Forensic Accounting

Forensic accountants are involved in the prevention, detection and investigation of commercial
crimes (such as fraud, corruption and money laundering). Forensic accountants require skills and
knowledge in accounting, criminal- and civil law, investigations and IT. Investigations can include
regulatory investigations (money laundering and bribery), criminal and civil investigations, as well
as strategies to prevent and detect commercial crimes such as fraud risk assessments and
forensic data analytics. This degree is unique in South Africa and is accredited by the Institute of
Commercial Forensic Practitioners, the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants and the
Chartered Institute of Management Accountants [certain terms apply in terms of SAICA and
CIMA].

Typical tasks include:

● Obtain and review financial documents to identify inaccuracies or fraud


● Analyse financial data and trace discrepancies
● Quantify revenue losses and damages from contract breaches
● Conduct and implement fraud risk management programmes
● Conduct interviews with suspects and witnesses
● Provide litigation support and present findings to be used as trial evidence

● Accountancy, Auditing, Tax and supportive modules on the level of Chartered


Accountancy;
● Law modules (e.g. Criminal Law, Law of Criminal and Civil Procedure, Law of Evidence,
Labour Law);
● Forensic investigative modules

BCom Forensic Accountancy

General Accounting
Our BCom Accounting degree is for those students interested in obtaining a general commerce
degree with a major in Accounting, Management Accounting and Taxation.

Typical tasks include:

● Measure and process financial information and report to relevant entities


● Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements
● Prepare forecasting costs and revenues
● Perform tax calculations for reporting purposes
● Perform business management activities

Chartered Accounting

This is one of the University’s flagship programmes, which is accredited with the South African
Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA). South African Chartered Accountants (CAs(SA)) are
leaders in business and in high demand, both locally and internationally.

Typical tasks include:

● Audit accounts and express your opinion on the fairness of financial statements
● Advise clients on taxation matters
● Advise clients about business matters, such as profit improvement, investment
strategies, risk management, estate planning, etc.
● Be your own boss by establishing and managing your business of choice
● Lecture at a university or provide training to the accountancy profession

Financial Accounting
This professionally-accredited programme is designed to equip students with knowledge and
skills to become professional accountants in public practice and business. Financial accounting
is a specialised branch of accounting that keeps track of a company’s financial transactions.
Students are taught how to use standardised guidelines to record, summarise and present
transactions in a financial report/statement, such as the statement of financial position/statement
of profit/loss and other comprehensive income.
