Pharmacological Properties:
Bactericidal action
Broad spectrum of activity
Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis
Well-absorbed after oral administration
Similar activity to penicillin and ampicillin
FDA-approved since 1974
INDICATIONS:
Treats susceptible bacterial infections of:
Ear, nose, throat Combined with clavulanic acid for:
Genitourinary tract Acute bacterial sinusitis
Skin, skin structure Community-acquired pneumonia
Lower respiratory tract Acute bacterial otitis media
Urinary tract infections
CONTRAINDICATIONS:
Hypersensitivity or history of severe allergic
reactions to amoxicillin or other beta-lactams
Suspected or confirmed infectious mononucleosis
Liver Disease
Kidney Disease
History of Gastrointestinal Disease
History of Bleeding Disorders
SIDE EFFECTS:
Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea may occur.
Prolonged use may lead to oral thrush or vaginal yeast infection.
Serious side effects may include signs of liver disease or easy
bruising/bleeding.
Rarely, it can cause a severe intestinal condition called
C. difficile infection.
Mild rash is common but monitor for signs of a severe
allergic reaction
INTERACTIONS:
Methotrexate: could potentially altering the effectiveness or
safety of either medication.
Oral Anticoagulants: May cause abnormal prolongation of
prothrombin time (INR); monitor closely.
Allopurinol: Increases risk of rashes when used with amoxicillin.
Probenecid: Reduces renal tubular secretion of amoxicillin,
leading to increased and prolonged blood levels.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION:
Adult Dosage:
750 to 1750 mg/day
Divided doses every 12 hours : @12mn, 12nn
Pediatric Dosage (Over 3 Months):
20 to 45 mg/kg/day
Divided doses every 8 hours: @12mn, 8am, 4pm
Neonates and Infants (3 Months or Younger):
Maximum dose: 30 mg/kg/day
Divided doses every 12 hours: @12mn, 12nn
NURSING CONSIDERATIONS INTERVENTIONS
BEFORE ADMINISTRATION:
Follow the 10 rights of drug administration to ensure safe patient care.
Assess the patient’s vital signs prior to administration.
Assess allergy history before treatment.
Periodically monitor renal, hepatic, and hematologic functions.
Monitor electrolyte balance.
Monitor for signs of anaphylaxis, skin rash, and antibiotic-associated diarrhea.
Instruct the patient about the possible side effects and report immediately.
NURSING CONSIDERATIONS INTERVENTIONS
AFTER ADMINISTRATION:
Monitor for therapeutic effectiveness: response to the medication.
Monitor for Adverse Reactions such as rash, itching, swelling, or difficulty
breathing.
Evaluate for Superinfection such as oral thrush or vaginal yeast infection.
Emphasize the importance of finishing the prescribed course of
amoxicillin, even if symptoms improve.
Encourage patients to report any new or worsening symptoms promptly.
