1989 TRANSMISSION SERVICING


Automatic Transmission Removal

Cabriolet, Golf, GTI, Jetta, Jetta GLI, Vanagon

NOTE: For manual transmission/transaxle replacement procedures,


see CLUTCH article in the CLUTCHES section.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION - EXCEPT VANAGON

REMOVAL

1) Disconnect battery ground cable. Disconnect speedometer


cable from transaxle. Raise and support vehicle. Remove left front
wheel.
2) Support engine from above. Remove left rear transaxle
mount and support. Remove upper transaxle-to-engine bolts. Remove
upper bolts in front engine/transaxle mount.
3) Remove lower bolts on front mount and remove mount. Remove
protective plate from transaxle. Remove torque converter-to-drive
plate bolts.
4) Disconnect accelerator and selector cables from transaxle.
After placing mating marks on flanges, remove left and right axle
shaft flange bolts. Tie axle shafts to the body.

NOTE: If clearance is needed to remove transaxle, separate ball


joint from left side steering knuckle and move axle shaft
away from transaxle.

5) Remove left rear engine mount. Remove starter. Remove


subframe mounting bolts and allow subframe to hang free. Support
transaxle with jack. Remove lower mounting bolt. Lower transaxle.

INSTALLATION

To install, reverse removal procedure. Adjust accelerator and


selector cables. Refer to the TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table at the end
of this article.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION - VANAGON

REMOVAL

1) Disconnect battery ground cable. Remove upper engine-to-


transaxle bolts. Remove dipstick and bolt for dipstick tube support
bracket.
2) Remove 3 torque converter-to-drive plate bolts through
hole in top of transaxle housing. Raise and support vehicle.
3) Disconnect both axle shafts from transaxle. Remove

starter. Disconnect push rod from transaxle kickdown lever; Detach


accelerator cable from transaxle. Detach selector lever cable from
transaxle.
4) Disconnect and clamp coolant lines from transaxle cooler.
Disconnect ground strap. Remove mounting bracket bolts. Support
transaxle with jack.

NOTE: Bottom of engine must be supported when removing transaxle.

5) Remove lower transaxle-to-engine bolts. Separate engine


from transaxle and remove engine.

INSTALLATION

To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure torque


converter is fully seated on one-way clutch support. Distance from
engine mating surface to end of converter hub should be at least 3/8"
(10 mm).Adjust accelerator and selector cables. Refer to the
TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table at the end of this paragraph.
