We are Rockhurst
Dear Fellow Dreamers A lifetime should be filled with dreams. How many times when we were children did our loved ones ask, what do you want to be when you grow up? We dream of many wonderful possibilitiesand still do. What are your dreams? At Rockhurst High School, we dare to dream. Men and women inspired by the Ignatian vision are dreamers and doers. They have a passion for an experience of transcendence that breaks through the limits of human existence into the joyful life of the Christian. We rejoice in loving and serving others, inspiring our students to do the same. Their dreams, or in a more business-like interpretation, their goals, become realities because of our benefactors. We should all have goals in life. At Rockhurst High School, our goals of educating leaders for the 21st century are vital to the institutions mission. There is a quote by Napoleon Hill that reads, A goal is a dream with a deadline. We celebrate a spirit of thanksgiving with this Presidents Report to express our gratitude to the many donors who help us to reach our goals and objectives. You make Rockhurst High School strong and proud as a vibrant educational option in Kansas City. The chant at Hawklets athletic events never gets old WE ARE ROCKHURST! Remember, you are a fundamental part of the Rockhurst High School tradition, whether as an alumnus, parent, student, or friend of the institution. Together, we are one. Thank you for sharing the dream of Catholic Jesuit education and making it a reality. Sincerely yours in Christ,

Rockhurst High School serves the greater Kansas City area by educating Ignatian leaders, men for others, in the Roman Catholic, Jesuit college preparatory tradition.
In the spirit of Saint Ignatius Loyola, its goal is the formation of the whole person within a diverse and disciplined environment, as one who is open to growth, strives for academic excellence, is religious, loving and committed to justice through service.

Endowment Campaign
One out of every three students needs tuition assistance to attend Rockhurst High School. The cost of educating each student continues to rise and stands at $11,969 for this year alone. Tuition is $10,650. There are many families who could not enjoy the benefits of Catholic Jesuit education without financial help. These figures will, and should, increase in the future as the leadership of the institution invest in Rockhurst High Schools mission to benefit of the young men entrusted to its care. In 2008, the Board of Trustees of Rockhurst High School launched the FOUNDED ON ROCK Endowment Campaign. The marquee of this drive is inspired by the gospel reading from Matthew 7: 24-25: Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house upon the rock; and the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat upon that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded upon the rock. A threat to the socio-economic diversity of Rockhurst High School is peoples inability to afford the monetary commitment needed for their sons education. A robust investment portfolio of endowment funds, carefully constructed and faithfully kept, will create financial reserves and an economic foundation as suggested in the gospel reading. Friends of Rockhurst High School are joining with the institution like the wise man in Jesus parable to ensure that the schools tradition of excellence remains in perpetuity. The FOUNDED ON ROCK Endowment Campaigns goal is to generate $15 million by 2015 for tuition assistance grants. A majority of tuition assistance today comes from operations, specifically charitable donations to the Annual Appeal (i.e. Magis Fund) and auction. Fortifying the schools financial reserves will provide flexibility in time of need for other worthwhile institutional projects. More endowment funds mean more interest from investments to reduce the strain on the operating budget. By building the schools reserves through income to the campaign, estate giving, and prudent investing, the operating budget can be used to further enhance academic and co-curricular programing; spiritual formation; faculty enrichment, and campus beautification efforts. Twenty-two new family endowment funds have been created through the FOUNDED ON ROCK Endowment Campaign, joined with the funds that were created from years past from generous families who are committed to Rockhurst High School. You can make a lasting impression in the future of Catholic Jesuit education in Kansas City by becoming a partner in the FOUNDED ON ROCK Endowment Campaign. AMDG

1.Open to Growth Emotionally, intellectually, physically, socially, religiously to a level that reflects some intentional responsibility for ones own growth, as opposed to a passive, drifting, laissezfaire attitude about growth.
2.Intellectually Competent Will exhibit a mastery of those academic requirements for advanced forms of education. 3. Religious Will have a basic knowledge of the major doctrines and practices of the Catholic Church. The graduate will also have examined his own religious feelings and beliefs with a view to choosing a fundamental orientation toward God and establishing a relationship with a religious tradition and/or community. What is said here, respectful of the conscience and religious background of the individual, applies to the nonCatholic graduate of a Jesuit high school. The level of theological understanding of the Jesuit high school graduate will naturally be limited by the students level of religious and human development. 4. Loving Will be well on the way to establishing his own identity. The graduate is also on the threshold of being able to move beyond selfinterest or self centeredness in relationships with significant others.
Ignatius grew to understand that the educational apostolate is a most effective means to promote the growth of the Kingdom of God. Jesuit schools must go beyond the criteria of academic excellence, important as that is, to the far more challenging task of bringing about the true metanoia (radical conversion and change of heart) in students. These institutions must move more vigorously toward participation in community affairs, honestly evaluating efforts according to the criteria of both Christian reform of social structures and renewal of the Church in the spirit of the Second Vatican Council (Vatican II). If the faculty of a Jesuit school are men and women whose lives are inspired by the Ignatian vision, then the question about the percentage of Jesuits on the faculty will not be an overriding concern. The school will be Jesuit or Ignatian if the lives of the teachers exemplify and communicate to the students the vision of Ignatius. Ignatius designed his Spiritual Exercises to effect fundamental changes in a persons life, to achieve a profound and far-reaching metanoia. The concepts and images, the underlying religious values and motivations, if translated into educational practices, can lead students beyond the goal of academic excellence. A central idea is freedom, also called Ignatian indifference or detachment. This demanding process strips away false and worldly values that hinder the ability to respond to the call of Christ the King. Teachers have the daily opportunity to encourage passionate and responsible commitment to social justice (implementing Jesus own vision of the Kingdom of God) while educating students in all manner of academic achievement.
5. Committed to Doing Justice Will achieve considerable knowledge of the many needs of local and wider communities and is preparing for the day when he will take a place in these communities.

The reason my family supports Rockhurst High School is very simple: They are developing tomorrows leaders in an environment that fosters servant leadership based on a Catholic Christian foundation. We need leaders like this today, and even more so in the future. Im excited that Rockhurst is providing those leaders to Kansas City and the world.

I owe a great debt to Rockhurst High School and the Jesuits for my high school formation; the blend of academic, spiritual and athletic encouragement provided the foundation for a good life. So many people do not have a good start in life. As alums, we are probably all called to give back in ways that amplify that opportunity for others in our community.

Rockhurst High School excels at creating Christians and it changed my life. We must all seek Christ in everything and know that the blessings we have are gifts. Undesignated Gifts
Annual Appeal (the Magis Fund) Every October, Rockhurst High School launches its campaign to support the Magis Fund. Appeals for tuition assistance given to families and fortify operations for teacher salaries; curricular and co-curricular activities; and campus beautification. Memorial Gifts and Honorariums Donations made in memory or honor of an individual(s) are considered undesignated gifts and used for the immediate needs of Rockhurst High School.
firm called FAIR (Financial Aid Independent Review) based on financial information provided by each family. The donors preferences with regard to awards from endowment funds are always a consideration. Endowed Scholarships Endowed gifts by benefactors are invested for longterm growth, with only interest awarded. A $50,000 principal balance is needed for a fund to make grants; however, most funds begin with a minimal balance and grow in strength over time. Matching Gifts Companies match or multiply employees giving. Spouses and retirees also can participate in a matching gift program by designating their gifts to Rockhurst High School. Credit for these matching gifts accrues to the individual donor. Stock Gifts Donor give securities or land. The advantage of a stock gift is it enables donors to avoid capital gains on the appreciation in market value of the shares.
Bequests Bequests are made through a written and executed will, can specify a dollar amount, percentage or portion of the donors estate, or items of property. Bequests reduce the size of donors taxable estate, thus enabling heirs to pay less in taxes. Benefactors may specify that a bequest be used for scholarships, buildings, or endowment. Charitable Gift Annuity A charitable gift annuity is a contract between the donor and charity by which the donor transfers property (cash, securities, real estate) to the charity in exchange for a fixed dollar payment during the donors lifetime. It enables a donor to receive guaranteed income that is partially tax-free and avoid capital gains tax on appreciated property and removes the donated property from the donors federal and probate estate. Charitable Remainder Trust A charitable remainder trust is a legal arrangement between a donor and a trustee of the donors choice that allows the donor to transfer property to the do-
nors selected charity and to receive income from the property or to create income for another person. The donor also receives a partial income tax deduction in the year of the gift. A charitable remainder trust enables a donor to reduce or avoid capital gains taxes on appreciated property. Charitable Lead Trusts A charitable lead trust provides a donor with income for a specific number of years while reducing gift and estate taxes on the assets passed on to family members. This vehicle of giving enables a donor to provide pre-determined payouts to a charity for a defined period of time. Once the term expires, the assets revert to the donor or the donors family. U.S. Charitable Gift Trust This pooled income fund offers the benefits of a charitable gift trust without the expense. Funds are pooled with individual investor sub-accounts. A mutual fund company, which manages the funds in one of three
investment strategies, operates the trust. An investor can choose among a high yield, income, or a growth and income field. A minimum investment is required and additional incremental investments may be made. Immediate tax deductions apply, which become greater with increasing age. Since a mutual fund company manages the trust, charges are minimal. Life Insurance A gift of life insurance is a vehicle that allows a donor to pass on or part of his or her estate with minimum cost, maximum benefit, and often, an estate tax advantage. A donor is able to claim a charitable deduction for approximately the policys cash surrender value, and the proceeds are removed from his or her estate. Real Estate Gifts of real estate include a principal residence, vacation home, farm, commercial property, and land. A donor will receive an income tax deduction as well as a reduction or elimination of a capital gains tax.
Designated Gifts
Benefactors may direct the use of a contribution for a specific purpose. Endowment Gifts The Rockhurst High School Financial Aid Committee directs tuition assistance. Awards are need-based and made with the counsel of an independent third party
