Manufacturing Shopfloor activities are generally dull & monotonous. How can we make it more
interesting for the employees? Imagine yourself standing in front of a lathe, operating it, loading and
unloading the components for 8 hours a day. So, by default, the employees will feel disengaged & Low
on Morale.

In an office environment / IT company, where majority of them are knowledge workers and the work
may not be a routine / repetitive activity (my guess), so people are a little more engaged / motivated.

But in a typical manufacturing setup, where there is a lot of noise, heavy machinery, oil spillage and
forklifts moving in the shopfloor, how can we engage the operators in a meaningful way and motivate
them?

This is a challenge I am working on. Currently reading a book by Yu-Kai Chou called “Actionable
Gamification”. It gives a lot of insights on creating a human-centric design to keep the audience
hooked to a game / social media app.

I am trying to apply these ideas for a manufacturing shopfloor and have explained 5 ideas here. You
can try these points too and let me know your thoughts.

1. Show them the Big Purpose

2. Certificates & Trophies
3. Stars, Badges and Caps
4. Give Responsibility & Ownership
5. Contests & Prizes for Creativity

Explained these in the attached PDF. Feel Free to download it.

(These ideas are not exhaustive)

Which of these ideas you want to try in your unit? Want to share an idea which you are following
already? Please share in the Comments.

Leading shopfloor change through gamification! A unique idea, no doubt. But it leaves a few
questions in my mind..
1. Are we trivializing a serious activity like manufacturing by reducing it to the level of a
game?
2. Are workers so juvenile that only a gaming environment can get them to follow process?
3. Will a shopfloor process game also lead to game addiction ..will it be the prior step to
playing PubG in the factory?

These are questions for which I don't have answers. Raising them here for initiating a
discussion.
