Understanding Culture Society and Politics

Discuss the nature, goals, and perspective of Anthropology and Political Science

Anthropology

Anthropology is the study of humankind, encompassing biological, cultural, and social

aspects to understand human origins, evolution, and diversity. Its goals include
describing human cultures, explaining behavior, and applying knowledge to address
real-world issues. Anthropology's perspective emphasizes holism, cultural relativism,
and fieldwork. It finds applications in cultural resource management, public health,
education, business, conflict resolution, development, and environmental sustainability.
The field promotes cross-cultural understanding, informs policy and practice, and
enhances human well-being. Originating in the 19th century, anthropology is a global
discipline that emerged from Enlightenment questioning of traditional beliefs and
exploration of diverse cultures.

Political Science

Political science studies government, politics, and power, seeking to understand how
societies are governed and how decisions are made. It relies on empirical evidence,
develops theories, and explores ethical questions. Its goals include understanding
political systems, explaining behavior, and informing policy solutions. Key perspectives
focus on power, the state, and citizenship.

Political science finds applications in government, international organizations, non-

profits, academia, and media. It's important for informed citizenship, effective
governance, and global cooperation. Its roots trace back to ancient Greece and the
Enlightenment, solidifying as a distinct academic discipline in the 19th century.
