Identify for each case, whether the dipole is in stable or unstable


equilibrium. Justify each answer.

(b) Next, the dipole is kept in a similar way (as shown), near an infinitely long
straight wire having uniform negative linear charge density.

Will the dipole be in equilibrium at these two positions? Justify your answer.

17. (a) State Gauss law in electrostatics. Show that with the help of a suitable figure
that the outward flux due to a point charge Q in vacuum within a gaussian
surface is independent of its size and shape.

(b) In the figure, there are three infinite long thin sheets having surface charge 5
dentities +2σ, -2σ and +σ respectively. Give the magnitude and direction of
electric field at a point to the left of sheet of charge density +2σ and to the
right of sheet of charge density +σ

18. (a) Using Gauss law, derive expression for intensity of electric field at any
point near the infinitely long straight uniformly charged wire.
(b) The electric field compoenents in the following figure are E x = x, Ey = 0,
Ez = 0; in which = 400 N/Cm. Calculate (i) the electric flux through the
cube (ii) the charge within the cube. Assume that a = 0.1m
