No matter if you have not yet started your business or if you are

already operating, you could reveal hidden potential by

investing some time into analysing your existing activities along
the value chain and the raw materials you use.

When designing a product, you should consider:

1. Materials and resources

2. Production process

3. Packaging and distribution

4. Use and maintenance

5. End-of-Life management

When eco-designing your product, you identify which type of

components, materials and resources you are going to use and
where they are coming from. The consumption of raw material
bears great opportunities to reduce costs. When it comes to the
production process, you should analyse each stage with regards
to options for eco-improvements, including the related
consumption of energy, water and waste.
Use the World Business Council
for Sustainable Development (WBCSD)’s seven success factors
for eco-efficiency, to optimise your product or service design:

 reduce the material intensity of goods and services,

 reduce the energy intensity of goods and services,

 reduce toxic dispersion,

 enhance material recyclability,

 maximise sustainable use of renewable resources,

 reduce material durability and

 increase the service intensity of goods and services

(WBCSD, 1992).

Making money while saving the planet sounds tempting, but -

especially for existing businesses – enhancing your eco-
efficiency may imply initial investments, ranging from a
thorough analysis to identify the best strategies and methods for
realising efficiency to buying machinery and training staff.
Making the commitment to go green is an important step in protecting the
environment, but the question is where do you start?

Here are some simple tips for living a more environmentally conscious life.

5 Things you should know to
become green or environmentally
friendly
It turns out we can all be more environmentally friendly without giving up
parts of our lifestyle which we consider essential to our sense of self. Very
often small and incremental changes are all that is needed.

#1 Educate yourself and others on our

environmental footprint
For example, when we casually throw a plastic bottle into the bin, we don’t
necessarily consider the resources that it took us to produce it in the first
place and that recycling it can be much better.

#2 Commit to making small but important

changes to your lifestyle
While this seems like a small change, it can really make a difference. It is
also the kind of change that matters the most because it is about
behavioral change which is critical to making progress as a society.

#3 Make informed consumer choices

Being green means ensuring that the products you buy and use are
sustainable. This means that they come from sustainably sourced
resources and where possible renewable or from recycled products.

#4 Be open to how the environment can provide

fulfilling activities
We often forget how versatile our environment is and how building a
relationship with nature can help us find mental balance but also physical
wellbeing.

#5 Volunteer or donate
We may be able to spare a few hours a month or a year to help collect
litter from a nearby beach, support the activities of a local environmental
charity or make a small donation to help them continue their good work.
