Grade 4-Earth Mrs. Elisa C. Regalado
Effects of Force on Objects
Explain the effects of force when applied to an object.

Learning Task 1:
Try to get a piece of clay, then shape it to any figure. What made you able to shape the clay into your
desired figure? What did you exert? Yes, you exerted a force. Get a piece of paper. Crumple it. What
happened to the paper? What made you do it?

Force is either a push or a pull on an object. Magnets, gravity and friction can also cause things to move. Force can also
change the shape, size or movement of an object. You are able to exert force because of energy. Energy is the ability to do work.
Both living and non-living things need energy to do work.

Learning Task 2: Complete the table by performing the activity carefully.

What you need:
sponge, rubber ball, foil paper, bottle cap, clay/play dough, egg shell, hammer, rolling pin

What to do:
1. Observe each of the solid materials given in column A.
2. Change the shape of materials found in column A by applying force on it.
3. Fill-out column B with what you did to change the shape of the materials.
4. Fill out column C with changes that took place after you have applied force on the materials.

Guide Questions:
1. Look at your answers in column B. What are the common ways you did to change the shape of the
objects? For each way, what did you use?

I use __________________________.

2. There are also other ways to change the shape of objects. What do you think will happen to an object if
you will: a.) pound b.) bent c.)stretch d.) crumpled or e.) press

3. From your answers in the questions above, what do you think can force do to objects?

______________________________________________________________________

 The shape of an object may change when force is applied on it. Pushing, pounding,
compressing, bending, twisting, stretching or squeezing are some ways of
changing the shape of an object.

Learning Task 3: Perform the activity carefully. Be sure not to harm/hurt yourself and others in doing so.
Objective: Describe the effects of force on the size of an object.

What you need:

Copper wire, plastic bottle, cardboard, eggshell, bar soap, styro foam, hammer, scissors, rolling pin,
popsicle stick, winnowing basket.

What to do:
1. Get the winnowing basket then put the materials in it except for the pair of scissors, hammer, rolling pin
and popsicle stick.
2. Think of what you can do to change the size of each of the materials. Perform it.
3. Record the actions that you have done and their effects on the materials in the table.
4. Return all the materials inside the winnowing basket and clean the working area after finishing the
activity.
5. Be ready to present your data.

Guide Questions:
1. How would you describe the size of the materials before force was applied on them?

 When force is applied to an object, the size of an object may change. Some
situations where force is applied and changed the size are dropping a flower vase
and pounding Styrofoam cup.

Learning Task 4: Read the questions carefully then answer correctly.
