Protective Material
L-20288

INTRODUCTION
Properties: L-20288 is a fluorochemical resin concentrate dissolved in ethylacetate designed for
application to leather, textile, porous hard surfaces and the like. Properly applied, L-20288 imparts
excellent and durable water, oil and stain repellent properties to these substrates. The substrate’s natural
characteristics (color, hand, breathability) are generally unaffected by the application of this
product.

Branding: Only if the treatment meets stringent quality performance specifications are you entitled to
make use of the “Scotchgard” brand name provided you are an official licensee of 3M.

Environmental: The active ingredient of L-20288 is not a chlorofuorocarbon (CFC) associated with
ozone depletion, nor does it contain PFOS or PFOA based raw materials. It is not made with and does not
degrade to PFOS or PFOA.

APPLICATION
1) Industrial Spray
It is necessary to dilute L-20288 with solvent prior to use. The choice of solvent, solvent grade or solvent
blend influences the solubility and the oil and water repellency of L-20288. Any proposed formula should
be checked for compatibility, solubility and performance.
Solubility of L 20288 at 1% solids:

Ethers Diethylether OK
Diisopropylether OK
Proglyde DMM OK
Ketones Acetone OK
Methylethylketone OK
Methylisobutylketone OK
Esters Ethylacetate OK
Butylacetate OK
Isopropylacetate OK
Alkanes n-Heptane OK
Exxsol DSP 80-110 OK
Exxsol D30 OK
Isopar L NOK
Alcohols Ethanol NOK
Isopropanol OK
Methoxypropanol OK
Dipropyleneglycolmonomethylether OK

Isopar L / Dipropyleneglycolmonomethylether 90/10 OK

Consult your technical representative for use with other solvents/blends.Any equipment capable of
delivering a wet spray to the surface is satisfactory. Spray equipment must be equipped with local exhaust
ventilation. Apply a uniform wet coat to ensure an even distribution of chemical. Spray two crosses with a
total consumption of approximately 100-120g diluted L-20288 per square meter. Some dyes may be
sensitive to some solvents and a slight color change could result.

Suggested formula (by weight):

40-80g ........................L-20288
960-920g ....................Solvent or solvent blend.
2) Consumer sprays
L-20288 can be used in trigger sprays and aerosols, only when 3M has given formal approval in writing.
This formal approval can only be obtained when all the 3M Risk management criteria are met. For further
