ALPHABET OF

MECHANICAL
LINES
Alphabet of Mechanical Lines
This is a set of lines that becomes an
integral part of the working drawing.
The lines have different forms, tones
and constructions resulting to
different uses and meaning in the
work.
BORDER LINE
This is an extra-heavy or black line
that is used to envelope a working
drawing. It is made solid throughout
its desire length.
OBJECT LINE
Thisis a thick line that
represents the outline of the
design of the object.
SHORT BREAK LINE

This is a solid thick line that equivalent

to an object line that is drawn in
freehand. It shows a break in a specific
part of the object
LONG BREAK (Limit) LINE

 Thisline indicates that the structure had been cut

for being too big for the paper used, and the
object is symmetrical in all parts of the design.
This is drawn in a straight thin form with a
freehand zigzag.
INVISIBLE (Hidden or Dashed) LINE

This line represents the hidden

intersection of the plane. This is a
medium broken line that is equally
spaced within its equal short dashes.
DIMENSION LINE

This line gives the size of a given

space. This is a thin broken line with
an arrowhead at both ends and a
break at the center for the insertion
of a figure.
EXTENSION (Witness) LINE

This line controls the dimension

line. It is drawn perpendicular to
the dimension line and to the
surface dimensioned. This is a thin
solid that is used to witness the
space dimensioned.
CENTER LINE

This indicates the axis of solids, or the

center of a circular feature. This is
drawn in a thin broken form consisting
of a short dash (1/8”) sandwiched
between two long dashes. This is also
called Axis Line.
PHANTOM LINE

This line represents the movement

of adjustable parts.
CUTTING PLANE LINE
This is a heavy line that shows the
direction of the cut in sectioning an
object. It often comes in form of two 1/8
“short dashes between two long dashes,
ending in arrowheads at its end.
SECTION (Crosshatching) LINE

This line shows the kind of material

used in the object. This is given in a
thin solid form, evenly spaced at 45ْ.
CONSTRUCTION (Layout) LINE]

This is used in laying-out the

outline of the object at its
development stage and in the
construction of parts. This is a
very thin solid line.
PROJECTION LINE
This line shows the relation between
parts or views of the object. This is
made in a very thin form like a
construction line.
For Example:

1. Visible
2. Hidden
3. Center
