3 How to study this unit

3.1 Equal Plans

Students are responsible for uploading university equal plans, via the appropriate LMS link, at the start of the teaching
period.

3.2 Approach to learning

3.2.1 Learning approach underpinning unit

This unit requires students to master fundamental concepts that are essential to their future
success in their academic endeavours. This will require students to engage in repetition of
material and activities to ensure mastery.

3.2.2 Flipped Classroom

This unit uses a flipped class approach to learning and teaching. This means that the ‘lecture’ and Tutorial material is
presented in a digital format, and it is expected that students will review this material independently, prior to coming
to workshops. Workshop time will be spent doing problem based or applied activities. This provides students with the
opportunity to practice the application of material while in a supportive environment.

3.2.3 Unit changes in response to student feedback

The Unit is being continually improved and any student feedback is very welcome.

3.3 Learning activities & requirements

3.3.1 Overall expectations

You are expected to take responsibility for your own learning during this unit. That means ensuring that you complete
the pre-tutorial learning activities prior to attending your tutorial. You are expected to be active participants during the
lectures and tutorials. You help to drive the content of these lectures and tutorials, so come armed with your
questions.

3.3.2 Learning activities and details

In this unit, you will be expected to engage in the following learning activities:

 Lectures – Lectures are presented online via LMS workbooks (approximately one hour per teaching week)
 Private study – This includes completing assigned readings and note taking (approximately 7 hours per week)
 Workshop preparation – You are expected to prepare for workshops prior to attending (approximately one

5.3 Academic integrity

Murdoch University expects students and staff to pursue the highest standards of integrity in all academic activity.
Academic integrity involves behaving ethically and honestly in scholarship and relies on respect for others’ ideas
through proper acknowledgement and referencing of publications.
Academic misconduct is treated seriously and penalties may apply.
More information about academic integrity can be found at https://goto.murdoch.edu.au/learningstudy. To help you
learn about academic integrity practices, all students are required to complete the Murdoch Academic Passport
(MAP100). Please also note the library citation guide.
Murdoch University makes use of content matching software to detect submitted work that is not original. When you
submit an assessment to myMurdoch Learning, it is checked by this software. Your Unit Coordinator may apply other
processes to verify that your submitted assessment is your own work.
In this unit, we undertake these practices to assure academic integrity:

 Ouriginal content matching software

ALL ASSESSMENTS must be written in the student’s own words.

5.4 Online Quiz and Exam Deferrals

Online Quiz
An online test/quiz cannot be extended only deferred.

Criminological Research Methods Page 12 of 18

 If you are unwell or there are some extenuating circumstances such that you need to defer
the assessment on that basis, you need to notify the unit coordinator as soon as possible using the
appropriate link on LMS and request a deferral with appropriate medical or other evidence. An online
test is not the same as an assignment and extensions to complete the assessment cannot be provided.
As the assessment is open for 7 days your medical certificate needs to cover the entire period the test is
open. A medical certificate stating you were unwell before the test or for part of the period the test is
open cannot be the basis for a deferral.
 If you have an EQAL plan which states you need extra time to complete mid-term or online
tests –please provide this to your unit coordinator and they will make appropriate accommodation. It is
your responsibility to provide this to the unit coordinator as early in the semester as possible.

Online EXAM
If you are unwell you can apply for a deferred examination with the Exams office. Apart from exceptional
circumstances, you must apply BEFORE or at the latest 3 business days after the assessment date of the exam. If you
are unwell during the exam (after commencing), contact the Exams office immediately for advice as to what to do. A
deferred exam in those circumstances is not guaranteed.
Students can find details and the form here:
https://www.murdoch.edu.au/mymurdoch/support-advice/student-admin/exams/deferred-assessments
The Exams office decides whether to approve your application according to the University’s policy. The important
thing is to contact the Exams Office as soon as possible (there are strict time limits) and collect supporting
documentation immediately.

5.5 Extensions and late submissions

Students are required to submit assessment items on the due date so that marking can occur with feedback provided
in a timely manner to support future learning.
Assessment work submitted after the due date without an approved extension of time will ordinarily attract a penalty
(see below). Where special circumstances exist, an extension of time may be granted for submission of an
assessment item without penalty.

In this unit, extensions and late submissions follow these requirements:

 Requests for an extension must be received, via the appropriate LMS link, at least 48 hours prior to the due
date/time.
 Requests received less than 48 hours prior to the due date/time will only be considered in exceptional
circumstances.
 Requests for an extension received more than 3 days after the due date/time WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED.
 Assessments submitted more than ten calendar days after the due date/time, without a valid extension,
WILL NOT BE MARKED AND WILL BE AWARDED A GRADE OF ZERO.
 Late assessments will attract a late penalty of 10% of the maximum possible mark for each calendar day
(or part thereof).
 Failure to submit your assessment correctly, including uploading the wrong document, will RESULT IN A
GRADE OF ZERO.
 Late penalties will be applied after a 24-hour grace period.

Penalty example:
Essay submitted three days after the due date, without a valid extension, will attract the following
penalty:
Maximum possible grade = 40 marks; 10% of 40 = 4 marks;
3 days x 4 marks = 12 marks deducted from final essay grade

Criminological Research Methods Page 13 of 18

This unit follows Murdoch policies and procedures with regards to extensions and late submissions, supplementary
and deferred assessment.
Students who feel that their disability, medical condition or disability caring responsibilities may impact on their
capacity meet assessment submission are strongly advised to visit Access and Inclusion as early as possible to
discuss potential needs and assistance.

5.6 Word limit penalties

Students must ensure that their written work is within the published word limit. The following penalty will be applied for
work that exceeds the published word limit:

 Excessive word limit penalties will be applied once an assessment exceeds the published word limit by 10%
 Once word limit penalties are applied, they will be calculated at 10% of the maximum possible marks per 10%
over the published word limit.

Penalty example:
Essay submitted 300 words over the published word limit, will attract the following penalty:
Maximum possible grade = 40 marks; 10% of 40 = 4 marks;
Published word limit = 2,000; 300 words = 15% over published word limit
1.5 x 4 marks = 6 marks deducted from final essay grade

5.7 Extensions, deferrals and late submissions - COVID related

We understand that COVID-19 will spread within the Perth/Peel community. We understand that this may impact
upon students in a number of ways:
 Students may contract COVID-19 and be required to isolate
 Students may be in close contact with a person who has COVID-19 and be required to test and isolate
 Students may have caring responsibilities for a family member that has COVID - 19
If the positive test or requirement to isolate is expected to impact on your studies and ability to submit assessments by
the due date please contact your unit coordinator as soon as possible; a quick email will suffice. Documentation will
not always be required as we understand this may not be possible or certain. The unit coordinator may contact you in
future for further/additional documentation relating to this application.

5.7.1 Online Tests

An online test cannot be extended only deferred.

Please notify your unit coordinator before the assessment commences if you need to defer your exam/test on the
basis of being unwell due to contracting COVID-19 or having caring responsibilities for a family member that has
COVID-19

5.7.2 Exams

For exams held during the University exams period, if you are unwell due to COVID-19 you can apply for a deferred
examination with the Exams office. You must apply BEFORE or at the latest within 3 business days of the exam.
Find details and the form here:
https://www.murdoch.edu.au/mymurdoch/support-advice/student-admin/exams/deferred-assessments

Criminological Research Methods Page 14 of 18

5.7.3 Assignment extensions COVID-19

If you are unwell due to COVID-19 please advise your unit coordinator. An extension of up to 14 days may be
granted. If you cannot submit within that time period you will have to defer the assessment and you will have to
complete a different assessment at a later date to be discussed with your unit coordinator.
If you have an EQAL plan which allows extra time already and you require more time due to COVID-19 please discuss
this with your unit coordinator.

5.8 Determination of the final grade

Your final grade for this unit will be a simple addition of all completed and graded assessments.

Refer to Reporting of Results in the Assessment Policy for information about marks and grades.
