1.Orientation:
Once upon a time, there was a fisherman named Batara
Guru Sahala who lived in Batak land. One day, he caught
a fish that could talk. The fish begged Sahala to set it free
and he did accordingly.
Complication:
As soon as the fish was free, it changed into a woman. She
was so beautiful that Sahala fell in love with her at once.
He asked her to marry him. The woman agreed to marry
Sahala, but in one condition: he had to keep the secret that
she was once a fish. Sahala promised her that he would not
tell anyone about it.
They were happily married and had two daughters. Every
morning Sahala went out fishing. His daughters would
bring him his lunch. One day, however, instead of bringing
the food to their father, the two girls ate it.
When Sahala knew what they had done with the meal, he
got very angry. He shouted at them saying, “You behaved
exactly like the daughters of a fish.”
The girls did not understand what their father meant.
They went home and asked their mother about it. Their
mother was very annoyed. Although Sahala apologized to
her later, she would not forgive him for breaking his
promise.
Resolution:
From that moment on, Sahala took a lesson that he should
not have broken his own promise. Sahala was so grief-
striker that he decided to wander for the rest of his life.
2.A Miser
Orientation:
One day there was a miser who sold all that he had to buy
a lump of gold. After buying the gold, he buried it in a hole
in the ground by the side of an old wall and went to look at
daily. One of his workmen realized his frequent visits to
the spot and decided to watch his movements secretly.
Complication:
He soon discovered the secret of the hidden treasure and
stole it. The next day the miser found the hole empty and
began to tear his hair and to make loud lamentations. A
neighbor, seeing him overcome with grief and learning the
cause, said, “Pray do not grieve so.”
“Then take a stone, and place it in the hole, and fancy that
the gold is still lying there. It will do you quite the same
service; because when you placed the gold there, you had
it not, as you did not make the slightest use of it.”
Re-orientation:
Moral of the story: The worth of material wealth comes
from what you do with it. If you do nothing with it, it
doesn’t mean anything.
Complication:
Then the farmer dropped a coin into the box. At once, the
apples disappeared and the box began to fill itself with
coins. Every day the farmer and his wife collected
hundreds and hundreds of coins from the box. Soon, they
became very rich.
Now, the farmer’s grandfather lived with the couple. He
has not very strong and he could not go out to work. So,
the farmer asked the old man to help him take the money
out of the box. When his grandfather became tired and
wanted to rest, the farmer shouted at him, “Why are you
lazy? Why can’t you work harder?”
The old man did not say anything, but he continued
working until he fell inside the box and died. At once, the
money disappeared and the box began to fill up with dead
grandfathers.
Resolution:
The farmer had to pull them out and bury them. To do
this, he had to spend all the money he had collected. When
he had used up all the money, the box broke and the
farmer was just as poor as he was before.
4.Orientation:
One day, the little boy was very hungry. He was happy to
see a jar of nuts on the table. Because nuts were one of his
favorite things to see.
Complication:
“Ah, I’d like some of these nuts. I’m sure mother would
give them to me. But I can’t ask her. Because she isn’t here
yet. I’ll just take a big handful. I’m sure it’s okay” said the
little boy.
Then the little boy put his hand in the jar and grabbed a
big, big handful.
However, when he tried to pull his hand out, he couldn’t.
The neck of the jar was too small. His hand was stuck.
He tried and tried, again. And again. But he couldn’t take
the whole handful out. Soon, he started to cried.
His mother walked into the room and asked. “What’s the
matter? Why are you crying?” then she looked little boy’s
hand and asked, “What are you doing?”
“I can’t take this handful of nuts out of the jar,” cried the
little boy.
“Well, don’t be so greedy,” his mother answered. “Just
take two or three nuts. Then you can take your hand out
easily.”
Resolution:
He tries her advice ... and of course, it worked!
Complication:
Fascinated by her beauty, the young man asked her to be
his wife. The application was accepted on condition that
the young man was not allowed to tell the origin of the
princess who came originally from fish.
The young man agreed to this requirement. Having got
married for a year, the couple got a boy but he had a bad
habit that he never felt satisfied while he was eating. He
ate all the food.
One day the boy ate all the food that should be given to his
father. The young man then so angrily said: “basically you
are the offspring of fish!” That statement by itself
unlocked the secrets of his wife and broke his promise.
Shortly afterwards, his wife and son magically
disappeared. Suddenly in the land of their former
footsteps went out the springs which were very heavy. The
water flew from these springs continuously and the longer
it happened the larger it would be.
Resolution:
Finally, these springs became a vast lake. The lake is now
called Toba Lake
Complication:
“Why, I know at least a hundred tricks to get away from
our mutual enemies, the dogs,” she said.
“I know only one trick to get away from dogs,” said the
cat. “You should teach me some of yours!”
“Well, maybe someday, when I have the time, I may teach
you a few of the simpler ones”, replied the fox airily.
Just then they heard the barking of a pack of dogs in the
distance. The barking grew louder and louder-the dogs
were coming in their direction! At once the cat ran to the
nearest tree and climbed into its branches, well out of
reach of any dog. “This is the trick I told you about, the
only one I know”, said the cat. “Which one of your
hundred tricks are you going to use?”
Resolution:
The fox sat silently under the tree, wondering which trick
she should use. Before she could make up her mind, the
dogs arrived. They fell upon the fox and tore her to pieces.
Re-orientation:
Moral of the story: A single plan that works is better than
a hundred doubtful plans.
Complication:
But one day, the wife and son of the farmer got sick. Then
the wife wore her wings and then flew with the son next to
her, leaving the farmer alone and heartbroken.
The gods didn’t want to see him sad and heart broken.
They help the farmer by building a gorgeous, colorful
bridge.
Resolution:
The farmer can climb the sky and then see his wife and
son again.
Complication:
One day a tiger saw the farmer and his buffalo working.
The tiger was surprised to see a big animal listening to a
small animal. He wanted to know more about the buffalo
and the man.
After the man went home, the tiger spoke to the buffalo.
“You are so big and strong, why do you do everything the
man tells you?”
“Oh, the man is very intelligent.”
So the next day the tiger said to the man, “Can I see your
intelligence?”
But the man answered, “It’s at home.”
“Can you go and get it?” asked the tiger.
“Yes,” said the man, “But I’m afraid you will kill my
buffalo when I am gone.”
Resolution:
He took his plow and hit the tiger with a stick. Then he
said, “Now you know about my intelligence even if you
haven’t seen it.”
Complication:
Once Sura and Baya were looking for some food.
Suddenly, Baya saw a goat “Yummy, this is my lunch,”
said Baya. “No way! This is my lunch. You are greedy”
said Sura. Then they fought for the goat. After several
hours, they were very tired.
Feeling tired of fighting, they lived in different places.
Sura lived in the water and Baya lived in the land. The
border was the beach, so they would never fight again.
One day, Sura went to the land and looked for some food
in the river. He was very hungry and there was not much
food in the sea. Baya was very angry when he knew that
Sura broke the promise. They fought again.
Resolution:
They both hit each other. Sura bit Baya’s tail. Baya did the
same thing to Sura. He bit very hard until Sura finally
gave up and went back to the sea. Baya was happy.
Complication:
She could have sunk if a dove up a nearby tree had not
seen her. Seeing that the ant was in trouble, the dove
quickly put off a leaf from a tree and dropped it
immediately into the water near the struggling ant. Then
the ant moved towards the leaf and climbed up there. Soon
it carried her safely to dry ground.
Not long after that, there was a hunter nearby who was
throwing out his net towards the dove, hoping to trap it in
this way.
Resolution:
Guessing what he should do, the ant quickly bit him on the
heel. Feeling the pain, the hunter dropped his net and the
dove flew away quickly from this net.
Re-orientation:
Moral of the story: One good turn deserves another.
