All About UGC NET
The National Eligibility Test Agency for the benefit of the
(NET), otherwise called UGC University Grants Commission
NET or NTA-UGC-NET, is the (UGC). Till July 2018, the Central
assessment for deciding the Board of Secondary Education
qualification for the post of (CBSE) led the UGC NET test,
Assistant Professor and addition- which the NTA has been directing

(JRF) in Indian Colleges and the test is done twice a year in
Universities. The assessment is the months of June & December

Why UGC NET?

Besides being eligible for the post of Assistant Professor after

qualifying for this examination, candidates who are planning to
go for a PhD are also exempted from entrance tests for PhD
admissions (some universities are exceptions).

It also gives weightage to NET- JRF qualified candidates in the

admission process. If you qualify for JRF, you will also be provided
with a research fellowship while pursuing a PhD.

Opportunities after qualifying for JRF:
After qualifying for NET-JRF and enrolling in a PhD, the candidate is awarded a
five-year fellowship. For the first two years, the fellowship of Rs. 31000/- + HRA
per month (depends on different institutes), and for the next three years, the
fellowship of Rs 35000/- + HRA per month (depends on different institutes) is
provided. The fellowship offered by private universities and IIMs varies
depending on their respective program policies. Qualifying JRF offers dual
benefits, i.e. stipend like a regular job and a doctorate degree.

NET (Lectureship):
Candidates who qualify for Assistant Professor through UGC NET can choose
to pursue a career in the teaching field. The UGC NET exam makes the
candidate eligible for the post of Assistant Professor. They can explore the

Professor with their valid scorecard. Candidates can expect lucrative pay in the
range of Rs. 25,000/- to 40,000/- per month in the starting phase based on

UGC NET
Exam Eligibility Criteria
1. Candidates who have secured at least 55% marks (without rounding off)
in Masters Degree OR equivalent examination from universities/institutions
recognised by UGC are eligible for this Test. The Other Backward Classes
(OBC) belonging to Non-Creamy Layer / Scheduled Caste (SC) / Scheduled
Tribe (ST) / Persons with disability (PWD) category candidates who have
secured at least 50% marks (without rounding off) in Masters degree or
equivalent examination are eligible for this Test.

2. Candidates who have appeared OR will be appearing at the qualifying

Master's degree (final year) examination and whose result is still awaited
may also apply for this Test.

3. Candidates are advised to appear in the subject of their post-graduation

only. The candidates whose post-graduation subject is not covered in the
list of subjects specified by the exam conducting body may appear in a
related subject.

4. The PhD degree holders whose Masters level examination had been
completed by 19th September 1991 (irrespective of the date of declaration
of result) shall be eligible for a relaxation of 5% in aggregate marks (i.e.,
from 55% to 50%) for appearing in NET.

5. JRF (Age Limit): Not more than 30 years as of 01.06.2023. There are a few
relaxations as well.

6. Assistant Professor: There is no upper age limit for candidates to apply for
UGC NET (Assistant Professor).

How to Maximise Your
Score in UGC NET Paper-I?
Paper-I of UGC NET is a common test different sections, and all carry an equal
