The Impact of Girl Child Education
Girl child education, you must hear it everywhere now. But, what’s new?
Girls are always looked upon as a subject, as someone who must give up
everything which she had once because, she is getting married. But there is
a power which can’t be stolen or taken away from her under any
circumstances that is, Education. Many times, people neglect the importance
of girl child education because there is always a pre-determined future for
them in the parents’ mind. Even, at some places education is not at all
seemed necessary for girls as, at last they have to get married. This is what
we must change. Every person, be it a girl or boy, they have the right to
decide their own future. Thus, he/she deserves to be educated. It’s such a
basic right which we as humans tend to neglect.
Shaping our own future can be a conundrum. But losing the direction is the
only way to find one. This is why education is necessary as it plays a crucial
role in letting us know the rights and the wrongs, the truth and the lie. It
provides a person with numerous rightful choices and sows a seed of
exploring more. Exploring helps one in finding their interests and do
everything to make it. Ultimately, it helps them to focus and achieve
success. It helps to think critically and develop a perspective towards
different situations that one has to face in life. Thus, education doesn’t only
help with the theoretical knowledge, but also allows a person to gain
practical knowledge. However, there is also another case. Some
underprivileged families who want to educate their children but can’t. When
there is lack of money, education always become backward. To avoid this,
here comes the role of Pehchaan the Street School. It’s not only an
organization but, a feeling which has kept humanity still alive in this
generation. In this, people volunteer or do internships as teachers, mentors,
fundraisers, counsellors, donate, etc. and help in educating these children.
Still, there are some problems faced by such organizations or NGOs like
limited resources, societal barriers to girl child education, lack of access to
quality educational infrastructure, less donations, dropouts due to child
marriage, safety and security concern for girls etc. To address these
challenges, Pehchaan the Street School is partnering with local communities
to mobilize support. For example, in Dilshad Garden metro station area,
Pehchaan the Street School has been running its organization with the help
of nearby Gurudwara. There are 3-4 teams which look after these children.
The Hall of the Gurudwara works as a place where different interns and
volunteers come and teach or donate the needful resources. Also, being a
religious place, it sometimes assures a parent of the security of their
children. Moreover, for the girl child education, they engage with parents and
community leaders to raise awareness about the importance of the same.
The problem is not poverty or being underprivileged but, being not literate.
An educated women can transform the entire world around her. She would
be more aware of the climate change, diseases spreading, illegal industries,
rules and regulation of the country etc. Many women and children who are
not literate are majorly victim of human trafficking or working in gunpowder
industry, etc. which is harmful for them. It affects their lifestyle, environment
and most importantly, their health. Thus, educating them is absolute
necessity because if one is not healthy, how will he/she work? How will they
sustain? This is why organizations like Pehchaan the Street School (by Akash
Tandon) were founded. In 2015, it only had very few children, approximately
10. Noble works like this always prospered and now, it has more than 1500
children. More than an organization, it feels like a family.
It hurts my soul to remember a time when girl child was killed as she is born
because she has always remained unwanted. Even if they sustained, they
were soon materialized. This is what education has the power to transform. It
empowers the girl who has the power to change those traditional norms. It
enables people to put their potentials to optimum use. Moreover, an
educated person will be able to make decision in best possible manner which
is why each and every company prefer an educated person over uneducated
one. In simpler terms, education creates one’s identity in this mysterious
world. She would herself understand the value of education. As I earlier said,
this is what an NGO does. For over 8 years, Pehchaan the Street School is
working for emphasizing the value of education as a fundamental right.
Rather than commodifying education, it tries to make those volunteers and
children understand the aim towards which they are working on and expect
everyone’s unique contribution to it. Pehchaan the Street School’s vision is
“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you
feed him for a lifetime.” This means that rather than giving these
underprivileged children money, we should teach them, educate them and
thus, transforming them into a literate being. But, what can you do?
Today’s generation is very much active on Instagram, Youtube, and other
social media platforms. The easiest task one can do is to SHARE it. We often
talk about spreading awareness about girl child education, so this is the time
to do that because still there are people don’t know much about Pehchaan
the Street School. Or you can VOLUNTEER your time and skills. Or you can
RAISE FUNDS through organizing different programs. Or you can be a mentor
or teacher or an intern who want to use their skill to offer support. Or you
can DONATE. Visit Pehchaan The Street School centers yourself, which are

“Empowering girls is not just a goal; it’s a necessity for a better and more
equal world.”
