Definition :

• Anthropology is the study of the origin and


development of human societies and cultures.
• Anthropology is the scientific study of humanity,
concerned with human behavior, human biology,
cultures, societies, and linguistics, in both the present
and past, including past human species.

Anthropology is the systematic study of
humanity, with the goal of understanding our
evolutionary origins, our distinctiveness as a
species, and the great diversity in our forms of
social existence across the world and through
time

Meaning of Anthropology

• The word “ Anthropology” derives from two


Greek words, “ anthrope” meaning, Man, and “
logy” meaning, Science
• Literally means a science of man.
Anthropology has four main branches.

• Cultural anthropology is the study of how


people live — in the present and the recent
past.
• Linguistic anthropology is the study of
language within the context of anthropology.
• Archaeology is the study of past people
through the things they left behind.
• Biological anthropology is the study of how
humans have evolved and differences within
the species.

What is anthropological importance?

• Anthropology is the comprehensive study of

human development, culture, and change


throughout the world, past and present.

Anthropology can also help us imagine and

design futures that attend to human and

environmental complexity.

• It helps us gain insights into the diversity of

human experiences, beliefs, and practices

across different societies and time periods.

Anthropology also contributes to our

understanding of human evolution, social

structures, and the impact of cultural

practices on individuals and communities. It

plays a crucial role in promoting cross-cultural

understanding, addressing social issues, and

informing policies related to human rights and

diversity.
The scope of
Anthropology

• Anthropology can be defined as the study of


humankind in
all time and places.
• Broader in scope than other disciplines.
• Every part of the world containing human
populations is of interest to anthropological
study.
• Includes studying other primates to look for
clues our ancestral origins
