KING KULASHEKHARA

Narration.: Long long ago, there was a king in Orissa named Kulashekhara. He
was a very powerful king. He was very strict in administration. He was a
charitable person and took good care of his citizens as though they were his
own children. One day when the King was listening to hari katha with all the
sadhu’s and sanyasis who visited is kingdom when the King’s guru entered.

{Guru enters. King bows down }

King: Please accept my humble obeisances , O Gurudev.

Guru : Please sit down, O king. Listening to hari katha is very good Shravanam is
“The beginning of Krishna consciousness and devotional service is hearing, in
Sanskrit called shravanam. All people should be given the chance to come and
join devotional parties, so that they may hear.

Srnvatam sva-kathäm krsna punya-sravana keertana. Anyone who takes part in

this process of hearing and chanting, he becomes pious, purified.

{Fly comes and disturbs the king. King chases it away with hand. Some dust from
his forehead falls down. Guru lowers his head.}

King: My dear Gurudev, What is the cause of your apparent sadness.

Guru: When one offers prostrated obeisance’s to his guru, he is immediately

freed from reaction of his sinful activity for as many past lives as there are
particles on his forehead. And now you have removed these particles from your
forehead by touching your forehead. I feel sorry for you, because you have
deprived yourself of being free from your sins for that many lives.

{King trembles and faints. Guru leaves}

King: I have commited a great offence at the lotus feet of my Guru. Please read
the scriptures and tell me the atonement for this offence.

{All are busy reading scriptures and looking sadly at king}

King: why are you not telling me what atonement I have to do. Please tell me. I
must do it however difficult it may be.
Brahmanas: O King the atonement for this is very severe.

Brahmana2: O King to get freed from this sin one must take a copper plate 12 ft
long, 3 ft wide and 6 inches thick. He should heat this plate by putting it on the
top of 4 pillars and heating by charcoal underneath. Once it is as hot as fire , one
should offer his prostrated obeisances 108 times. This is the verdict of
scriptures.

{King looks very happy}

King: Now I will be free from my offences. Please make all the arrangements for
this.

Everyone in court room : O King, you cannot do this. If you leave your body,
who will take care of us. We will be deprived of our master. (CRYING)

King: Who is the real master? Do not forget. Jagannath is the master of
everyone. Do not be concerned of my death. One who has taken birth has to
die. I do not fear death. I do not want punishment from Yamaraj for being
offensive to my guru. Whether I die or survive by doing this does not matter. To
me. The Lord knows everything. He will do whatever is good for me. Please
chant the holy name of Hari. That will help me.

{King goes to the plate}

King: O Lord. You are the root of everything. I am taking shelter of your abhay
charan. You are vancha- kalpa taru, wish fulfilling tree. There is no one like you
in this universe who can finish the suffering of the living entities. O lord please
protect me from this fire. I need to free myself from this offence to my Guru. So
I will enter into the fire. But whether I die or survive is entirely upto you.

Hare Krishna

He offers obeisance.

Everyone assembled. : Hare Krishna Hare Krishna…

Naration : Lord Jagannath who is the cause of everything, knew about the
situation of His surrendered devotee and became merciful upon the King. The
fire became cooling like water by the mercy of Lord. The Kings burning body
immediately cooled.

Jagannath: {takes King by hand} Now you will be glorified all over the universe.
Never before and never in future will there be any one as piousas you. You are
free from all your sins. You have achieved “Param – gati”.

King: Who are you? I didn’t recognize you.

Lord: Then see my real form. (4 handed form of Lord)

Narration : The King was so fortunate to see the Lord. Due to illusory energy of
the Lord, those present couldn’t see the Lord now His blessing upon the Lord.

Everyone: Jagannath Bhagavan ki Jai! King Kulashekhara ki Jai.
