Attention: Mr. K. Naidoo

Dear Sir,

RE: PREPARATION OF BOND COAT SPECIFICATION FOR PAVING TRIAL

1. PURPOSE

The purpose of this correspondence is specify the bond coat requirements for the paving trial on NME’s
section on the N3 Sections 2 and 3, from Lynnfield Park (N3/2 – Km 30.600) to Ashburton Interchange
(N3/2 – Km 0.800).

2. BOND COAT PRODUCTS TO BE TESTED

The following bond coat products have been identified to undergo testing during the paving trial:
• Product A – Elastotack from TOSAS
• Product B – Colbond from COLAS
• Product C – Suprabond T from TOSAS.

The product descriptions are summarised below:

• Product A – Cationic rapid setting 65% bitumen emulsion containing SBR latex, with a 50/70
base binder.
• Product B – Medium viscosity, cationic, spray grade bitumen emulsion modified with SBR latex,
with a 50/70 base binder.
• Product C – Cationic modified emulsion with organo-silanes and SBR latex, with a 50/70 base
binder.

The application rates for the products are as listed below.

Product Application rate (l/m2)
Elastotack 0.45
Colbond 0.4 – 0.6
Suprabond T 0.5 – 0.7

The product specification sheets for further details can be found in Annexure 1.

3. PAVING TRIAL GUIDELINES

As per the product specification sheets, the following temperature guidelines for the products should be
followed:
• Elastotack (Product A) – a temperature range of 50°C to 70°C is specified. It is preferred to be
sprayed at 60°C to ensure better flow properties without damaging the product at elevated
temperatures. The product is applied through a spray bar positioned on the paver. If this product
is stored on site, it must be circulated weekly for at least one hour, to keep the emsulsion well
suspended. The use of a centrifugal pump is recommended for circulating. The product should
be heated before use to reduce blocked nozzles.
• Colbond (Product B) – a binder spray temperature of 65°C is specified, and a minimum road
surface temperature of 10°C. To avoid blocked nozzles, it is recommended that the product be
loaded via a strainer fitted with a fly screen mesh. If possible, larger nozzles should be fitted to
the spray bar to reduce the frequency of blockages.
• Suprabond T (Product C) – this product can be applied at 50°C to 60°C, or at ambient
temperature with hand spray work. If the product is heated or diluted, it may start to coagulate
and it is advised to only heat or dilute product needed to be sprayed on the day.

4. CONSTRUCTION CONSIDERATIONS

Following the application of the bond coat, and the overlying layer, traffic should not be allowed onto
the surface for 24 hours, allowing the bond coat at the interface to stabilise with temperature reduction.
This will allow the bond coat to function under loading well within its softening point.

As part of the design system, it should be noted that the tinning of a concrete base course is not required
if an asphalt wearing course is to be paved over it. This is critical to note as the preparation of the
concrete surface must be free of tinning and should be texture treated by means of sand blasting or
scabbling in order to improve adhesion before a bond coat is applied, in order to ensure the best bonding
with the overlying asphalt layer.

It was noted, from Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP), that the existing concrete sections
became carbonated over time which can also cause loss in adhesion properties. Thus, the “freshness”
of the concrete is important as well as the texture. To remedy this, any older concrete surface, which
has been open to traffic prior to the final surfacing, should be texture treated.

With regards to surface drainage, the longitudinal joint between concrete v-drains and the surfacing
should be well sealed.

5. CONCLUSION

The product specifications have been appended to this letter and should any queries arise, you may
contact us or the supplier directly.

Yours faithfully,

COLBOND N™
Elastomer Modified Bitumen Emulsion

Product Data Sheet 2020/07

DESCRIPTION
COLBOND N™ is a medium viscosity cationic spray grade bitumen emulsion modified with SBR latex and special additives to
warrant enhanced bond strength properties with substrate.

USES
COLBOND N™ is used mainly for spraying as a bond coat when using integrated paver/spraying machines.

PROPERTIES
COLBOND N™ has enhanced residual binder properties, while the lower viscosity of the emulsion improves the flow of the
binder during application. COLBOND N™ is specially formulated with the use of no cutter to ensure that there is no solvent
entrapment in the overlaid surface, thus reducing the risk of bleeding. COLBOND N™ has great affinity for various substrates
and has excellent bond properties.

SPECIFICATIONS
COLBOND N™ conforms to the following specification:

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

1. Only heat product prior to application. Heating should be gentle to reduce the possibility of deposits forming on the
burner flues. Do not heat the product during storage, but circulate for approximately 20-30 minutes every second day.
2. COLBOND N™ can be applied with a conventional distributor, integrated paver/sprayer or hand sprayer at a binder
spray temperature of 65°C and a minimum road surface temperature of 10°C.

3. Typical application rates are 0,4 – 0,6 l/m2.

4. To avoid blocked nozzles, load the product via a strainer fitted with a fly screen mesh. If possible, larger nozzles
should be fitted to the spray bar to reduce the frequency of blockages.
5. Can be stored for long periods at ambient temperature without risk of polymer thermal degradation. The residue
on sieving value will increase with prolonged storage, but should not affect performance of the binder.
6. Clean storage tank and spray bar regularly with solvent to dissolve latex residues.

9) Application temperatures This product can be applied with ambient temperature with hand
spray work or 50-60°C, to ensure better flow properties without
damaging the product at elevated temperatures.
If the product is diluted 50:50 and sprayed as a fog seal or tack
coat, a minimum of 1 - 4 hours drying time is required depending
on ambient temperature and coalecance phase. If heated or
diluted the product may start to coagulate and it is advised to only
heat or dilute product needed to be sprayed on the day.
10) Uses Suprabond T: used for integrated tack pavers, fog spray
applications, concrete tack coats, and has trackless properties.
11) Cleaning and handling Refer to Safety data sheets:

Suprabond T creates a superior bond between the existing surface and the ultra-thin friction
course (UTFC), concrete bond coats, or fog seals. The shearing force acting on the interface
between the substrate and asphalt overlay is much higher than those experienced with
thicker asphalt layers, therefore the emulsion is modified with an SBR polymer, and organo
silane to improve the residual binder properties, bond strength, and adhesion at the
interface. The elastomer also enhances the adhesion of the new thin layer to the existing
substrate under extreme traffic action. Suprabond T, once dry, will have minimal pickup due
to trackless properties. The binder will appear to be less tacky than conventional tack coat’s
and pickup of the binder will be reduced to a minimum if applied correctly.
