include an introduction
to the subject matter along with self-assessment through activities and reflections
Taking up Computer Systems Servicing will prepare you to become a computer service
technician. Computer technicians usually work in companies or repair shops. You can even
become an entrepreneur and set up your own shop and practice.
Technicians are responsible for the following tasks:
Set up hardware
Install software and configure device drivers
Maintain and repair components
