What is It

This lesson will discuss the preparations of cut parts in accordance with the
specified garment design or style and accessories prepared in accordance with
garment design or style.

KEY POINTS in PREPARING CUT PARTS

1. Use both hands to anchor work flat on the table.

2. Separate the big units with the small units.

4
3. Place the cloth parts flat on the table.
4. Label the units to avoid confusion when sewing.
5. To get easily the garment parts to be sewed first, place it at the right side
of the sewing machine table.

Garment construction is not difficult if the cut parts are well-prepared and
primed correctly.

Remember to prepare your garment parts before you proceed to

sewing. In order to not to consume so much time finding your garment part,
place it near to you, place it under the extension leaf of your sewing machine.
Complete also your tools in sewing like scissor or trimmer, thread, seam
ripper.

One method used today in sewing is the unit method of construction.

It makes sewing easier because of the systematic procedure used in the
construction.

What do we mean by unit method of construction?

Is the system of sewing a garment part by part or unit by unit.

A unit is a separate part of a garment. When the cloth is cut, each portion
becomes a unit.

The collar is one unit. So are the following: front blouse, black blouse, sleeves.

The unit method of construction has the following advantages:

1. Each part of a garments is sew completely before it is attached to the other

parts.

5
2. Every piece that you are going to sew is not handled too much so that the
cloth does not become too wrinkled.
3. The needed marks in constructing the blouse are carefully checked.
4. The time consumed in sewing will be shorter.

Pre-assembling procedure

1. Sew/finish the raw edges.

Note: If there is an edging machine available, you can do the over edge
seam.
2. Sew the Darts. Fold the fabric on the wrong side on the centre line of the
dart. Mark stitching line with pins. Stitch darts starting from the wide
portion up to the pointed end. Tie or back stitch to seam the threads.
3. Joining the shoulder seams. The neck and the armhole edges should be
matched at the seam line. After pinning the edges, ease the back seam to
the front seam. Sew on the seam line and finish edge with the appropriate
seam finish.
4. Join the Side Seam. Pin the side or underarm seams together. Be sure to
match seam allowances of the front and back blouses. Check to see that
the front and back blouses are joined together and not the two front or two
back parts.
5. Prepare sew and attached the sleeves. In a set-in sleeve, the cap fullness is
eased into the armhole of the garment. The sleeve may be long, short, or
three-quarter length and finished with or without a cuff.
6. Prepare sew and attached the collar.
7. Sew the hemline
8. Make hand worked buttonholes
9. Attach the buttons
10. Apply finishing touches

Sewing and Assembling Garment Parts:

When the garment is cut, its piece is a unit, as work progresses two or more
pieces are combined to form a new unit.

This is called unit method of construction. It is an organize way of

assembling a garment.

There are four units in bodice pattern:

1. Front
2. Back
3. Sleeves
4. Collar
How does a garment form or combine?

1. Complete all markings

2. Stay stitching

6
3. Construction of darts
4. Finishing plackets
Advantages of Unit Method of Construction:

1. It takes less time to construct the garment.

2. Parts of the garment which go together can be easily found because it kept
together in unit.
3. Each section of the garment is handled less.
4. Transferred marks may be checked carefully and sewing may be completed
on each piece as the pattern is removed.
5. Short period of time may be used by working on a simple unit.

Preparing Parts for Sewing:

Each cut piece of material needs to be prepared carefully. You start

with the smaller details of a garment to be sewn. The suggested preparations
below can be applied in your project.

For Pocket – pocket is a finish pouch in a garment used to carry small items
only.

For Flap – flap serves as cover for pouch pocket, usually applied with
appropriate fastener like button. It is a piece of fabric with variety of shapes
to adapt depending on what is desired by client.
