King Bastard Band Story
The first day of university orientation, we all went to Stony Brook University on Long Island, NY, Mike wore this
Sleep shirt, pure coincidence. He was just walking around doing all the freshman bullshit, miserable. Arthur walks
by like, “Yo dude! That’s a sick shirt!”
Mike thought he was being fucked with
“Shut the fuck up, name a song”
“Dopesmoker”
Eventually we got together to jam and learn covers before realizing — we needed a drummer. We whipped up a
fantastic flyer featuring a baby behind a drum kit with a poorly Photoshopped Sleep logo on the kick, along with
contact information and pictures of bands we like. We inevitably stumbled upon the man known as Spencer Flash
who had been playing drums for a mere six months at that point. Learning Black Sabbath covers quickly turned
into full on improvisation as we tried to work around Flash’s odd playing style. This in turn was what gave birth to
our sound, a fusion of traditional doom riffs with experimental psychedelic jams.
As Flash’s tenure with the then-unnamed King Bastard came to an end, Arthur realized that he actually knew a
drummer the entire time. Thus, he called upon his former pet store coworker, Matt Ryan, who had been playing
drums for 14 years at that point and won several drumming competitions.
We eventually became much more focused and driven to find our sound. After a run of demo tapes including
“Have You Seen This Man?” and “Live at the Haunted Barn,” we took to Menegroth, the Thousand Caves in
Queens, NY to record our debut studio record,”It Came from the Void,” with the legendary Colin Marston. It was
Mike’s uncle Darren, drummer of the esteemed Long Island sludge metal band Unearthly Trance, who pointed us
in the direction of the Krallice commandeer. After that we started overdubbing guitar solos and all that extra
seasoning at Mike’s place, totally DIY, an ethos which persists to this day.
