QUESTION 1

a) Express the angular displacement in terms of its translational physical quantity.


(2 marks)

b) The tires of a bicycle have a diameter of 50.0 cm. As they travel along the road, their wheels
are turning at 1200 revolutions per minute. Calculate the tangential velocity of the edges of
the tires in m s"1.

c) A 0.3 m radius, 30.0 kg solid cylinder pulley rotates at a constant angular velocity of
5.0 rad s"1. Calculate:

i) the moment of inertia and


(2 marks)
ii) the rotational kinetic energy of the solid cylinder pulley.

QUESTION 2

a) Describe the two (2) criteria of static equilibrium for a body.

b) As seen in Figure 1, a 65.0 kg male is in a horizontal, one-hand push-up posture. If point


C is centre of mass of the body,

QUESTION 3

a) Explain the simple harmonic motion (SHM).


(2 marks)

b) Along a frictionless, horizontal surface, an object with a mass of 0.5 kg oscillates with
SHM. Its position varies with time according to the equation x(t)=[10cos(20iTt)] m, where
x is in meter and t is in seconds. Calculate:

i) the frequency of the object.

ii) the position of the object at t = 2.0 s.
(2 marks)
iii) the spring constant.
(2 marks)

QUESTION 4

a) Describe the atmospheric pressure near the earth.


(2 marks)

b) A 4.0 mm diameter iron ball falls vertically into a bucket of water. If the densities of iron
and water are 7874 kg nr3 and 1000 kg nr3 respectively, calculate:

i) the weight of the iron ball.

ii) the buoyant force acting on the iron ball.
(2 marks)

c) Describe the Bernoulli principle.


(2 marks)

d) A water of density 1.00 g cm-3 flows through two pieces of horizontal tube that are linked
end to end. Within the first segment, the pressure is 1.20 x 105 Pa, the flow speed is 275.0
cm S"\ and the cross-sectional area is 10.0 cm2. Given the cross-sectional area of the
second segment is 2.50 cm2, calculate for the second segment:

i) its flow speed.

QUESTION 5

a) Identify two (2) characteristics of materials that might be used to build a thermometer.
(2 marks)

b) The final temperature is determined to be 38 °C when a 500.0 g piece of metal at 180 °C


is immersed in a 125.0 g aluminum calorimeter cup contains 250.0 g of water at 10 °C.
Given that aluminum and water have specific heat capacities of 900 J kg"1 °C"1 and
4200 J kg-1 °C"1 respectively, calculate the specific heat of the metal.

c) A tungsten sphere of radius 50.0 cm has a surface temperature of 27.0 °C.

i) Calculate the power radiated by the sphere. Given its emissivity, e = 0.35 and Stefan-
Boltzmann constant a = 5.6704* 10-8 W m"2 K"4.

ii)lf the sphere is enclosed in a room with walls kept at -5.0 °C, calculate the net flow rate
of the energy out of the sphere. Given Stefan-Boltzmann constant o =

QUESTION 6

a) Express the root mean square speed equation of a gas molecule.

b) Molecules of gas move with different speeds.

i) Given five molecules of speeds of 12, 16, 32, 40 and 48 m s"1. Calculate the average
speed for these molecules.

ii) If hydrogen has a mass of 3.3x10" kg at 100.0 °C, calculate the root mean square
speed of the hydrogen gas molecule. Given the Boltzmann constant, k = 1.38x10"23 m2
kgs" 2 K" 1 .

c) At room temperature (27 °C), oxygen molecules filled in a vessel with a capacity of 1.6 m3
and a pressure of 200 kPa. Assuming the gas behaves as an ideal gas, calculate the
number of moles of oxygen molecules in the vessel if R = 8.31 J mol"1 K"1.

QUESTION 7

a) Explain the isobaric and isochoric processes.


(2 marks)

b) An ideal gas goes through an isobaric process as shown in Figure 2. The volume increases
from Vi = 2.0 L to V2 = 12.0 L with constant pressure of 3.0 atm. Given that 1 atm =
1.01x105 Pa, calculate:

iii) If in each cycle, an engine absorbs 45.0 kcal of heat and emits 20.0 kcal of heat,
