This unit requires students to master fundamental concepts that are essential to their future
success in their academic endeavours. This will require students to engage in repetition of
material and activities to ensure mastery.
This unit uses a flipped class approach to learning and teaching. This means that the ‘lecture’ and Tutorial material is
presented in a digital format, and it is expected that students will review this material independently, prior to coming
to workshops. Workshop time will be spent doing problem based or applied activities. This provides students with the
opportunity to practice the application of material while in a supportive environment.
The Unit is being continually improved and any student feedback is very welcome.
You are expected to take responsibility for your own learning during this unit. That means ensuring that you complete
the pre-tutorial learning activities prior to attending your tutorial. You are expected to be active participants during the
lectures and tutorials. You help to drive the content of these lectures and tutorials, so come armed with your
questions.
In this unit, you will be expected to engage in the following learning activities:
Lectures – Lectures are presented online via LMS workbooks (approximately one hour per teaching week)
Private study – This includes completing assigned readings and note taking (approximately 7 hours per week)
Workshop preparation – You are expected to prepare for workshops prior to attending (approximately one
hour per teaching week)
Workshops – You are required to attend and actively participate in weekly workshops (one hour per
teaching week)
Revision of material – It is suggested that you review the material in this unit at the end of each week.

Online Quiz
An online test/quiz cannot be extended only deferred.
Online EXAM
If you are unwell you can apply for a deferred examination with the Exams office. Apart from exceptional
circumstances, you must apply BEFORE or at the latest 3 business days after the assessment date of the exam. If you
are unwell during the exam (after commencing), contact the Exams office immediately for advice as to what to do. A
deferred exam in those circumstances is not guaranteed.
Students can find details and the form here:
https://www.murdoch.edu.au/mymurdoch/support-advice/student-admin/exams/deferred-assessments
The Exams office decides whether to approve your application according to the University’s policy. The important
thing is to contact the Exams Office as soon as possible (there are strict time limits) and collect supporting
documentation immediately.
Requests for an extension must be received, via the appropriate LMS link, at least 48 hours prior to the due
date/time.
Requests received less than 48 hours prior to the due date/time will only be considered in exceptional
circumstances.
Requests for an extension received more than 3 days after the due date/time WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED.
Assessments submitted more than ten calendar days after the due date/time, without a valid extension,
WILL NOT BE MARKED AND WILL BE AWARDED A GRADE OF ZERO.
Late assessments will attract a late penalty of 10% of the maximum possible mark for each calendar day
(or part thereof).
Failure to submit your assessment correctly, including uploading the wrong document, will RESULT IN A
GRADE OF ZERO.
Late penalties will be applied after a 24-hour grace period.
Penalty example:
Essay submitted three days after the due date, without a valid extension, will attract the following
penalty:
Maximum possible grade = 40 marks; 10% of 40 = 4 marks;
3 days x 4 marks = 12 marks deducted from final essay grade
Excessive word limit penalties will be applied once an assessment exceeds the published word limit by 10%
Once word limit penalties are applied, they will be calculated at 10% of the maximum possible marks per 10%
over the published word limit.
Penalty example:
Essay submitted 300 words over the published word limit, will attract the following penalty:
Maximum possible grade = 40 marks; 10% of 40 = 4 marks;
Published word limit = 2,000; 300 words = 15% over published word limit
1.5 x 4 marks = 6 marks deducted from final essay grade
