DIAGNOSE WITH UTI
UTI
A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection
that affects the urinary system. The urinary
system works to remove waste and extra
water from the body. It includes the kidneys,
two ureters, the bladder, and the urethra.

Women are at greater risk of developing a

UTI than are men. If an infection is limited to
the bladder, it can be painful and annoying.
But serious health problems can result if a UTI
spreads to the kidneys.
SIGNS & SYMPTOMS

A BURNING FEELING OR PAIN WHEN YOU PEE

A FREQUENT OR INTENSE URGE TO PEE, EVEN

THOUGH LITTLE COMES OUT WHEN YOU DO.

CLOUDY, DARK, BLOODY, OR STRANGE-

SMELLING PEE.

PAIN OR PRESSURE IN YOUR LOWER BELLY,

BACK, OR ABDOMEN

FEVER, CHILLS, NAUSEA, OR FATIGUE

CONFUSION OR AGITATION IN OLDER PEOPLE.

DISEASE
The culprit is usually bacteria, most commonly E. coli,
Invasion residing in the gut. This bacteria makes its way to the
periurethral area, around the opening of the urethra.

PROCESS Colonization
The bacteria latch onto the urethral opening through
appendages like pili that help them stick. This initial
colonization sets the stage for further ascent.
Throughout this process,
the body tries to fight

bacteria. This can cause
the various signs and
symptoms we associate Bladder Infection If the bacteria establish themselves in the bladder, it

most common UTI type.

In some cases, the bacteria continue their journey up the

Medication Management

Treatment
Antibiotics usually are the first treatment for urinary tract
infections. Your health and the type of bacteria found in your
urine determine which medicine is used and how long you need
to take it.

Simple infection

Medicines commonly used for simple UTIs include:

Trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim, Bactrim DS)
Fosfomycin (Monurol)
Nitrofurantoin (Macrodantin, Macrobid, Furadantin)
Cephalexin
Ceftriaxone
Co-amoxiclav
Acute pain related to infection within the

kidneys) as evidenced by verbal reports of
pain, facial grimacing, or guarding behavior.

Nursing 2
Impaired urine elimination related to
inflammation and irritation of the urinary tract

Diagnosis
as evidenced by frequency, urgency,
hesitancy, or dysuria (painful urination).

Deficient knowledge related to lack of

information about UTI, risk factors, and
3 preventive measures as evidenced by
verbalization of inaccurate information or
inability to identify risk factors.
Nursing Interventions
Perform a comprehensive assessment of pain. Determine the location, characteristics, onset,
1 duration, frequency, quality, and severity of pain via assessment.

Assess the voiding pattern (frequency and amount). Compare urine output with fluid

intake. Note specific gravity.

3 Observe for cloudy or bloody urine and foul odor. Dipstick urine as indicated.

4 Encourage the client to drink plenty of water.

5 Monitor BUN, creatinine, and white blood cell (WBC) counts.

6 Identify the learner: the client, family, significant other, or caregiver.
