COMMON SPORTS INJURIES

Strain

 Are by far the most common of all sports‒related injuries simply because we use so many
muscles and tendons when we exercise or play.
 Common muscle strains include pulled hamstrings, pulled groin, strains quads.
 Most strains are mirror and heal muscles and the best way to reduce the risk of strained muscles
naturally with rest, warm up and stretch before engaging in strenuous activity.

Sprain

 When ligaments are turn in a wrong way, they can pull or tear causing sprains.
 Sprains can be painful, take longer to heal than strains.
 Ankle sprains are perhaps the most frequent type of sprain among athletes, followed closely by
knees sprain, wrist and elbow sprains, etc.
 Sprains often leave the ligament weak and susceptible to future sprains.

Fracture

 A partial or complete break in the bone

 Impact and contact sports often lead to fracture of the bone (mostly arms and legs)
 Can be painful and it takes weeks of immobilization to heal and may sometimes require surgery
to correct.

Dislocation

 Is an injury in which the ends of your bones are forced from their normal position to deform and
immobilize the joint.
 The cause is usually trauma resulting from a fall, an auto accident, or a collision during contact
or high‒ speed sports.
 Usually involves the body's larger joints.

Concussion

 Occurs when a sudden impact to the head causes the brain to lurch inside the skull, sometimes
damaging the tissues holding it in a place.
 Concussion may be mild to severe, with symptoms ranging from headache and dizziness to
sleepiness and temporary loss of consciousness.
 The best way to reduce the risk of concussion is to wear an appropriate protective head gear
when playing contact sports like hockey or football, or when biking or skateboarding, etc.
Stress fracture

 Is a fatigue induced bone fracture caused by repeated stress over time, instead of resulting from
a single severe impact, stress fractures are the result of accumulated injury from repeated sub-
maximal loading, such as running or jumping.

Tendinopathy or Tendinitis

 Is a type of tendon disorder that results in pain, swelling, and impaired function.
 Caused by repetitive movements, overuse of a muscle-tendon unit, or sudden injury.
 Activities like sports, gardening, or typing can lead to tendinitis if done excessively or
improperly.

Osteoarthritis

 Is the most common form of arthritis.

 It is a chronic degenerative joint disease that affects mostly middle-age and older adults.
 Causes the breakdown of the joint cartilage.
 Factors such as genetics, obesity, joint injuries, and repetitive stress on joints can also contribute
to the development of osteoarthritis.

Bursitis

 is inflammation of a bursa (a closed, fluid-filled sac that works as a cushion and gliding surface to
reduce friction between tissues of the body.)
 can occur due to overuse, trauma, infection, underlying conditions, or age-related changes.
 Overuse, injury, or infection can irritate the bursa, leading to bursitis.
