Do you know how the elements of art is being applied in musical plays and theatre
performances? If not, let’s get started! Let me introduce to you the elements of art. The
elements of art are Line, Shape, Space, Color, Texture, Form and Value.
Line is a path by moving a point mark or object. In theatre or musical performance,
lines can be observed anywhere, from where the characters move to a pattern from one
place to another and other stage movements.
Shape is a two-dimensional (2D), flat enclosed area. When a Line crosses over itself,
it creates a shape. If you have seen some stage performances of Les Miserables’ One Day
More, you can observe that the actors are positioned at a Triangular shape formation at the
end to show Solidarity and Power. Watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?

Space is the element of art that refers to the emptiness or the area around or within
objects. Space in theatre, musical and other stage performances determines how the stage
would look like. From a big empty stage into creating a realistic setting or fairytale like
setting. Maximizing the space of a stage play is a challenge, it needs a very careful
planning. The props and he characters should be placed properly.
Color is the element of art derived from reflected or absorbed light. Colors give an
impression of a certain mood for a specific scene or theme of a stage performances.
Red is used to denote passion, danger or power. Pink signifies innocence, femininity
and beauty. Yellow is associated with joy, naivety and insanity. The Blue light observed on
Miss Saigon’s “This is the hour” and “I’d give my life for you” accompanies the sorrowful,
grief and sadness of the scene. The Red light in the song “This Is The Hour” was an
expression of anger of the Vietnam soldiers when they was shot dead by Kim. It was also
an expression of a different kind of courage, something strong and desperate.
Texture can give either a realistic or an artificial impression on the play production.
Like how the character’s open wounds appear to be very realistic and ow other details of
the stage appears to be rough, smooth, soft or hard, considering most if it are digitally
created and projected.
Form are objects having three dimensions, height, width and depth. Form is a crucial
part of the production, making the props more realistic. For example, the Helicopter used in
Miss Saigon and the Barricade in Les Miserables.
Value is an element of art that refers to the lightness or darkness of an artwork or
object. In theatre and musical performance, this gives the viewers an implied perception of
1
depth and distance, making the stage look as if it is bigger than usual. For example, in Les
Miserables and Miss Saigon, you will find props of houses, and village backdrops, the
objects that are near are lighter in color, unlike the backdrops behind it are in dark color
making it appear to be far in distance. But sometimes it differs depending on the scene if it
is day time, or night time. There is value as well in color scheming of characters. The Lead
roles always appear to be brighter than the non-leading roles for emphasis.

During the pandemic, the musical “Ang Huling El Bimbo” was aired live on YouTube
gaining millions of views. musical “Ang Huling El Bimbo”is a song from the ‘80s by Elli Buendia.
The musical was set in the ‘80s, retro outfits such as: over size T-shirts, suspenders, high
waisted trousers and tuck-ins were used. There are also noticeable vintage ‘80s retro stuffs
used in the musical such as paraluman’s poster retro (model car, the bright colored textiles, the
stripes and polka dots pattern. The settings were more of school urban.
In 19th century France, Les Misérables follows the life of Jean Valjean – an ex-
convict who seeks redemption despite being hunted for decades by his rival and ex-guard
Javert after breaking parole. Les Misérables presents us a high-level theatrical production,
with an excellent direction, unbelievable set design with a great display of atmospheres,
magnificent costumes, impressive make-up, as well as a great sound.
Victor Hugo’s novel Les Miserables used description for two reasons. First, Hugo
wished to bring the reader’s attention to every aspect of the character and second, the
dress descriptions mirrored society’s stereotypes, which Hugo reflected in his work. For
example, sitting demurely, cosset exemplifies a lady refinement. Her clothes accentuate the
image. White gloves of purity and the black dress sobriety.
During the World War II bombings of London, four English siblings are sent to a country
house where they will be safe. One day Lucy finds a wardrobe that transports her to a magical
world called Narnia. After coming back, she soon returns to Narnia with her brothers, Peter and
Edmund, and her sister, Susan. Narnia is unique because of the characters are symbolic. They
represent biblical parallels for example: The four Pevensie children parallel the four apostles of
Jesus, close confidants called by him to help carry out his mission. Throughout "The Chronicles
of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe," the children are referred to as the sons of
Adam and the daughters of Eve. Edmund, the younger of the two Pevensie brothers, is the
Judas, or fallen-man figure; he has sold out his siblings in exchange for the promise of unlimited
Turkish Delight, his favorite candy. Sisters Susan and Lucy are presented as the Mary
Magdalene and Mary the Mother of James figures, who watched as Jesus was mocked and
abused and who care for his battered corpse after death.
Aslan the lion represents Jesus. Called the King of the Wood, the son of the Emperor-
Over-the-Sea offers his life to save Edmund the traitor. Aslan is mocked, beaten and killed, only
to rise again. The stone table represents the long heavy curtain hanging in the temple -
separating the holy place and the most holy place - which rips when Jesus dies. The stone table
breaks in half after Aslan is killed.
