Extended Reading 1 (9 Questions / 15 Minutes)
Originally, the ancient Olympic Games were held in
Olympia, Greece, from the 8th century BC to the 4th
century AD. However, Baron Pierre de Coubertin founded
the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1894 and
initiated the modern Olympic Games, the Olympiads. The
first modern Olympic Games took place in Athens in 1896
with 280 participants from 13 nations, in 43 events.
As the decision-making body, the IOC is responsible for choosing the host city for each
Olympic Games. The host city is responsible for organizing and funding a celebration
of the Games. The Olympic program, consisting of the sports to be contested at the
Games, is also determined by the IOC. The celebration of the Games encompasses
many rituals and symbols, such as the Olympic flag and torch, as well as the opening
and closing ceremonies.
The evolution of the Olympic Movement during the 20th and 21st centuries has
resulted in several changes to the Olympic Games. Some of these adjustments
include the creation of the Winter Games for ice and winter sports, the Paralympic
Games for athletes with a physical disability, and the Youth Olympic Games for
teenage athletes. The IOC has had to adapt to the varying economic, political, and
technological realities of the 20th century.
At each event of the games, media exposure provides unknown athletes with the
chance to attain national, and in some cases, international fame. The Games also
constitute a major opportunity for the host city and country to showcase themselves to
the world.
18
The 2020 Games will mark the second time that Japan — and specifically Tokyo —
has hosted the Summer Olympic Games, the first being in 1964, making it the first city
in Asia to host the Summer Olympics twice. Overall, these will be the fourth Olympic
Games to be held in Japan, which also hosted the Winter Olympics in 1972 (Sapporo)
and 1998 (Nagano).

Extended Reading 3 (8 Questions / 15 Minutes)
The Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks that use the
standard Internet protocol suite, a set of communications protocols, to serve billions
of users worldwide. The internet has reshaped and redefined most traditional
communications media including telephone, music, film, and television. This has given
birth to new services. Newspaper, book and other print publishing are adapting to Web
site technology or are reshaped into blogging and web feeds.
The Internet has enabled or accelerated new forms of human interactions through
instant messaging, Internet forums, and social networking. Online shopping has
boomed both for major retail outlets and small artisans and traders. Business-to-
business and financial services on the Internet affect supply chains across entire
industries.
The origins of the Internet reach back to research of the 1960s, commissioned by the
United States government in collaboration with private commercial interests to build
robust, fault-tolerant, and distributed computer networks. The commercialization of
what was by the 1990s an international network resulted in its popularization and
incorporation into virtually every aspect of modern human life. As of 2011, more than
2.1 billion people — nearly a third of Earth's population — use the services of the
Internet.
The person who is considered to be the inventor of the Internet is Sir Timothy John
Berners-Lee, an English computer scientist who is a Professor Fellow of Computer
Science at the University of Oxford and a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology (MIT). Berners-Lee proposed an information management system on 12th
March 1989, then implemented the first successful communication between a client
and a server via the Internet in mid-November of the same year.
In 2004, Berners-Lee was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his pioneering work. In
April 2009, he was elected a Foreign Associate of the National Academy of Sciences.
He was named in Time magazine's list of the 100 Most Important People of the 20th
century and has received a number of other accolades for his invention. He was
honoured as the "Inventor of the World Wide Web" during the 2012 Summer Olympics
25
opening ceremony in which he appeared working with a vintage NeXT Computer at
the London Olympic Stadium.

Single Question Reading (1 Question)
Steve Jobs
Steven Paul Jobs was an American inventor, designer and entrepreneur who was the
co-founder, chief executive, and chairman of Apple Computer. Apple's revolutionary
products, which include the iPod, iPhone, and iPad, are now seen as dictating the
evolution of modern technology.
Born in 1955 to two University of Wisconsin graduate students, Jobs was smart but
directionless, dropping out of college and experimenting with different pursuits before
co-founding Apple with Steve Wozniak in 1976. Jobs left the company in 1985,
launching Pixar Animation Studios, then returned to Apple more than a decade later.
