1 INTRODUCTION

The student industrial work experience scheme (SIWES) is a part of a

program within any academic field of study in every institution design by

the national board of technical education (NBTE), which aim at impacting

on students a sound practical knowledge of what the learn from school

theoretically.

The program aimed at training students in their academic field, and the

student while taken the exercise are being monitored by internal and external

supervisor to make sure that the students adhered to the term they are there

for.

The aim of Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) training

programmed is to expose students to the practical aspect of technology in

industries/organizations. It also exposed students to be acquainted in

machines, administrative role and other relevant ideas that are related to area

of specialization. In essence, it teaches students the use of tools and

equipment available.

1.2 HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF THE ORGANIZATION

Prof. Suleman Elias Bogoro Ultra-Modern Library Complex, Plateau State

Polytechnic, Barkin Ladi is located at the North central of Nigeria in Plateau

along the Barkin Ladi, Mangu road Heipang. It was first establish in the year

1978 by Joseph Dechi Gomwalk under the military government and was

later commissioned by Prof. Suleman Elias Bogoro on the 10 of June, 2022

The library has a large vacuum of space which can contain 5,000 (Five

Thousand Library Users) at a time.

1.3 AIM AND OBJECTIVE OF THE ORGANIZATION

i) Interlibrary loan

ii) Assist the library users get their required information

iii) Borrow books to users

iv) Preserve information for research

v) Provide student with the opportunity to apply their theoretical

knowledge in real work experience.

vi) To encourage capacity building for effective management.

1.5 ACHIEVEMENT, PROBLEMS AND PROSPECT OF THE ORGANIZATION

 Achievements of the Organization

Works Department Plateau State Polytechnic, Barkin Ladi was created; there

are series of great achievements through so many ways.

i) Students have achieved so much because the organization trained students

very well in practical aspect of the field department.

ii) The organization has train students and prepares them for employment.

iii) The students are also trained to be self-employed.

 Problems of the Organization


The following are the problems of the organization.

i) Inadequate equipment and materials and it affect students in terms of

practical.

ii)Erratic (poor) power supply and it also affect students during practical.

iii) Lack of enough staffs and it affect the organization because the little staffs

don't usually have time to rest.

 Prospects of the Organization


i) The organizations are trying to provide adequate materials for students to

make sure the impact knowledge to the students.

ii) The organization are providing educated staffs to make sure the create value

to the students.

CHAPTER TWO

2.1 DETAILS OF ATTACHMENT

Attachment is integrating link between theory and practical and is seen as a

major promoter of skills development with the aims of preparing student for

quick absorption into industry and commerce and also involvement in the

National Diploma process.

I started my industrial training on the 5 th December, 2022 with Prof.

Suleman ELIAS Bogoro Ultra-modern Library Complex, Plateau State

Polytechnic, Barkin Lad. I was told to be punctual, dedicated and to go to

work 8:00am to 4:00pm from Monday to Friday.

Also, I was given the basic rules and regulations of the library which are;

i) Briefcase, bags and walking sticks, gadgets e.t.c shall not be taken into the

library.

ii) The use of mobile phones in the library is strictly prohibited all phones

should therefore be switched off before you enter the library.

iii) Absolute silence should be maintained at all times in the library.

2.2 DEPARTMENT ATTACHED TO

During my Three (3) months Industrial Training (I.T) I was attached to

Cataloguing and Classification Department.

2.3 NATURE OF WORK

i) Shelf Reading: Is the proper arrangement of books on their shelf

according to their classes and cutter numbers.

ii) Circulation: This is the circulation section in the library where most of

the activities in the library takes place. The first activity that takes place

in the circulation section every morning is the stamping of magazine and

shelf reading.

The activities done in the circulation section include;

 Charging and discharging of library users

 Interlibrary loans

 Assisting the users get materials on the shelf

 Registration of cards.

The staffs in the circulation section monitor the activities of the users in

case of theft and mutilation of library materials. There are two types of

shelf in the circulation section which are;

The Opening Shelf: Is a shelf that is open to the users and materials

(books) on the open shelf can be borrowed.

The Reserved Shelf: Is a special shelf that users take some measures

before getting access to the books on it.

iii) Serial and References: The serial and references section is a section or

department in the library that has to do with the arrangement of

periodicals such as newspapers, magazine, e.t.c

The activities done in the serial section and reference include;

 Indexing of magazine and news papers

 Stamping of journals/encyclopedia

 Arrangement of newspapers according to their month and date.

iv) Cataloguing and Classification: Cataloguing and classification also

called the engine room of the library. The materials that are mostly use in

the cataloguing and classification section include; pencil, shedle, subject

heading, cutter book, catalogue card e.t.c.

2.4 RELEVANCE OF ASSIGNMENT TO STUDENTS

The Students Industrial Works Experience Scheme (SIWES) is very relevant

to me as a student, as it enable me to know the practical aspect of what I was

theoretically thought in class.

2.5 EXPERIENCE GAINED DURING THE ATTACHMENT

The following are the experience I gained during my period of attachment;

i) I learned shelf reading

ii) How to arrange journals

iii) I know more on the function of the circulation section

iv) I learned to do cataloguing and classification

v) I also learned how to accession books into the accession register

2.5 PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED DURING THE ATTACHMENT

The problems encountered during my period of Industrial work are;

i) Lack of proper attention by staff of the organization as most of them are

busy to attend to us.

ii) Lack of transportation to the organization

iii) Lack of feeding (food) during work in the organization.

CHAPTER THREE

3.1 RECOMMENDATION

The Student Industrial Training Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) from

my own view is a very important scheme and has a high advantage to all the

student, I wish to comment (good job) to all who sat initiated the

programmed and I am saying thank you very much. I also recommend that

student should be stipend for the stipulated period so as to enable them

tackle the issue of transportation and feeding.

3.2 CONCLUSION

I really appreciate the SIWES program and no matter how students’ find it

difficult, students should put their best wherever they found themselves on

SIWES to see and make sure that they achieved their aims and purpose of

being there, so that it will help in their future life. Because I have achieved a

lot in theory and practical on my field of studies with some other field.
