Dear HRWEN81 student,

1. Assessment Plan
Take note of the change in the assessment plan. The following will be the assessments
for the Research Project: Water Engineering module (HRWEN81) in 2024:

In addition, there will be oral presentations of your proposals from the 5th to the 7th of
August 2024. The presentation schedules will be sent out closer to the dates.

2. Research Topic and Supervisor(s) allocation


Each student should have selected or been allocated a research topic and a supervisor.
If that is not the case with you, urgently contact the module leader Prof Onyari-Benecha.

3. Proposal Writing
You will work with your supervisor(s) to develop a proposal that should have the
following sections:
1) Title
2) Background/rationale
3) Problem Statement
4) Objectives
5) Research Questions
6) Preliminary Literature Survey/Review
7) Research Methods/Methodology/Experimental Methods
8) Gantt chart of timelines
9) Budget
10) Patent/Innovation declaration
11) Research Ethics
12) References
A study guide is uploaded on the module site and a template you must use while
developing your proposal. The marking rubric is also provided to ensure you are fully
aware of what is expected of you.
The deadline of 29 July is firm as the presentations will be scheduled from the 5th of
August 2024.

4. Conference paper or Journal paper


Research is done with the intention to share the new knowledge worldwide, and thus
your supervisor will work with you and assist you in identifying the right conference or
journal in which you will publish your work.

5. Final Research Dissertation


Your final dissertation will include all the laboratory experiments and/or numerical
simulations results. Ensure to work with your supervisor(s) to produce a good
dissertation. Your Final report should have the following sections:

8) Results & Discussion

6. Graduate Attributes Assessment

The following Graduate attributes will be assessed in your proposal and the dissertation.
What is expected out of each GA is indicated in the description below:

The student will identify, formulate, analyse and solve complex problems creatively and

The student will demonstrate competence to conduct investigations of complex
problems including engagement with the research literature and use of research
methods including design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data and
synthesis of information to provide valid conclusions.

The student will demonstrate competence to communicate effectively, both orally and in
writing, with engineering audiences and the community at large.

The student will demonstrate competence to engage in independent and life-long
